Pelosi keeps door open on war tax

Speaker Pelosi said Tuesday that 'there is serious unrest' in the House Democratic Caucus over funding the Afghanistan war.
Speaker Pelosi said Tuesday that 'there is serious unrest' in the House Democratic Caucus over funding the Afghanistan war.

Washington (CNN) - Speaker Nancy Pelosi kept the door open Tuesday to a proposal by several senior House Democrats to impose a graduated surtax on American taxpayers to finance the war in Afghanistan.

While Pelosi wasn't pressed about the details of the new war tax, she pointed to strong reservations among Congressional Democrats about the costs of the war during a conference call Tuesday with several economic writers and bloggers.

"But let me say that there is serious unrest in our Caucus about can we afford this war?" Pelosi said.

Two years ago when House Appropriations Chairman David Obey, D-Wisconsin, floated a similar war tax to pay for the war in Iraq, Pelosi quickly rejected it. But on Tuesday Pelosi said the costs of the war and the impact they will have on other domestic priorities should be part of the discussion over U.S. strategy in Afghanistan.

In addition to Obey, several senior Democrats close to Pelosi have signed on as co-sponsors of the "Share the Sacrifice Act." These include Defense Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman John Murtha, D-Pennsylvania, Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel, D-New York, Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank, D-Massachusetts, and the third ranking House Democrat John Larson, D-Connecticut. Obey projects that an escalation of significantly more U.S. troops to Afghanistan will cost about $1 trillion over the next ten years.

`The War Tax should be a 10% surcharge on the upper 1% of tax payers. These rich people and their children do not enlist in the Armed Forces to go and fight for their freedom. Republicans like to say that "Freedom is not free". So if they do not want to go and fight for their freedom, let them pay for it. It's not right that the poor and middle class must must fight and die for these people.

Readjust the tax structure so that it's fair but the middle and lower classes can NOT handle any new taxes during this recession. Better to end the war.

We are already being taxed to pay for this stupid, never-ending war that benefits big oil and firms that specialize in rebuilding stuff we've blown up. I promise you this, if we're levied another tax over and above what we already pay to pay for this silly war, I will dedicate my life to getting Obama out of office.

Here's a great idea for Pelosi, Reid, and Obama: why don't you just take all my money and give me enough every week to feed my family, pay my bills and mortgage. Isn't that what you are trying to do by raising the taxes of hard working American to support massive government spending?

A plan to win, an exit strategy and the resources to pay for it. Sounds like a bunch of adults finally got control of the government. I am sure the GOP Party of No, will twist this into a Democrats taxing as usual, only they started the war and never figured out how we will pay for it.

I only got one thing to say about Nancy Pelosi. Get her out of the White House for good. You want a war Pelosi, pay for it yourself. It doesn't seem that you or the rest of your cronies are listening to the American public on what we want so dig in your own pockets to pay for your ignorant occupation. I did say OCCUPATION!! This is not a war. It is a fight against a belief and a cause. You won't ever stop it because we already bred enough hatred for America to outlast our children, grandchildren, and so on. GET OUR TROOPS HOME.

Well, here we go again!!! Vietnam wasn't enough for all of our War Mongering leaders!!!! We still don't understand that WAR does not accomplish anything except killing people of all countries and bankrupting whole nations!!!!
The type of killing that is occuring now can never be located and stopped in it's entirety!!! We had our own version of that when one of our own, trained to kill and let go ( Tim Mcveigh) did it to women and children in Oklahoma!! WHEN WILL WE LEARN!!!
Osama Bin Laden (with our help) stopped the Russians after ten years of fighting and then we turned on him, also!!!
Russia went BROKE fighting that 10 year war!! Guess how close we are??? This is more than 6 yrs and counting !!! We are in terrible financiial difficulty in our Country RIGHT NOW and guess what we still havn't paid for these WARS yet!!!!
    Welcome to Russia circa 2009!!!

For the party that pledged not to raise taxes if they were elected to the majority, it seems like that promise didn't even last the first year of the Obama presidency.

I'm all for this. I recommend taking it further: ANY time a President sends troops to another country in a military engagement – it must be paid for a-la-carte by an automatic tax kicking in. That tax should be graduated so that the wealthy pay a substantially larger part of the tab.

These are the people (like DICK Cheney) who profit from wars – let them pay for those wars instead.

I never agreed to this war. If I have to pay an explicit tax for it, will I get a chance to vote against it?

I've never avoided taxes, as I believe I should contribute to my country, but I WILL NOT PAY A WAR TAX. They'd be wise to hide this, because for now I can pretend at least that my income taxes don't go entirely to war, but if you call it a war tax, we'll finally see the opposition to these continued wars that ruin other countries and bankrupt ours. Maybe there's still time for this country not to go the way of Rome. Maybe a war tax will be so unpopular that we'll finally stop being the bully around the globe.

Switch to a system used very successfully by "the terrorists". Simply employ a User Fee – a voluntary contribution of funds by those who want to play this deadly game. No need to bother those pesky peaceniks for their ca$h.
