Reporters, former aide dispute claim about Palin daughter

Palin's daughter Piper, pictured above to Palin's right, traveled with the former Alaska governor throughout the 2008 campaign.

Palin's daughter Piper, pictured above to Palin's right, traveled with the former Alaska governor throughout the 2008 campaign.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - In her new memoir, "Going Rogue," Palin accuses two national reporters of trying to corner her young daughter Piper on the street in Juneau for an interview several months after the presidential campaign ended - a charge both the journalists and a former Palin campaign aide reject.

Palin writes in her book that after the race ended, "members of the national press continued to hang out in Alaska sniffing for tabloid stuff."

"In one early press conference we noticed that our local reporters were flanked by a couple of reporters from the Lower 48 who'd been hanging out around Juneau in search of material for their own Sarah Palin book," Palin writes. "We never shut our doors to anyone, so people of all kinds attended these press availabilities. But glancing along the side wall, I recognized these particular folks as the same ones who had cornered Piper on her walk home from Harborview Elementary School and talked to her for who knows how long about who knows what."

According to Palin, Piper returned home and told her mother: "Mom, remember those reporters who came on the campaign plane with us? You know, the ones Nicolle [Wallace] said didn't like us very much? They just interviewed me on the sidewalk." Palin adds after the incident, Piper was no longer allowed to walk to or from school by herself.

The journalists in question - Scott Conroy and Shushannah Walshe, authors of the newly-published book "Sarah from Alaska" - deny Palin's characterization. Both traveled with Palin on her campaign plane throughout her 2008 vice presidential bid, and the precocious Palin daughter frequently visited with the press corps and became friendly with them, a fact Palin boasts about in her memoir.

Conroy and Walshe said in a statement Tuesday that in the course of reporting for their book, they conducted 190 interviews, including sit-downs with Palin's parents and her husband Todd.

"We did not, however, interview Piper Palin, nor did we corner her on her way home from school," Conroy and Walshe told CNN in a statement. "Contrary to Governor Palin's recollection of having seen us both at a press conference, Scott has never attended a press conference in Alaska."

Wallace, who advised Palin on media strategy during the campaign but fell out favor with the candidate, also rejected Palin's version of the story. She said it would have been impossible for Piper to have used her by name in a discussion about the campaign reporters in question, because Wallace never spoke to Piper about them.

"I have never met Shushannah and Scott and had never seen Shushannah until I saw her on TV yesterday," Wallace said in an e-mail to CNN. "Couldn't have picked either of them out of a line up and never heard their names or had any idea who they were until after the campaign ended."

Conroy and Walshe tell their version of the story in their book, which was released earlier this month. On happening to bump into the reporters in Juneau, they write, Piper "seemed excited to chat briefly with us about her return to Alaska." An hour later, they received an angry phone call from Palin's deputy press secretary, Sharon Leighow, accusing them of "cornering Piper at her bus stop for comment."

"We don't appreciate you being here, and we don't appreciate you stalking the governor as you have been," Leighow said, according to the authors.

Sarah Palin would lie to Jesus if it made her look good. I've never seen someone disparage (the media) so much and so greatly the very same people she literally uses to promote her own fictitious and wholly misinformed agenda. What is her agenda? She is her agenda. She represents nothing about this country that is positive. She espouses thoughtlessness and nothing else.

why i am not surprised at the palin is perfectly feasible to think piper would know who they were, and i doubt they cornered her...also, for piper to use the terms she used, like saying nicole (wallace) was the one who said they did not like us very, that is something that was said in the house...i am sure sarah told everyone in the household that anyone who did not agree with her was not to be liked...that would include everyone from the national media...i just wish she would quit whining at every turn..if she is going to be in the national media spotlight (for instance going on all the shows to promote her book) then quit slamming the media at every turn...please sarah, stop it..i think you are better than!!!!!!...oh! p.s...i noticed you used the word dithering on the barbara walters interview....again, quit getting your talking points from dick cheney...thanks, tricia pierce

Why is CNN so Palin obsessed. CNN writes and talks about her as though her words and actions are anything to go by. CNN is making much ado about nothing. Simply forget her.

Palin is a schizoid megalomaniac. Really, those of you suffering from depression because your Party lost need to stop lying to yourselves about ANYBODY being threatened by Palin. She's a pathological liar. she should really be pitied if she wan't making so much money off of her lies.

I believe Palin..........the press was on a witch hunt. Too bad the same press people didn't do their homework and expose Obama for what he really is. What an injustice, and we are stuck with him for another 3 years.

Is Sara palin always going to play the victim? If she ever did something besides complain maybe you would get more favorable press. Also, if you let your kids cozy up to the reporters you shouldn't be allowed to complain when they report on them. If you don't want your kids to be in the spotlight you shouldn't have carted them around like political props.

She is so blatant with her lies. Why does she lie about the small things?
Her desire to be the victim is so great I guess she can't help herself.
All you whiner about the Palin coverage please soon as you stop responding at least 300 times to Palin posts CNN will most likely still use them.

Somehow I feel like the world is turning upside down. Is there no measure of truth to be had?

To me the worst part of this story is
    1. A 7 year old walking home unaccompanied, especially one as well known as Piper.
    2. Can Palin be held at all accountable for lying?
    3. Why are we reading this junque? We ae all losing it

Isn't she being just a little paranoid about the press? She loves it when she can manipulate it for her own personal gain but once someone can ask her to explain what the heck she is saying it becomes the big, bad liberal monster that has it out for her. If you like to put yourself in the spotlight, don't complain about how bright it is.

So this has gone from the "CNN Political Ticker" to the "CNN Let's See if We Can Dispute Everything in Sarah Palin's Book Ticker?"
And for the previous post, Newsweek is so biased, they remind me of those free alternative papers found in most cities-without the restaurant reviews.

The media has a credibility problem when it comes to Palin as illustrated by Newsweek’s cover photo.

I wouldn't trust a reporter as far as I could through them...especially when it comes to Palin.

Palin may want to run for President in 2012 but she is doing now, all that the Democrats would do to pull her down so as not to let her become the nominee of her party. She is doing the work of the opponents for them.

why give her so much space, she likes any reference to herself and I think that the less said the better. Any remark pleases her and no excuse is ever too insignificant as long as it is about SP
Se;ll the papers and the magazines with material and issues of importance, there are so many, environment, inhumane behavior and the opposite, moral concern.

The Left seems threatened by Sarah Palin, why else do they try so hard to find anything to attack her with? They try to paint her as a dumb woman who doesn't read magazines or newspapers. Really?? She has accomplished alot for being so dumb. Her Couric interview was edited from several interviews she gave which can easily be manipulated to help the liberal media push their political agenda, which at the time was getting Obama elected. No, I'm not a right wing conservative republican, more an moderate Independent. Our liberal media and those from both parties are threatened by someone that connects with the middle class. I think it would be refreshing to have someone who wasn't born with a silver spoon in their mouth or attended Yale or Harvard representing us in DC.

  22. Grrr-awful-o

The most interesting thing about Sarah Palin is how much she brings out the double standard in mainstream media. MSM would never dream of trying to drag a liberal politician's children into the limelight (for instance Joe Biden's daughter a few months ago in her "video debut"... conservatives left her alone too as they should). But if it's a conservative politician the MSM is all over the poor kid. Same happened with the Bush twins when they got their MIPs. And the News Week cover of Palin was "the most interesting picture of her they could find". Isn't Obama's shirtless beach shot picture the most interesting one of him? Can we expect to see that sometime soon? Nope. Liberals are hypocrites if they are anything at all. And this is simply more proof of that. Period!

First of all Nicole Wallace said she never heard of these reporters, I guess she was not that good at her job. If she is the media stratagist you would think she would know any reporters that were on the campaign plane. It seems that the mccain people are getting very defensive about everything. I am not sure why. anyone who followed the election would tell you that mccains campaign was run very badly. I think Palin is just telling some of the reasons why it was so bad.

The media has proof of interviews which we have all previously seen that repute Palin's lies. There is also proof that her husband was a member of the Alaskan Independent Party until 2002 which Palin also denied and wanted covered up. The best is yet to come out on Palin and she is going to run for the hills for good. This woman has disgraced all women who supported her.
