Pentagon officials: Obama to announce strategy 'early next week'

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Barack Obama is expected to announce his Afghanistan strategy "early next week," senior Pentagon officials told CNN Tuesday.

The officials would not speak on the record because there has not been an official announcement.

Several media reports have said the announcement will be on Tuesday, December 1.

The officials said that after the announcement, the current thinking is that Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Michael Mullen will testify to the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees for both the House and Senate.

It is expected that Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top commander in Afghanistan, will also testify on the Hill after the principals do, the officials said.

If sure that the families of troops who have died while he dithered will be so happy.

    Here's my recommendation:

Let's send 40,000 troops to arrest or send to Guantanamo all the Right Wing-Nuts and their racist lackeys.

While we're at it, let's throw in the Catholic Bishops and C-Street ministers so that they can be with their flock!

If we get anything before the first of the year I'd be amazed.

How about announce his strategy for running the country like a democracy again and not a autocracy?

After seven years of reactionary, unthoughtful war policy of the previous administration, I am glad to have a commander in chief that doesn't run our defense policy like a rank amatuer.

For all of the hubris, lives and money the GWB crowd spent on two wars it is ashamed Mr Obama has to sift through the wreakage of decisions made by his predessors in order to try and get it right.

Mr President your seriousness is well respected by all of our veterans.

To be honest I agree that it was taking a bit too long, even if we consider all the variables and possible consequences of said decision, but it's good that he at least can be blamed for thinking too much in an issue instead of thinking to little (or not thinking at all) like the previous administration.

  10. Wait and see

Before sending additional troops to help us win the war over there (ha ha ha) Obama's team needs to run the political poll numbers to see how much this will aaffect his reelection prospects. As Rahm Emmanuel stated: "it is far more important to us to have the necessary "political cover" than it is for our troops to have the needed "air or artillery cover" Emmanuel went on to explain that while the lack of additional troops would cost only a few hundred US lives, sending too many troops could cost Obama millions of votes.

Better to do it right than to do it fast.

Always remember that if this important confict had not been allowed to fester for 7 years this would not even be a discussion right now. It was the amazing stupidity of the bush foreign policy team that got us here. Thankfully we have an intelligent and well reasoned man to help guide us out of the deep pit into which bush and the conservatives shoved us. this is one of the many areas we are starting to see get cleaned up. But of course it takes time to clean up 8 years of manure from a rogue elephant....

Wow.....so many leaks in the Obama House. They already know its going to be around 34,000 troops and where they are going. People in Obama's circle need to keep their mouths shut. I thought Obama was smater than that anyway, to send so many troops. He should have shook up the world and pulled out. Let the place become a safe heaven for all the extremist. Encourage them to work out of Afghanistan and have ther training camps there. Then when the place is full of them, take care of the whole bunch with a hot one.
