Washington (CNN) - The Pentagon is making detailed plans to send about 34,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan in anticipation of President Obama's decision on the future of the 8-year-old war, a defense official said Tuesday.

Obama held a lengthy meeting with top advisers Monday night and said Tuesday that he would announce plans for Afghanistan after the Thanksgiving holiday.

A Defense Department official with direct knowledge of the process said there has been no final word on the president's decision. But planners have been tasked with preparing to send 34,000 additional American troops into battle with the expectation that is the number Obama is leaning toward approving, the official said.

This is excellent news. Support for the military men and women fighting over there so they can cut their losses, finish the job they were given and come back home for good. Have confidence in the capability of the best military organizations ever put together and watch them do their job well.

I hope that I am wrong but this could be an important turning point for the Obama administration and his great plans to rebuild this country..

Most Americans consider these two wars a huge mistake, started by a moron without a plan for anything.

Republican – Democrat – doesn't matter does it?? When is America going to stop pouring billions of dollars into the miltary-industrial complex and look after its citizens?? Give back the Nobel Peace prize, Mr President – you do not deserve it.

I strongly believe that Obama is under pressure from the Pentagon to send troops to Afghanistan. If that man wanted to send troops to Afghanistan he would have done long time ago.

The RIGHT is still going to have something NEGATIVE to say about this!!! WATCH!!! They most likely will say "WELL, IT'S ABOUT TIME!" or "WHAT TOOK HIM SO LONG?"!!

I wanted the war to END. I still have FAITH in President Obama that he will END this war!! Even though I do not agree with this decision – I will not HATE on our President. He is SMART and he knows what he is doing!!

Better to send whatever hundreds of thousands are needed to crush the Taliban absolutely then get out. When will we learn that piecemeal incremental buildups don't work?

34,000!!! Thats a nice round number. Heck lets not send the additoinal 6,000 troops that Obama's handpicked General said he needed. If this is not the height of arrogance I do not know what is.

OK. Only about 6,000 less than asked for. Took three months for this? Let's hope he never gets that 3 AM call. It may take him a couple of days, oh wait, we will all be gone by then. Now, let's all wait in anticipation of this great new strategy we are going to hear when the great one makes his announcement. I am sure we will hear about the exit strategy. I am sure it will include an exact date for complete withdrawal. Oh wait, he don't do that anymore. After his bold Gitmo disaster and his bold prediction of healthcare reform before the end of the year that will fail, he is getting a little smarter. Come on Mr. President, tell us the truth just once.

the GOP and right wing have been pushing for the president to send more troops over there and he has agreed to do so.....now that means he actually did something that the GOP had wanted so now they have to figure I'm sure how they can oppose it. We all know that they can NOT be in agreement with this president on anything he does so I'm guessing now they will say he's not sending enough troops over there. Have to keep the opposition plan alive, you betcha!
