Schmidt told CNN Palin's claims in her book are 'total fiction'.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - John McCain's former presidential campaign manager Steve Schmidt is the latest McCain adviser to cry foul over accusations Sarah Palin has penned in her yet to be released memoir "Going Rogue."

Excerpts obtained by The Huffington Post characterize Schmidt in an unfavorable light, particularly in reference to the prank phone call Palin received from someone pretending to be French President Nicolas Sarkozy. "Right away, the phones started ringing," Palin writes. "One of the first calls was Schmidt, and the force of his screaming blew my hair back. 'How can anyone be so stupid?! Why would the president of France call a vice presidential candidate a few days out?!'"

In a telephone conversation with CNN's John King, Schmidt said how he is described and portrayed in the book is "fanciful. [And] total fiction."

In the excerpts, Palin also claims Schmidt tried to put her on a strict eating regimen, and in a conversation with Randy Scheunemann, a McCain foreign policy adviser, he had blamed the campaigns problems on Palin's "postpartum depression."

"Schmidt started in again, telling Randy what an awful pick I was - the "postpartum" problems, the wardrobe "scandal," "legal exposure" for Todd on Troopergate, whatever he meant by that," Palin writes according to the published excerpts.

In October, during The Atlantic magazine's First Draft of History Conference, Schmidt predicted to CNN's John King that he would be portrayed as "anti-rogue in the running of the campaign."

Oh my! How can anyone believe anything sara the ice princess says? It is apparant that everyone is out to make her look bad. The poor misunderstood little 'ole gal from Alaska. Governing a state that has a populace smaller than the county I live in makes her more than qualified to govern our great nation.

Wanda   November 14th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

I don't care how much money she makes as long as She doesn't step a foot in the white house.

stacy   November 14th, 2009 9:38 pm ET

The hypocrisy of the liberal left and the liberal left media is just unfreakinreal!!! During the campaign the seriously biased media flocked to Alaska and searched under each and every rock hoping for some dirt on Palin, who was a VICE Presidential candidate! But, shamefully, they failed to even do a minimum of vetting on Obama, who was a Presidential candidate! Palin is an intelligent, beautiful, conservative wife and mother of five. Her and her family are an all American, bible-clinging, gun-toting, Constitutional loving, fiscal conservative, Country-honoring, middle American family and are an asset to this Great Country. As Governor, she began by rooting out the corruption in her own party, before moving on to the corruption in the opposing party. From the moment she stepped on the national stage, the media began their savage and unprecedented attack on her, her husband and her children and through it all she showed an amazing grace and determination. After the campaign, left wing liberals began to attack her in the courts, filing 15-20 bogus lawsuits that, one after another were dismissed, none "stuck".

On the other hand the media ignored, or never bothered to look at Obama and his past or present. Had they taken a few minutes and done a google search they would have easily seen him for what he is. He is an American hating, marxist loving, social justice, redistribute the wealth, corrupt Chicago machine politician who has spent 1.7 million dollars in lawyer fees to keep from having to produce ANY of his personal records. He has in his administration more than 30 unelected. unconfirmed czars that We the People pay and yet they answer to him and him alone, not us. He gave to his union buddies the car companies, bypassing bankruptcy laws that have been in place from the start and at We the Peoples expense! He has labeled half of the people in this country as terrorists while bringing actual terrorists to this country, giving them full rights and a show trial that will cost We the People millions of dollars and decrease our national safety.

I could go on and on and on, listing dozens and dozens things this man and his administration, czars, fellow democrats, union buddies and ACORN cronies have done to We the People and this great Country, things that done by any conservative or republican would have landed them in jail, but it is pointless to try talking about the truth to a liberal, as there is only their way and no other. Most liberals won't even try telling you that what you are saying is not true, but will immediately resort to name calling and personal attacks. so please continue your frenzied attack on Palin and other conservatives and ignore the destruction of this great Country by our Marxist-in-Chief.

The only thing I ask is that you keep your crying and whining to yourself when you wake up and find that YOUR Freedom and Liberty are gone, the same as mine.

Marie Laveaux   November 14th, 2009 8:41 pm ET

My god, that woman is so pathetic. No one in Mc Cain's campaign staff had to do a thing to make her look bad. All she had to do was open her mouth and utter her inane falsehoods to expose herself. to get back to the "pig" analogy, remember that you can't turn a pig's snout into a silk purse. She's a liar and a quitter.

Lee Bartholomew   November 14th, 2009 8:36 pm ET

So can someone at the bookstore make the proper thing and put it in the fiction area. Do we even know she wrote the book?? At least she's not the dumbest person on the earth. Both Carrie Prejean and Glenn Beck take those honors. Unfortunately she is no leader. She just does whatever someone else tells her to do.

Cynthia   November 14th, 2009 8:24 pm ET

Of course those in the McCain camp aren't going to own up to THEIR mistakes, because afterall they need to get jobs and don't need anything that could show that they were at fault. It is much easier to put the blame somewhere else. They want to stake claim that they ran a good campaign so they can screw someone else's campaign later.

ynot4tony2   November 14th, 2009 8:23 pm ET

Oh my God! The comments on a CNN news story are still open! Now that Hot Air has linked to it, the influx of conservative posters will cause CNN to quickly close down the comments so they remain dominated by Sarah hating neo-comm liberals.

Democrats fear Palin, plain and simple. Otherwise, they wouldn't viciously attack her like they do.

Look at Joe Biden. Conservatives don't throw vitriol at him constantly like the left does Palin. Why is that? Because it's obvious to all that Joe Biden is a complete moron. We don't need to point that out. However, neo-comm liberals feel the need to desperately try to convince everyone Sarah Palin is dumb and harmful to our country.

You neo-comm liberals haven't even convinced yourselves, let alone anyone else. You fear Palin, just like you do Beck and Limbaugh.

If Sarah Palin was older and overweight, she would have never been chosen, and would still be sitting in Alaska, with no book, no Oprah interview, a grandchild, and perhaps a son in law named Levi.

If John McCain wanted a woman for VP, there were many smart women he could have chosen that are Republicans. The GOP too a calculated risk on her and lost.

She is a joke.

Love reading the comments of all the terrified liberals here. The fact is we'd be in much better shape right now if Palin was President ( forget Mccain) instead of the Chicago Phony. No wasted stimulus bill, no cap and trade, no healthcare reform, our free-market economy would be REALLY emerging from the recession, private sector jobs would be coming back, deficit would be about a trillion less, and no bowing to foreign leaders. 2012 can't get here soon enough.

Doc in Virginia   November 14th, 2009 7:54 pm ET

Wow! There are some seriously deranged people blogging in here.
Do you right wing knuckleheads truly think she is some puritan advocate of your party & values? She's a liar, period. Takes blame for nothing, period. Has no idea of what a true work ethic is, period. Is a hateful inciter of peoples' most base bigotry and ugly natures, period.
Will probably make a few million dollars, yes for sure, but will have no credibility ever and will never face any tough questioning or face to face conflict with those who seek to ask her hard yet fair questions. If she were a man I would call her a punk. I have no clue what title she should have as a woman. The B-word is too lenient.

Patty   November 14th, 2009 7:51 pm ET

I find these comments by you Palin haters amazing. Not one thing anyone of you have said on here is based on "fact." If you would put your high and mighty know it all energy into something more important you might learn a few things. Try reading real facts, not just what you read on these blogs. Try for once to put your hatred aside and learn. And oh by the way, why do you waste your time even commenting if you hate her so much. You really must have more important things to do.

pat   November 14th, 2009 7:51 pm ET

This guy has no credibility whatsoever. A complete dolt that has spent the last year attempting to blame everyone but himself for one of the worst run campaigns in modern times. And because of him we are burdened with a President who is an ignorant narcissist.

Joe   November 14th, 2009 7:02 pm ET

There are things of certainty in this world. Taxes, Death, and taking sides based exclusively on political ideology.

We can't know for sure on this story unless we have substance of the claims. Records, recordings, ect. We do, however, have claims that are neither incomprehensible nor surprising of a campaign boss. The inner workings of campaigns are notorious for these sort of figures. Perhaps Schmidt is being honest. Schmidt, however, is in a position where he has to defend himself. Schmidt has much more to lose.

Even now, I see the leftist in this comment section are simultaneously calling Palin a liar, while running with some of the statements she accused Schmidt of making. Not surprising, but funny nonetheless.

And I am assuming no one here was bothered by the lies told about her or the fake quotes attributed to her. They even got into the hands of the great liberal intellectual Matt Damon. :) Did anyone concern themselves with those lies? Hmmm...

Sue   November 14th, 2009 7:00 pm ET

Yes , how can anyone be so stupid as to pick Palin to begin with, then keep her on the ticket when it was clear the nation would be in jeopardy should she ever actually take power?

The entire party is stupid other than it's ability to inspire fear in a minority far right fringe. There is no reason for the Republican Party to exist, and Palin graces the front prow of the great ship GOP as it crashes into the rocks. Glub, glub and good riddance.

The liberals get frantic every time Sarah shows up. I have to ask myself, why? If she is so worthless, so stupid, so uneducated, so....
then why do the liberals, whether Dem or Rep, go nuts? If she is so worthless why would they waste so much print, internet and TV time putting her down.

Of course Sarah Palin will make tons of money, of course her book will sell more than anybody else's books and it is because of its content: It is the best comedy ever written. People will buy it for its comedic relief and for being an easy reading book. Easier to read these kind of books to entertain ourselves than books on scientific research for example. As somebody else mentioned it before, her book should've been titled "Going Rouge" not "Going Rogue", maybe Sarah just misspelled the title, oh well, even the best spellers make spelling mistakes.

Can Sarah Palin take responsibility for anything??? The only thing she's rogue with are the facts. And with only about 20% of the electorate claiming to be Republicans, that really leaves Sarah Palin and her fans out in the cold.

Heck, I'll even endorse her to run!

Dan, TX   November 14th, 2009 6:17 pm ET

CNN, you will publish anything to bring down Sarah Palin. This guy Schmidt knows nothing. He has run a failed campaign for John McCain. He has no credibility. Why should you mention Huffington Post. Huffington is a discarded person in California. She wants to make money by posting liberal comments and news on their website. It is not a major media outlet.
I jhave great respect for Sarah Palin and we need such a leader for our nation. Current president Barack Obama has no idea and no experience. Sarah Palin can do the job better than Barack.

Steve in Kentucky   November 14th, 2009 6:16 pm ET

I don't know. But maybe Schmidt should have asked that of himself. He was part of the team who picked her to be a heartbeat away from the presidency after all.

It's pretty hard to be any more stupid than Sara Palin and not be classified as mentally retarded.

usualone   November 14th, 2009 6:14 pm ET

Is Sarah Palin ever going to take responsibility for her own actions. (Notice I don't put a question mark around this as she certainly won't.) She will trash everyone instead of facing the fact, that she is her own worst enemy. This man didn't have to think hard to know that she would attack him in her book. The "right" are so happy they think the liberals are squirming. In truth, she will help keep the "liberals" in power. What keeps the left commenting on her, is that the "left" contrary to words spouted by the "right" do love America...and they find her an embarrassment if she were handed a future in the American political scene. I should be embarrassed if I were those who support this lying, cheating person. It makes me wonder if those who support her have the same values?

And now she will get rich on her book, which is best used for a lack of TP. Get real people, we have so many problems going on in this country, and we "feast" on the ravings of an idiot.

For those of us close to the campaign, we started to distrust ol' Stevie-boy back in May 2008... his closest buddies rode with me in campaign motorcades and let me tell you... they were as sleazy as they come... filled with hate and vile as they talked on their cell phones... the next times they came to town, i declined to be involved... then the team McCain sent to us was filled with robotic amateurs who didn't know how to lick stamps and were clueless and pleading for help on how to build a coalition... ol' Stevie has seen his days and we in the Party hope we never see or hear from him again...

Sarah Palin's credibility is shot full of holes and is in the gutter. Her book will not revive any chance of her political comback. Firstly, the book seems to be a written version of Palin's whining, complaining and blaming others for her mistakes. Secondly, Palin is appealing to a small segment of the American public– extreme right wing social conservatives. The majority of the American public have already dismissed her as unqualified for the U.S. Presidency. Thirdly, Palin has demostrated that she is unfit for the job of U.S. President and its riggers. She cannot even withstand an ethics inquiry into her public conduct. How is she going to withstand those and other challanges if she were to be president? Most of the time, you don't get a second chance to make a first impression and Sarah Palin is no exception to this rule.

And by the way, I wish Obama's books were "fact checked" as well – we may even find out what he's hiding in his birth records, sealed away all these years in a vault in Hawaii . . . or in his college records . . .

Shawn S   November 14th, 2009 5:58 pm ET

Ahh, liberal claims that Palin is too stupid, not qualified, not a danger the the rancid liberal agenda, Yet, the seek out every article about her and repeat the same lies about the airplane, the bridge to nowhere, the 15 liberal ethics complaints that were ALL dismissed including trooper"gate'.
If she really was the downfall to conservatism and the GOP, they would be building her up to be nominatied, not calling her crass vile names.
The strange thing is that the most vocal hatred is coming from the gay community, even though Obama is to the right of her on that issue.
Obama is against gay marriage because of his RELIGIOUS beliefs. Religious beliefs are not bound to change. Palin and McCains postion is against for cultural reason, (that's the way they were raised)
Culture standpoints do in fact change with the people.
This make the gay community living in the dark even after Obama refused to support them in Maine in the recent vote.

No matter who she is or what party she belongs to, she has the right to free speech and to sell a book. If you don't like her, you are not forced to read it, unlike the health care reform that is forced down the throats of many. There should not be a double standard on freedom of speech, so get off your hate-mongering you Dems, and get a life.

Joe Thompson   November 14th, 2009 5:57 pm ET

Can't wait for the day I can buy her book – I'm going to buy 100 copies and hand them out at the corner of 42nd and 5th Avenue in NYC. Sarah stands for: 1) the constitution; 2) drill for energy independence; and 3) financial responsibility. What's not to like? (And note – every Democrat virtually to a person stands in direct opposition to these three common sense, and simple, principles.) Can't wait for 2010, and then 2012? . . . nah, Sarah's too good to waste her talents in the cesspool of presidential politics. She can accomplish WAY more by doing what she's doing right now. I remember a time when liberals were afraid to even spout their rubbish (this would've been in the mid-80's) – can't wait for this time to come again in 2010.

Palin is playing the media like a fiddle since she's left office.
First she got people to read the entire healthcare bill proposed by congress, by putting into quotes so people couldn't miss it, the words death panels...orginally in her Facebook notes as" death panel" so the liberal media could spread it around for her.
Now she releases bits and pieces of her book, and holds back the proof that's in the form of emails from the campaign, to allow the naysayers to dig a hole for themeselves before she proves them to be liars, exposing that fact to the public.
She is not just releasing a book, her plan is to expose her irrational criics lies and sour their future non-sense to the public forever.

A person doesn't need to be deranged to "hate" Sarah Palin. To respect, admire, emulate, "understand" her, on the other hand, a certain mental deficiency might be in order.

Sarah Palin has shown (CERTIFIED) herself to be unprepared, inarticulate, untruthful, vindictive, and a quitter...

But I DO have to admit, that because of moral/mental giants like you, she will be rich...
But I guess, to the "Right" wing(nut) fringe, that's all that really matters.

Katie   November 14th, 2009 5:47 pm ET

OMG – a politician who LIES!!! Who would have thought it possible? Of course she lies. Honestly, who is surprised that the book is just one big "take that!" to everyone who wronged her? Look at her history – she's always been a vindictive woman. Her first act as mayor of a town of 9,000 people was to fire everyone who didn't like her!! Didn't matter who they were, what their experience was, or how well they'd always done their jobs – they crossed her, they're out of there. She doesn't have the power to fire anyone anymore, so writing a book and naming names and making a ton of money doing it is the next best thing. Doesn't matter that she lies in print (freedom of speech, ya know?) what matters is that she can make a lot of money and her adoring fans will still love her. (Love is blind, you betcha.)

@Darrell,

"...The very idea that this will become a best seller tells a very sad story of how some can be duped by this cult like leader."

Not necessarily. A book can become a best seller if some organization just buys up thousands and thousands of copies. People don't actually have to buy the book to make it a best seller. The RNC can do that by themselves if they like... or some pro-Palin group... assuming that there can be a pro-Palin group that is.

Why is it that when someone is scared by the liberal left, they go to the bottom of the barrel to find the minions to smear individuals like Sarah? I will be the first to admit that McCain was far from my choice for the Republicans. He's not much different from Obama. And when the New York Times endorsed him? Well, that just meant they say him as a pushover, and not much competition for The One.

I won't be buying EX-governor Palin's memoir on "victimhood." However, I have purchased the well-written account of the campaign titled "Sarah From Alaska", co-authored by Scott Conroy and Shushanna Walshe.

I highly recommend it if you want to get an inside view from two embedded reporters, one from CBS and the other from Fox News.

The authors do their best to be fair to Palin while at the same time showing what they call her "infallibility syndrome" when Palin shows tendencies "to refuse to acknowledgte any error in judgment and to offer instead a version of events that could easily be proved false."

They should have put Palin on a strict speaking regimen. Every time she opened her yap she underscored the HORRIBLE judgment McCain used in choosing her as his running mate. Can you believe the senile old fool actually picked her to run the country when his used up old carcass finally gave up the ghost? It's still astounding.

wbn   November 14th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

I wouldn't trust a McCain campaign aide one iota. McCain's team of advisors led him left of center on too many issues and kept him from trumpeting some of his actual conservative positions to try and be "respectable" in the eyes of the arrogant left, both media and politicians. No wonder they hated (and still hate) Palin, a forthright conservative.

Charles A. Bishop   November 14th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Without having read the book it is unfair to pass judgment. However, I'm inclined to believe her Republican critics who were close to her during the run up to the election. It's doubtful that Palin actually wrote the book herself so it is possible that her ghost writer(s) interjected materials to make Sarah look better. But if this happened, she should have made corrections before the book was printed. Alas, we may never be able to distinguish fact from fiction. The controversy is more bad news for the Republicans, and just at a time when they were beginning to improve their ratings.

A lot of candidates have written books, but Sarah is not allowed. Was Pres Obama's book fact Checked? Sarah is not being vindictive, the media are. The immeadiate attacks on this book before it is even out proves what Sarah has been saying all along. She is part of the biggest scam ever in America, and how she maintains her fifteen minutes of fame, this should shame all that follow her. She is well known for blaming everything that go's wrong on everyone but herself. I can only dream that people should stand up for the truth and not purchase a book by a proven liar.By the way what pretal has she ever done that could be considerd "Going Rouge" ?
Does that mean you leave Wasilla in debt ? Does that mean you had to have guidance and a forced administrator such as she did as Mayor ? Or does it mean you quit your commitment to the state you love by quitting to concentrate on your future earning potential ? Maybe it means you go to several community colleges for seven years to get your degree. I would never let my children believe this is a good person or a role model and buying her book to me means I am a sucker for all her lies and I won't go that low.

And so now Sarah Palin's pathological lying is in print... All for a price, of course.

The women is a total work of fiction!!! I'm scared to death of her and her mindless ideas!!! She has NO IDEA of reality in the lower 48. She lives in Alaska which is totally a Socialistic State! She get paid $1500 per person in her family every year and she has 100% health care through the Eskimo program!!! How can the women even relate to what we go through in the lower 48!!!!

To me, it sounds like if he "predicted" what would come out in the book, it must be true. How else could he know what would be said of him in the unpublished, unread book if it didn't happen?

Sarah Palin is the gift >wink< that just keeps giving! ..for Democrats.

Mona   November 14th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

Just goes to show ya what a LIAR she is! Now her own party
is coming out against her....as I previously said, "go home
and take care of your children"!

StevieB   November 14th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

At this point, Palin talking is only news on the exceptionally rare instances whewre she tells even a partial truth.

Linda   November 14th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

Oh yes, sure. Just like the clothes thing that you all spent and then leaked stories as if it was her.

And....the skies open....Angels are playing....oh wait, wrong campaign.
