WASHINGTON (CNN) – Days after telling his former staffers to avoid responding to charges in Sarah Palin's new book, Sen. John McCain has spoken up to deny that his campaign made her pay for her own vice presidential vetting. The former Republican presidential candidate told The Hill on Monday night that Palin did receive a legal bill - but it was to deal with allegations that she abused her power as governor to try to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from his job as a state trooper in Alaska. "That was over the troopergate," McCain told The Hill. In her book "Going Rogue: An American Life," Palin said that the McCain campaign stuck her with a bill for $50,000 to cover the costs of her own vetting. McCain's aides have denied this charge, and others made in the book, but the Arizona senator has largely remained silent. On Friday, he asked his former aides to avoid television appearances and refrain from engaging in a back-and-forth with Palin over the claims. Palin has given him a signed copy of the book. McCain told the Hill that he enjoyed reading it. "I hope she sells lots of them," he said.

But, instead of picking the best qualified nominee, you catered to that really small but nasty, right-wing, snobbish group that is looking for a special place in heaven when they die and thus votes on only one issue – abortion. So convenient to string that crowed along, as they are a sure 5% of the voters, but for you to pick a person as stupid as that particular voting block is loud was just simply the mistake of your life – so sad.

Palin couldn't possibly have been charged anything for her vetting process...it never happened! Had she been vetted McCain would have never have chosen her as his running mate. I'm very afraid of the 39% or so of Americans who believe she is qualified for president.

Easy to solve. Palin lets see a list of your legal bills. How much of it"s for your lawyer finding someone to publish your book. How much is for troopergate (which by the way would have been paid for by the State, except YOU OPTED to use a private attorney). Show the bills, Problem SOLVED.

Troopergate showed no wrong doing by Palin but McCain should of still helped pay for it as nominating her exasperated the issue.

I am an Independent and here is my confusion. McCain clearly brands the Palin declaration that she was sent a bill to pay for her own vetting (which is highly questionable and who would agree to this as a nominee). as absurd!
From another CNN report on Palin which is totally contradicted by the assertions made in the McCain rebuttal, how can the American electorate draw the following conclusions?
