Dick Cheney says he has no interest in running for president.
Dick Cheney says he has no interest in running for president.

Washington (CNN) - Dick Cheney's throwing cold water on a new group's effort to try and convince the former vice president to seek the Republican presidential nomination in the next race for the White House.

"Draft Dick Cheney 2012" officially launched on Friday and unveiled a new Web site. The group hopes to follow up the on-line launch with a more formal structure, which they say will include building a database and reaching out through social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

So what does Cheney think of the push to motivate him to seek the White House?

"Why would I want to do that?" he replied. "It's been a hell of a tour. I've loved it. I have no aspirations for further office," Cheney said in an interview with Politico.

Prior to his two terms as vice president, Cheney also served as Secretary of Defense under the first President Bush, a congressman from Wyoming for six terms, and chief of staff to President Gerald Ford.

Cheney told Politico that what he considers the likely midterm congressional losses for the Democrats next year "point in the direction of a very competitive situation in 2012, a very respectable shot for the Republicans of taking back the presidency."

In the interview, which Politico published early Tuesday, Cheney said it's "far too soon to be handicapping" which Republicans may run in 2012, but added that "we've got a lot of folks, I'm sure, who will want to pursue it. I haven't committed and don't expect to anytime soon."

As for a potential White House bid by Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and last year's GOP vice presidential nominee, Cheney said he likes her personally, calling her "charming [and] engaging."

"She's got as much right to be out there as anybody else. Will she be a candidate at some point? How would she do as a candidate? Those are all questions that only time will tell," Cheney said.

If this was April 1st you can laugh it off as a joke. But his daughter must be as whacky as he is. But I have to say, he has the sense to face reality. No way in Hades HE would even get the nod, much less the position.

John   December 1st, 2009 11:00 am ET

Wasn't he already President?

david   December 1st, 2009 10:59 am ET

I agree that we should draft dick cheney. into the military

Yeah, Dick. Sit back and count your millions, you crook.

Sean   December 1st, 2009 10:56 am ET

Good. Now crawl into your hole and go away! The world is done with you and your hateful positions.

Bugl3t   December 1st, 2009 10:55 am ET

Of course he has no interest... he's already made his money in two wars and I'm sure he's smart enough to realize that he would NEVER be elected... Can you imagine the negative campaign ads his competitors could (and should) run?

The man should be sentenced to jail for the rest of his life for taking this country into its current state.

Purnell Meagre   December 1st, 2009 10:55 am ET

Ahem ... I can understand why there would be a demand ... harrrumph .. for my services ... this new guy in the ... harrumph ... White House ... he's nothing but an amateur – and that vice-President of his – who is it Biden? I sure kicked that Edwards ass in the debate ... harrumph ... he had a pre- 9/11 mentality ... he didn't understand that we're under attack ... I'm under attack right this minute ... Flying monkeys again ... LIz ... Lizzz It's the flying monkeys!!!

Hold that thought Dickie! We don't need your kind of "leadership" ever again.

true american   December 1st, 2009 10:54 am ET

What a shame! We could have had a wise experienced person like Cheney at the helm. Instead we have an immature nartsistic naive childman trying to be loved by all.

What???   December 1st, 2009 10:53 am ET

Really? We're serious about this? I mean really?

The current administration has been in office for 11 months and most would say the problems they have were inherited. So.....we americans want to go back to the previous approach as authored Mr. Cheney...... because they handled things so well? Really?

Please explain one of you GOP supporters the reason for this.

kgeukes Michigan   December 1st, 2009 10:53 am ET

Darth Vader and Caribou Barbie could glean the lowest vote percentage in modern times . . .

Oh, brother. That would be a great PR opportunity for the Democrats.

Ms. Bernardi   December 1st, 2009 10:50 am ET

IF he is telling the truth, we can all breathe a sign of relief. After his tenure as Vice President (so to speak), are there any countries in the world who would respect him as President?

Don   December 1st, 2009 10:49 am ET

Didn't some other people try to draft Dick Cheney many years ago? As soon as he heard about this effort he probably went down and applied for that sixth deferment.

James Brooklyn N.Y.   December 1st, 2009 10:48 am ET

Dick Cheney is a traitor to the US. He help destroy this country for profit. He should rot is prison

Randall S   December 1st, 2009 10:48 am ET

Thank you Dick Cheney.

I'm sure I speak for milions of Americans: we are very glad you have no further aspirations for public office.

We've had enough of your so-called leadership, such as:

1. lack of competent economic leadership
2. the endless war in Iraq( yes, it's still at war)
3. a war in Afghanistan
4. lack of educational leadership. Too many Americans are out of work because they are not qualified to hold a 21st century job
5. creating a phobic, paranoid country just like ole President Wilson did after WW1 with his American Protective League

Yes, you really mucked things up. Goodbye Forever.

bob   December 1st, 2009 10:47 am ET

Thank God! Cheney would finish what he started under Bush if he ran and won.

Korean War Baby   December 1st, 2009 10:47 am ET

Are you kidding? I voted twice for Bush/Cheney, but there's no way I would endorse half that ticket. The republicans need to come up with a fresh face who can articulate the parties core values–fiscal responsibility, small government, etc. "W" betrayed the average conservative. Pawlenty or Huckabee, yes; Cheney, no.

KMAN   December 1st, 2009 10:43 am ET

The GOP would be much better off if they at least tried to recruit a presidential candidate for 2012 that had a snowballs chance in hell of winning? the DICK??? the QUITTER??? These folks are obviously delusional.

Rick   December 1st, 2009 10:41 am ET

Haha ! That's hilarious ! You guys are too much. I know, let's put Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin on the same ticket, the order doesn't matter. After they get elected they can bring W back as the Education Secretary, Rummy back as the War Czar (cause he's sooo good at starting wars), and a few more "nearly deads" from Republican Administrations past to round out the team. Gosh, I'll bet by the end of their first term they could knock us all back to covered wagon days.
"Hey Dick, there's a quail on your head".

James   December 1st, 2009 10:41 am ET

JimB   December 1st, 2009 10:36 am ET

Dick Cheney as President in 2012?? Maybe THAT's what the Mayans are warning us about!!!

David   December 1st, 2009 10:35 am ET

Cheney's election in 2012 would just prove the Mayan calendar is correct. He would certainly lead the world to mass destruction and multiple useless wars that are only logical in his Darth Vader mind. Funny, why doesn't any journalist ask him to explain his reasons for putting his own butt on the line in Vietnam rather than dodging the draft with every possible excuse? A war hawk like Cheney should prove their metal on the battlefield first prior to sending others over there. Tell us, Dick, why did you get SEVEN deferments and avoid fighting when it was YOUR time in Vietnam?

Kraig Rasool   December 1st, 2009 10:35 am ET

In all the years that Cheney has been in and out of the press...for
things that he may have done or been a part of . I can say alas this
answer to the question of him running in 2012 is the best answer
and best thing has have ever said.....

Greg from Virgnina   December 1st, 2009 10:33 am ET

Because he knows that his HATE mongering will not work on the American People any more and he'll had over victory to Obama, just like Palin will do.

BestProfitCompany = WAR   December 1st, 2009 10:33 am ET

Cheney doesn't want to run because he doesnt care about America. If he really cared he would run for President. If he really believed what he is saying, he would run for President. He only cares about bringing down the President so he wants America to fail. If the neo-cons can't have it their way then no one gets their way. Dick, go get another heart because you dont have one!

John Starnes Tampa Florida   December 1st, 2009 10:33 am ET

Heck, he used his connections to avoid the draft and serving his country FIVE TIMES during Vietnam.....he can claim health problems to avoid this draft too.

jeff   December 1st, 2009 10:32 am ET

Why isn't this traitor in jail for war crimes at least?

Guido   December 1st, 2009 10:32 am ET

To think that there are people in this country who actually LIKE the idea of Darth Vader running the country.

Do we get Imperial stormtroopers too?

Mike   December 1st, 2009 10:31 am ET

No one named Cheney should be running for president.

Eric   December 1st, 2009 10:31 am ET

Jackie in Dallas   December 1st, 2009 10:31 am ET

Taylor   December 1st, 2009 10:31 am ET

Noooo don't want Cheney as President. He wasn't a good Vice President and wasn't active like Joe Biden is.

Dgeorge   December 1st, 2009 10:31 am ET

With this man we would be fighting wars after wars . Who need this type of person. Let him go away , we are sick of this joker. Are the repubs party so thin.

A. P. from California   December 1st, 2009 10:30 am ET

Dick Cheney couldn't even get elected troop leader of our Cub Scout reserves unit. The GOP is becoming increasingly delusional since sniveling about their losses in 2008. They just don't get it...they're iodeology is obsolete. During times of expensive war....you cannot give tax cuts to the rich leaving only the poor, and middle class to pay for our country in war. It becomes a "recipe" for economic ruin. The GOP is too developmentally challenged to understand it.....

Laurie in Spokane   December 1st, 2009 10:30 am ET

OMG If Cheney were to run for POTUS, and perchance WIN!!! I'd seriously consider moving out of the country. Instead of a candidate for POTUS he should be a candiate for a prison term.

The mere thought of having Cheney as President would be a vote for Armageddon.

As VP, and the power behind the throne, he was conniving, evil and totally misguided, but I suspect he would have the full support of Rush Limbaugh and all of his extreme right wing rabid fanatics.

hdrider69   December 1st, 2009 10:28 am ET

Excuse me while I throw up. It's amazing how many people escape from asylums and go unnoticed..until they come up with ideas like drafting Cheny for president.

John in Tampa   December 1st, 2009 10:28 am ET

That wasn't a NO. And much as I don't agree with this man I think he is clearly the most experienced, consistent and stable Republican out there.

Doraine Gordon   December 1st, 2009 10:28 am ET

How dumb for anyone to even suggest Cheney. Look at his failing health. Why would anyone even consider a man wih so many health problems? Four heart attacks plus other stuff. He has to be taking alot of powerful medication. To even suggest him is just plain stupid. The GOP had better sure come up with some other people if they ever plan to get back into the WH. All I see right now are a bunch of losers!!

Yeah ok. He knows he would never be elected as President. These people are idiots if they think America is that STUPID. And he still has the nerve to speak out against Obama and the War. He must have forgotten that we have been in this war for 8 years and apparantly his strategies have failed America. He's such a loser and so irrelevant. NEXT!!!

Texas Blue   December 1st, 2009 10:26 am ET

Cheney has a history of avoiding any form of a draft.

John   December 1st, 2009 10:25 am ET

He already was president for eight years. George Bush was Vice-President. Because of term limits, he can't run again.

Mountain Dude   December 1st, 2009 10:25 am ET

A war criminal and a secessionist, Cheney is probably just happy he isn't in jail for breaking our treaties and using torture. “Water-boarding” is just a euphemism for water torture and it has been known as torture for hundreds of years.

Dave   December 1st, 2009 10:24 am ET

Too bad. We need a President with a backbone. One who can make a decision. One who is for low taxes, low deficits, and less government.

BUT... most of you wanted "change" so, good luck with that.
What we have so far:
-The dollar falling faster than ever before.
-Unemployment heading up to 15% or more
-TRILLIONS in deficits
-A commander in chief that ignores the generals for 2 + months then negotiates on the mission because of politics
-government run car companies & banks
-A white house that still believes in the bogus man-made global warming theory
-Health care reform that cost a trillion+ and STILL does NOT cover over 20 million people nor fix most the isses, all it does is give government more power and control
-A cap & trade bill that is stup like the health care bills: government control & power over the energy companies and ALL companies for that matter with bogus taxes and fines.

WAKE UP PEOPLE

beats back? nice headline CNN   December 1st, 2009 10:23 am ET

equally damaging, equally out of control?

I agree with Cheney on this one, stay retired... you got rich enough off of the American people, we may never recover from your disasterous steamroller of our rights, economy, our environment, our national defense... there are just so many things you distroyed in your term while framing what you thought was putting the U.S. in some kind of whackjob far right position via the world

it will take years to recover from your bad vision of the world

disgusted independent   December 1st, 2009 10:23 am ET

As an ex-republican who went independent when Jesus started thinking for the party, I have a message for the religious right: Get over Cheney and Palin, they each had a role in screwing up this country and the political party along with the majority of other Republican idiots during the bush-cheney years. Step aside and let people who don't quote the bible every 4 seconds fix the mess you all made by putting them in office. And try thinking for yourselves, the bible doesn't have all the answers.

Rick McDaniel   December 1st, 2009 10:22 am ET

While there is no doubt that Dick Cheney is a very capable person, whether you agree with him on issues or not, his heart condition, and the public backlash against the Dubya administration, would not make him a good and viable candidate for 2012.

The GOP needs new candidates, for the public to consider, and they need candidates with some moderation in philosophy. The GOP cannot continue to disenfranchise significant portions of the US population, in their approach to the gay community (based on their excessive religious position), nor can they continue to disenfranchise women, with their position on abortion, and attempt to dictate to women what they can or cannot do, with their own bodies.

Until the GOP moderates their position on those 2 issues, at least in their candidates, they will struggle to succeed.

dennisk   December 1st, 2009 10:22 am ET

Not running for President is the best thing Dick Cheney has ever done for this country.

Tom C   December 1st, 2009 10:22 am ET

He worked to keep us safe for seven years and understands the need to be careful in spending taxpayer money.

William   December 1st, 2009 10:20 am ET

I doubt that Mr. Cheney will run for POTUS. However, it would be refreshing to see a candidate that would protect the homeland, enforce existing immigration laws, negotiate with adversaries from a position of strength, lower taxes to stimulate economic activity, and one who would publicly tout the greatness of the USA and capitalism. Not sure who that candidateis but they will have my support.

blue state   December 1st, 2009 10:20 am ET

Too bad. Cheney as the "evil empire" candidate (if not in jail as a war criminal) is perfect. Maybe the Republicans are going for the "paranoid idiot" ticket: Palin Dobbs, or Palin Beck. Either candidate(s) would make certain a Democratic win.

Why would Dick Cheney join the Republican Party? That would basically make him a hypocrite. He would be going against President Obama and everything he believes in. I think it would be unethical for him to switch parties.

Doug   December 1st, 2009 10:12 am ET

All rational thinking Americans know that Dick Cheney has played a major role in keeping our nation safe for 8 years and that his comments now come from his love of this nation and his desire for us to remain safe and powerful.

We must look at the political correctness of the Democrats that allowed the 9/11 hijackers to learn to fly a plane without a desire to land and the latest at Fort hood and ask why the libs are allowing this sillyness to thwart our safety. Just treat all Americans the same and we will be safer for it.

michele cvet   December 1st, 2009 10:06 am ET

If Dick Cheney even RAN for President, let alone be nominated, I would have to move out of the country during his tenure. Since I don't have much money and live in Florida, I would probably have to move to the Bahamas–not my living style, but in my mind and heart, he is and always has been a bad American.

Texas Annie *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*   December 1st, 2009 10:06 am ET

First of all, Cheney couldn't run for President. That would mean he would have to come out & show his face in public instead of hiding out like some rat in a hole the way he did the last entire term as vice president.
Secondly, he did a nice job of side stepping giving a real answer to the Palin question. His response sort of reads like "well, she's an engaging person but dumb as a stump".
(And we already had one of those "engaging" people in office– ie: GWB– and we saw how that turned out.)

Sniffit   December 1st, 2009 10:06 am ET

"Draft Dick Cheney 2012"

LOL...figures...he dodging this one too...

R Arthur Miller   December 1st, 2009 10:04 am ET

You are a smart man. You set this country back 8 years while you were the President and Bush was Vice President. You know and I know enough is enough.

Expat American   December 1st, 2009 10:03 am ET

Cheney is the old guard. Let the man be.
The GOP needs a new face, a new start...and a new approach...the human element has been replaced by the extreme theoretical fire and brimstone preaching of the Right.

What happened to that classic Simply Read lyric paying homage to President Reagan?

"Let's talk about money, money..."

Put an intelligent mind and likeable face on that perhaps.

larry   December 1st, 2009 10:02 am ET

Of course he doesn't have to seek office again. He made millions from financially raping the American people and he continues to make millions. That's all he was in for.

Micheal   December 1st, 2009 10:02 am ET

I thinks this country needs someone like Dick to run for the office of the Presidency (this is coming from a staunch democrat).

Josh   December 1st, 2009 10:01 am ET

As a Republican having "Dick" as our candidate can be the worst mistake we've ever made (Yes, worse than Palin). Cheney needs to shut up, stop giving interviews, and wait for his ticker to fail while spending the millions of dollars he's made off Haliburton. Every time he opens his mouth the Democrats do better on the polls.
Follow the steps of Mike Huckabee who will criticize but will actually have an alternate plan; we need to stop saying no and come up with a plan of why we say no. "Dick", just shut up and stop hurting us; you and Georgie Porgie are the reason we have this President.

Really???   December 1st, 2009 10:01 am ET

And Americans have no aspirations of having him in office. Done.

BILL   December 1st, 2009 10:01 am ET

Dick Cheney doesn't want to run for office? Good thing because he has no chance of being elected. My, what an egotist.

Surounded guy in Kansas   December 1st, 2009 10:00 am ET

So, here I am in a "RED" state, surrounded by political Neanderthals. There are quite a few in Kansas who think the former vice president is a caveman. However, the scary part is there are even more who would vote for him for president in a New York minute.

It would be hard to comprehend the further damage this sinister, nefarious, dark little man could do to our country. His saying he's not interested in the job is the ONLY intelligent thing this villan has said in the last 10 years!

geecee   December 1st, 2009 9:57 am ET

Don't we have term limits on the Presidency in this Country? He already served for 8 years as PRESIDENT, so he has had his chance at destroying the country, and he did a really good job of it!!!

Randy, San Francisco   December 1st, 2009 9:57 am ET

Cheney's future for the next 50 years should be a 10 foot by 10 foot cell for war crimes against humanity.

Robert   December 1st, 2009 9:55 am ET

Tiresome.. Could the press please retire the former (vice)president please. His criticisms of Obama for taking the time to form a policy is really tiresome. And it's dirty politics.

I sure hope they run Palin/Beck or Palin/Bachmann or Palin/Santorum in 2012. Or Cheney/anyone...

Any of these scenarios will ensure President Obama is easily re-elected..

Eddie B.   December 1st, 2009 9:55 am ET

I wish he did run so he can unleash his evil wrath on the other GOP candidates like Palin. I don't think the GOP has anyone that wants to run or that will have mass appeal. Palin is just enjoying making money and not having any responsibility. Huckabee just got unveiled as the Governor who commuted the Washington Police Murder. The only guy left is Romney.

a ruiz   December 1st, 2009 9:55 am ET

Such people are fools. The man's a criminal who should be in prison not public office.

GP   December 1st, 2009 9:55 am ET

Cheney running in 2012 would indeed be the apocalypse. We'll be undoing the damage Cheney is responsible for long after 2012.

Dean   December 1st, 2009 9:55 am ET

Yeah draft Dick Cheney and maybe he will pick Sarah to me the VP that will assure a second term for Obama.

Bob in VA   December 1st, 2009 9:53 am ET

LOL Dick Cheney? He'd make Obama vs Palin look like a nailbiter. He might be the most hated man in the US.

Patsy, Texas   December 1st, 2009 9:53 am ET

Best new I've heard today. Hope he means it. Now, if he would
just go fishin'.

American Expat   December 1st, 2009 9:53 am ET

Como on Dick, get in there! And, choose Ms. Palin as your running mate! The Democrats need you to insure a landslide victory in 2012. But, things have changed, if the one in a million chances you would win, you will not be able to start anymore wars or hoodwind the American people. Too many have got your number now!

djb   December 1st, 2009 9:53 am ET

god willing he will be put way out to pasture by then. he has created enough damage and really needs to go. i just wish he would also shut his lying mouth.

bc   December 1st, 2009 9:52 am ET

Just another GOP group with money to waste!

CG   December 1st, 2009 9:52 am ET

Oh please, please let the likes of Cheney and Palin run, the comedy value alone is priceless, but it would also guarantee an Obama re-election.

Silence Dogoode   December 1st, 2009 9:51 am ET

Cheney has already served his time. The RNC needs to get fresh people. People who are moderate and have good background in economics and international relations.

Houston Mom   December 1st, 2009 9:50 am ET

Please run Mr. Cheney. We are all searching for the final nail for the Republican Parties coffin and this certainly would be it.

Cheney/Limbaugh 2012

The end of the Republican Party for once and for all.

Josh NYC   December 1st, 2009 9:50 am ET

He's not going to run. Stop wasting space on the ticker. We need to be talking about Obama and the mess he is making.

Royster   December 1st, 2009 9:50 am ET

I NEVER thought I would say this but....THANKS DICK CHENEY!!!
Stay where you are, thankfully out of office, and with your finger no longer on 'the war button'! We are still trying to FORGET the last 8 years and your infamy.

Maryann Valentino   December 1st, 2009 9:50 am ET

...and who would be his running mate? Charles Manson?

A. Goodwin   December 1st, 2009 9:49 am ET

Seriously – are there actually people out there who WANT this man back in office? SCARY!!! This man should not be anywhere NEAR the White House....honestly, he should be in JAIL!!!

I guess it goes to show you how nutty the right wing fringe of the Repulican party truly is to want this man back in power. The Republican party continues its push toward non-existance. Really a shame, America needs a 2+ party system.

Bear   December 1st, 2009 9:49 am ET

Everybody knows that Dick Cheney will dodge any draft.

phyllis   December 1st, 2009 9:48 am ET

I guess the war mongers in the republican party just can't get enough, of the Bush Cheney war monger machine.

Dick Cheney knows he would never be elected, if he was to go and be a complete fool and run in 2010.

They should put him and fellow war monger, Sarah Palin on same ticket, that would be a hoot, for the tea baggers.

Thank you.

proczach   December 1st, 2009 9:48 am ET

Look, I love the guy, he's great, but with all the possible candidates, why pick someone with a lot of serious heart trouble?

Dmitri Lowry   December 1st, 2009 9:46 am ET

Perhaps a more moderate choice, like say, David Duke?

Jim   December 1st, 2009 9:45 am ET

personally speaking, i'd prefer the republicans pony up a realistic candidate. cheney, palin or any other such rediculous suggestion won't improve our government. I think obama is doing just fine, and currently he has my vote, but no one should be allowed to "coast" in 2012.

Anonymous   December 1st, 2009 9:44 am ET

He has already been president for 8 years, why do it again?

Ray Jackson, Ms   December 1st, 2009 9:43 am ET

Oh pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease let it happen. That will be the final nail in the GOP's coffin.

Ron Mexico   December 1st, 2009 9:42 am ET

I thought you could only serve a max of two terms as president? (Yes, that's sarcasm)

Jason   December 1st, 2009 9:42 am ET

The day he becomes president I will swallow a cyanide pill

Midwest   December 1st, 2009 9:42 am ET

He'd never run again because he'd face real scrutiny about his actions during his time as Vice President and there's no good ending to that inquiry.

Now shut and go away, Dick. We've had enough of you, your avarice and your incompetence.

Stacie   December 1st, 2009 9:42 am ET

Hasn't Dick done enough to ruin this country? Who on earth would want him to return to any public office?

Brian G, Sugar Land, TX   December 1st, 2009 9:41 am ET

Aaaaarrrrgggghhh!
Run, run, run for cover "the Cheney" is loose again.

Mark   December 1st, 2009 9:41 am ET

Come on everyone, Mr Cheney has a full schedule as Satan's representative on earth. But, if you want to help Mr Cheney you can send him your children. He must regularly feed on the blood of the innocent.

a e shaw   December 1st, 2009 9:40 am ET

Then quit your bellyachin about the current admin. If you want, tell us how effective your administration was in Afghanistan and against Bin Ladin.

And please show the biological and atomic weapons from Iraq. You lied to use fear to invade Iraq for financial gain.

Tell us the names or at least the number of injured and killed Americans and Iraqis.

Joshua Ludd   December 1st, 2009 9:40 am ET

and Cheney dodges yet another draft. At least this time I am happy about it.

profadrock   December 1st, 2009 9:40 am ET

I saw what happened when Cheney became president in 2012...It was in this movie I saw called: "2012." California fell into the sea and the Earth's poles shifted. Scary stuff....

BEACHBUM3   December 1st, 2009 9:39 am ET

If the republican party want to garnatee that the dems win in 2012 go ahead an nominate cheney for presdident an it will gaurntee that the dem's will win in 2012 thank you

Chipster   December 1st, 2009 9:38 am ET

Hasn't Cheney done enough damage to our country? We've had enough fear and paranoia to deal with as a result of his Presidency – uh – Vice? Given another opportunity, there's no telling who he would shoot in the face! Cheney should stick to canned hunts and allow us time to repair the damage from 2 wars and the doubled deficit that he and Jr left behind.

Thomas, Baton Rouge, LA   December 1st, 2009 9:38 am ET

He couldn't withstand the scrutiny anyway.

Anon   December 1st, 2009 9:38 am ET

Great. The man who destroyed Dubya and his presidency wants to do it on his own now? Back into his hole, please. Don't forget the tape for his mouth.

Laura   December 1st, 2009 9:37 am ET

This man again? A walking disaster area.

Mike   December 1st, 2009 9:36 am ET

Wasn't he already president?
Review of his accomplishments:
Ignored warnings which led to 9/11
Invaded Iraq, who was not reponsible for 9/11
Allowed Bin Laden to escape
Gave tax break to the wealthy and then watched our economy go into the toilet
Promoted domestic spying
Yep, he deserves to be in charge, in prison!

phoenix86   December 1st, 2009 9:35 am ET

Cheney would be a great president and the United States will need one after the debacle of the Obama years. Three more and the door for Obama.

Less than a year for Pelosi's reign of terror in the House.
Less than a year until Reid is retired.

Things are looking better indeed.

FactCheck   December 1st, 2009 9:35 am ET

To do list:
Stuff stock portfolio through no-bid contracts to Halliburton.
Create a "war on terror" to divert and ensure second office term.
Re-establish the culture war to ensure speaking tours after Presidency.
Generate net worth on the backs of those useless poor folk (who are only good for taking Iraqi bullet fire).

Looks like Cheney has done everything that he would ever want. Why indeed would he run again in 2012.

southerncousin   December 1st, 2009 9:35 am ET

Considering the oxygen thief that is currently serving as our vice president and the lying union puppet that is our president, Cheney was sure a refreshing bit of honesty and integrity.

Jack in Florida   December 1st, 2009 9:35 am ET

Finally, a statement from Dick Cheney I take great comfort in!!!

Dominican mama 4 Obama   December 1st, 2009 9:34 am ET

It is nothing short of ironic that phrases like "Draft Dick Cheney 2012" and "It's been a hell of a tour" are being used in reference to this 5 time draft dodger. A man who hasn't seen a tour of anything resembling combat, unless you count the two wars that he sent our children to while he screwed the country with his no-bid contracts, violations of the Constitution, and International Laws.

The only thing that Dick should be running for is the border. And quite frankly the amigos to the South would love to get their hands on him and give him the spanish version of "enhanced interrogations techniques". Lying, thieveing, coward.

Thomas   December 1st, 2009 9:34 am ET

" I have no aspirations for further office," Cheney said "

At last something Cheney and I can agree upon.

I also have no aspirations for further office for Cheney.

Mark   December 1st, 2009 9:33 am ET

Please run Cheney. I would love to see you get your backside torn up.

Jim   December 1st, 2009 9:33 am ET

Good...maybe Cheney can go back to his bunker and be quiet.

TM   December 1st, 2009 9:33 am ET

Anyone who knows history knows you can't DRAFT Cheney. He got FIVE deferments during Vietnam because he had "more important" things to do, and he's defering now.

D. Tree   December 1st, 2009 9:32 am ET

Good, the American people don't want you to run for office anyway DIck – only a handful of fringe people do.

Brice   December 1st, 2009 9:31 am ET

Don't want him, if he's our president in 2012. We will be in World War 3.

CL   December 1st, 2009 9:30 am ET

A Cheney candidacy would be death for the Republican party. Besides, he lacks the character and backbone to take on a presidential run. Cowards need not apply. It is too difficult an ordeal.

Jeff in Houston   December 1st, 2009 9:28 am ET

The very concept of this man in any kind of office makes Canada look better every day. If America would ever take complete leave of its senses and re-elect this creature, we would deserve the doom we asked for.

sue   December 1st, 2009 9:26 am ET

Which means that he is having Rove work behind the scenes for him to get it all going. Funny though how he couldn't even come to the convention in 2008.....

Scott   December 1st, 2009 9:26 am ET

Yes, and breaking the laws of our nation and committing war crimes for 8 years is enough anyway.

vwrtb   December 1st, 2009 9:25 am ET

Don't worry repugs. The sith always comes in twos... There is an apprentice somewhere...

Tram   December 1st, 2009 9:23 am ET

WHY would anyone want someone like Cheney in the White House? Wasn't 8 years of his mismanagement enough of a disaster for this country?

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   December 1st, 2009 9:22 am ET

If Cheney ran in 2012, that will be a blatant smack in the face of the people. We want the war criminal behind bars.

Fred the Moderate   December 1st, 2009 9:22 am ET

OH NO, PLEASE RUN! Take the GOP nomination, Please, Please, Please!!!!!!

Hey you can even pal around with Palin!!!!!! doesn't that sound sexy?

Ignore the recent GOP poll which asked 1000 Republicans who carries their values and you only got 1, yes "ONE" vote.

And please keep talking about and attacking President Obama, it helps so much!!!!!!!!

Please, Please, Please......................

Jared from Delaware   December 1st, 2009 9:21 am ET

So this "Draft Cheney" group must have like 3 members at most in total.

After all, how many decent, ethical, quality people would actually consider voting for a man that the vast majority of the American populace considers so evil and immoral?

I'd love it if he got the GOP nomination. That would mean I could start celebrating Obama's re-election today!

Sharon   December 1st, 2009 9:21 am ET

It's a good thing that he does not want to run. Dick- the five time deferrment-Cheney needs to stay in the same undisclosed location that he did during the last 8 years along with his big mouth daughter, Liz. He is a disgrace and definitely someone who would cause massive voters to the polls against the Republicans. I really hope he attempts to run for President, along with Palin!!!!!!

Shaun   December 1st, 2009 9:21 am ET

Oh to bad. I wanted a gurantee for Obama for another 4 years. This guy is Satan.

Luigi   December 1st, 2009 9:20 am ET

Of course Cheney doesnt have any interest in becoming President. It would be REALLY hard to run a Shadow Government with unlimited power by being in the public eye possibly every moment of the day

Chris ~ Albany, NY   December 1st, 2009 9:20 am ET

LOL...the left and moderates hate this guy more than the right hates Obama!!! Go for it Dick!

Thos   December 1st, 2009 9:20 am ET

Dick Chaney is one of the most evil men alive and is directly responsible for much of the travesty that was the "W" years. Why would anyone want this man in office?

Bob   December 1st, 2009 9:19 am ET

Throwing cold water on the effort to draft him for 2012???? What a joke. The real cold water was that only one of 800+ people queried named Cheney as the voice of the Republican party!! After all of his public relations interviews and his snipes at Obama - ONE PERSON!

Scott   December 1st, 2009 9:19 am ET

Dear God help us if he runs and (gulp) wins.

Yahoo Serious   December 1st, 2009 9:18 am ET

seriously? there are people who are actually trying to get him to run? he wasn't even welcome at the RNC last year...

Richard Boler   December 1st, 2009 9:18 am ET

Indeed, why would he want to do that? Having failed spectacularly, he would rather sit on the sidelines and criticize his successors.

Andrew   December 1st, 2009 9:17 am ET

Thank God he's not running!

ran   December 1st, 2009 9:17 am ET

It will be hard to run in 2012 when he will be or should be in jail by then.

CNN why do you keep given this guy and Palin so much time?

Why not give our troops the time instead?

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   December 1st, 2009 9:16 am ET

Yes the dictatorship is over..... but not forgotten...

CHANGE.COM   December 1st, 2009 9:16 am ET

Draft Cheney to serve in Iraq. His primary role should be to clear the roads of all the IED's!

Kevin Collins   December 1st, 2009 9:15 am ET

Heh! Yeah, GOPers are always saying they value military service yet 'ol Cheney got 5 deferments from avoiding serving in Vietnam. Goes to show the Republican motto: Do what we say; don't do what we do.

steve   December 1st, 2009 9:15 am ET

The criminal justice system in this country is flawed.
Why would somebody be sentenced to 90yrs in prison for burglary and theft .That`s is excessive and unfair . Maurice clemonts was a test-tube case.

Concerned American   December 1st, 2009 9:15 am ET

How come CNN never talks about our national debt and Pelosi raising our health care cost?

Clint, Lynnwood Wa.   December 1st, 2009 9:14 am ET

Pretty hard to run a campaign from prison.

Indy   December 1st, 2009 9:14 am ET

Good to know the war criminal will not be running for POTUS, the only person that could be worse then Cheney is Palin. The people responsible for this so called draft are all due back in their hospital beds. They need to take their med's now and let the delusions of grandur slowly fade away.

Jeanne H.   December 1st, 2009 9:14 am ET

Yeah! Draft Dick Cheny!! (It's about time! He has skirted the draft 5 times already!!!)

Open Your 3rd Eye   December 1st, 2009 9:13 am ET

He might get 1 vote.

Ernie   December 1st, 2009 9:13 am ET

He is not a good candidate because he has a bad heart and not be able to last the entire campaign that would make him a liability. If he didn't have a bad heart he would be a great candidate.

Saad   December 1st, 2009 9:12 am ET

For once he is a wise man! And for the people who want him to be our country's President, they have GOT to change their. They absolutely have to. For their sake plus the sake of their kids and their neighbors, they have to change what they are eating. They are RETARDED :) :):)

JT in Fla   December 1st, 2009 9:12 am ET

It's a good thing Dick Cheney doesn't want to run for office in 2012 because he will be in prison for war crimes by that time!

Rick - Ex Marine, Liberal   December 1st, 2009 9:12 am ET

Why would he want to return to the job he did for 8 years already? He's not likely to be drafted to any team on this earth by 2012. My only hope is his daughter isn't either.

gary   December 1st, 2009 9:10 am ET

This is why America had such a low standing in the world over the past 8 years. It is hard for most of the world to fathom anyone wanting darth vader as their leader.

Chris   December 1st, 2009 9:09 am ET

Oh come on man...Run!!! OMG...the Republican primaries would be so interesting!! Also, it would be such a slam dunk for the Democrats if he was their nominee!! LOL

borat   December 1st, 2009 9:09 am ET

Cheney is a simply a tool that has been used by government ...WARdog..not a chance in heck of ever being elected
no one likes him.

Ben in Texas   December 1st, 2009 9:09 am ET

Indict Dick Cheney 2009
Convict Dick Cheney 2010
Execute Dick Cheney 2011

Greg   December 1st, 2009 9:08 am ET

Please run Mr. 19% approval rating. Please get the nomination and we get another four years of Obama trying to fix what you messed up.

Bill   December 1st, 2009 9:08 am ET

LOL – No, he is out and hopefully not going to be the "next old man in line" for the republican nomination. Althought I suspect even Mr Cheney would be able to beat BHO come next election – that is providing BHO hasn't resigned in shame by then!

Mike   December 1st, 2009 9:06 am ET

Dick Chaney for president? Seriously? This is a man who has a blatent disregard for the constitution. The only poster this man's face deserves to be displayed is in a post office.

Justin   December 1st, 2009 9:03 am ET

Dick Cheney would be a terrible candidate. His candidacy would become a referendum on Bush, and we already had one of those in 2008. It would take focus off of Obama and put the Republicans on the defensive. Besides, why would he want to run? Anyone who's spent as much time in the White House as Cheney eventually wants to get out of it. He'll be happy from the side lines, without formal duties..

Republicans need a moderate. Neither Cheney nor Palin fit the bill. Want to beat Obama, particularly if he claims a few successes in the next three years? Run a respected moderate like Colin Powell or Olympia Snowe. I doubt that Powell would run, but perhaps one of the two could at least be drafted as VP.

Frozone   December 1st, 2009 8:59 am ET

Looks like this is the sixth time Cheney has dodged the draft.

Jay   December 1st, 2009 8:55 am ET

Even Dick is not that stupid. Simply because a few greedy pigs who would want this moron back in the White House so they can continue their mindless profiteering doesn't mean that the rest of civilized society wants it too. Anybody with a post high school education easily knows Cheney and Bush were a complete disaster for this country. Except for the likes of Halliburton the world was left in a worse state than before they took office. It is so sad that there are people who still feel this mistake belongs back in control. What for? So we can be at war with Iran and Pakistan, so we can continue to let corporations do what is best for themselves, pay $4/gallon for gas, etc.

No Thanks Dick. I think you've already ruined enough.

Fran, IL   December 1st, 2009 8:54 am ET

Then why does he keep talking? This man has an ego that's the size of China. I've never seen anything like it. If his "tour" is over why doesn't he go away. He should be in jail for war crimes.

sharon, newport news, virginia   December 1st, 2009 8:54 am ET

Please go away!!!!!!! When you were acting President while being selected as Vice President, you publically responded to concerns Americans had for your policies as "so" Now we cannopt shut you uip. Our country is mirred down in economic problems and 2 wars we cannot afford and should not be in and yet here you are criticizing every step he takes to try to clear up YOUR mess you and your daughter need to just go away NOW!!!!!!!!!!! In reality no one really cares what you have to say except the Fox entertainment(NOT NEWS) network and we all know the people on that network are jokes. They remind me of vultures who feed off of useless leftovers which is what you are.

diridi   December 1st, 2009 8:51 am ET

if this idiot wins, america is going to dogs...pretty soon...he will sell america for may be one quarter...he is a biggest idiot, prosecute this nasty idiot...first and talk...

JonDie   December 1st, 2009 8:45 am ET

When will Cheney be indicted? That's really all I want to know.

J.Crobuzon   December 1st, 2009 8:44 am ET

He was already president for eight years. I think he'll be King of Dubai next.
