WEST POINT, New York (CNN) - President Barack Obama called Tuesday for Americans to unite in support of the Afghanistan war effort.
"It is easy to forget that when this war began, we were united - bound together by the fresh memory of a horrific attack, and by the determination to defend our homeland and the values we hold dear," Obama said in announcing the deployment of 30,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan.
"I refuse to accept the notion that we cannot summon that unity again," he said to applause at the U.S. Military Academy. "I believe with every fiber of my being that we - as Americans - can still come together behind a common purpose."

It was refreshing, seeing all those brave young military men and women showing respect for the leader of our great nation. So unlike the cowardly chicken-hawk draft dodgers Cheney and Bush Jr.

You tell that to the masses that is already walking the streets now holding up signs of calling us war mongers and such. It's just like Vietnam it has started all over again. Amereican people maybe not as a whole don't want to pay the price of freedom. Most of these young stupids don't even believe the Germans killed the mass of Jews during WWII. They like the Arabs are a people that someone has to govern for they can not do it for themselves. Americans are fast becoming a nation with all the foreigners sweeping in here of not caring what happens to this country as long as someone will feed them in the meantime and give them health care and welfare money. They certainly will not fight for it. As for the Asghan's and Arabs running their own government. Forget it for 2000 years these people had to have someone telling them what to do. It will never succeed.
It was sad for all Canadians to hear John King repeat several times this evening, while showing a map of Afghanistan, that the brunt of the fight there is borne by the US and the UK, never once mentioning Canada. Recent numbers showed total casualties in Afghanistan for the coalition to be: US 929, UK 236 and Canada 133. No other country is close (the next one is France with 36). Therefore, Canada, with a population of around 33 million people has lost more soldiers per capita in this war than any other country. So, it would be appreciated if CNN recognized this effort, and named Canada as a key partner in the tough war being waged against the taliban in southern Afghanistan.

Actually we were bound together by lies and deception of a criminal executive branch. I don't care if I'm the only dissident or one of millions. I will NEVER support it especially since the fraudulent "leader" of that place is the narco warlord backed mayor of Kabul, the incompetent Karzi. Every American life lost to keep that creep in power is an American tragedy. Not to mention the 2+ million US tax dollars per week to pay for his bodyguards.
There can be unity now that he finally is cooperating with the general.

Obama's call for American Unity is like sending cattle to the slaughter house. Obama needs to lead the troops like Teddy Roosevelt, You gotta Walk the Talk.

I am an indepedent and I was very happy with the presidents speech. The President seemed passionate and well thought out in his approach and did a good job seeming less political and more focused on trying to our own country and bring both sides of the isle together.

We are nearly non-existent economy-wise. We are so far behind the Chinese and even India, I worry about our country.
Yet half the politicians are blubbering over stupid stuff while we collectively go down the tube.

Every president wants us to unite, but then enact policies that drive us apart.
Obama said he would bring the troops home from Iraq and he's following up on that. Obama said he would take the war to the Taliban since Bush forgot that's where our alleged 9-11 hijackers dwelled and their leader. Obama is doing exactly that. He has plans to bring the troops home like he said. To those of you say nasty things about him shut up. You had it your way for the last 8 years 6 of which was under total control of the republicans. Obviously your republican leadership totally failed or our current leader wouldn't have to clean up such a mess. Oh, you must have forgotten that 8 years of republican domination and they didn't do crap except drive the country into it's worse financial situation ever. Obama's a great man and will do a fine job. He's a good man at heart and will make decisions based on what's in the best interest of our nation. I have great faithin him.
