Allies use Obama's Afghan plan as rallying cry

(CNN) – U.S. President Barack Obama's new strategy for Afghanistan earned strong support among global allies with leaders of NATO countries using it as a rallying cry against flagging support for the drawn-out conflict.

But there were also warnings of caution, with other countries and observers urging broader solutions to the Afghan problem - and reports of condemnation and threats from the Taliban militants the troop surge is aimed at defeating.

Among NATO allies, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Australia's Kevin Rudd and French President Nicolas Sarkozy all expressed their backing, with the military alliance's leader pledging troop increases from other partners.

Obama on Tuesday said America would commit 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan, while setting a goal of starting to bring forces home by July 11.

Quick!!! Find something positive about this because it is Obama!

The left wing in this coutnry is upset over it and the right wing is upset over it. Basically, Obama is NOT a commander in chief, he is a poll watching hawk who tried to put together a war plan that had a little bit of everything to appease to everyone; PATHETIC. Everything is politaical to him. everything is about image unless it is about government control over things (economy, health care, energy, banks, car companies, media, etc)
This guy is more and more of a joke each week and basically, it is scary. We need him out of office and his supporters out of congress ASAP!

Those that voted for him have to feel like they were scammed.

It took big ones to analize this Afgan situation thoroughly before announcing the decision. This is much preferred over the world rather then the "shoot first" attitude of the past. To have the allies prepared and informed first is a much better approach then we have seen in the past. After hearing the speech from Obama it is clear how important this mission is, and since Bush put more importance on getting his Dad's enemy and leaving the Afgan region it is time to finish the job. There is no other alternative then to fight for freedom and it simply must be done. I think we will see strong support from allies and we can all thank Obama for that. It was a great speech and was refreshing to not have the fear filled BS that has been used in the past.God Bless this Mission

For President Obama to come up with a plan and have the Republicans in TOTAL agreement with it would not only ruin Rush Limbaugh's day but possibly that of the far right who have to disagree with everything this president does. So of course Sen McCain has to find at least ONE thing wrong with the president's proposal. I'm sure the Taliban will be waiting in their caves with the exit date circled so they can garner a full attack. If it were left up to war hawks like MCcain we would be there FOREVER.

Our Allies are a lot better at asking for help than giving any. I will not hold my breath till they send any troops. If we were paid back war debts for pulling their fat out of the fire in two wars we would not have a deficit. Afghanistan is providing the dope that is killing our young
and protecting the Taliban. It is all about warlords and protecting the poppy fields. Destroy our young and they win the war.

It would appear that the President's conciliatory approach to mending the fences that were trampled by cheney and Co. is paying off with regards to other world powers offering their support in our efforts. I am very proud of our President. I am proud of his deliberation in sending our children to war. I am happy that he did not let his detractors speed up hs decision. Iam happy that he is taking responsibility for it, even though he is coming in midstream. I'd ideally and unrealistically would've rather have everyone for Xmas. I'm a mom, but I am comforted in NOT having a trigger-happy CIC with someone else's children. I wish you luck Mr. President, and my prayers.

Good now go in kill the taliban in every village, cave and mosque. This is not traditional warfare, but we can complete and win this war as long as we find the spine that our leaders had during WW2.

Pollsters, dimwits, politicians, partisans and media read the last three paragraphs of Obama's speech.
This is nothing to do with rhetoric, reading from prompt screens, a lack of consideration , dithering etc., but a well thought out reasonable way forward on an issue that will never have a perfect solution.
The media especially demands answers and worse still speculates about the future but no answers or solutions ( never mind the government Republican or Democrat policy or strategy) just criticism and unfounded speculation of a bunch of experts who hav eless information than the State , defence an homeland security and CIA or FB I have combined all now funnelled to the White House, by the Intelligence supremo half of which at aleast is unknown and rightly so other than to few SECURITY CLEARED INDIVIDUALS who would be guilty of sedition. If Others leaked only partially contextual and realistic data as "Sources" as media you fail your responsibility as " reporters" and lack integrity . Remember even a lowly whistle blower has to prove somehow his /her integrity first.
I am fed up with media not aplying the samre standards to "political sources" a whistle blowers for that which often turns out not to to be real and accurate complete facts in the political world anyway!!
    Regards,
    Hodgson.

Obama will win out in the end because he has gathered the US allies instead of pissing them off like Bush did with his moronic cowboy nonsense.
this is why Obama has done more traveling and taking to other world leaders than Bush ever did.

But no help from any of them. How's that worldwide apology and groveling tour working for you there BO? He has made no friends but has shown he's weak and ineffective, even dangerous, on foreign policy.

GOOD IT'S ABOUT TIME MORE PLAYERS JOIN THE US!

Now, let's use a STRATEGICALLY and TACTICALLY create a coalition that is far more "smarter and superior" than any Talliban presence/threat.

Basic WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING can WIN the WAR decisively and quickly....let's get it OVER....

I love Obama and his thinking. He builds consensus with those who are open to clear thinking. The war mongering Republicans cannot stand a person who is reasonable. The GOP is, after all, a party in decline that, hopefully, will only find a toe hold in the redneck Southern states. All Republicans stink, ALL OF THEM.

Has CNN really checked the facts before they wrote the story?

France has said that they will contribute exactly ZERO troops.

Britian said they will send HALF of what is requested.

    Italy has said MAYBE.

    Germany has said MAYBE.

    Australia has said MAYBE.

Where does CNN get this drivel? It really makes you guys look like lap dogs for the White House. How about putting some substance behind the story?

100,000 troops on the ground is good. If we would have had this kind of commitment from the beginning, this war would be over already. Thanks Bush administration for leaving s in this quagmire.

Micheal Moore and other hateful libs like him are the liars, not Obama. He never said he would withdraw troops from Afganistan and has always said he wants to win this war and will do what it takes to defeat the enemy in Afganistan. Sorry libs, I know you want Al Queda to go free and for Obama to round up all Americans who like Sarah Palin, but it aint gonna happen, well not in his first term.

BTW, Chris Mathews mentioned how the 20-30% of liberals in America feel, that Obama was on enemy grounds at West Point. These liberal Democrats see our military as the enemy, not Al Queda. You can see how the young ones like that kid from California can end up fighting for Al Queda, the result of his America lib brainwashing.

Its about time we had a President that gives more of a crap about his own country than about fighting endless wars while still standing up for the country's position in the world. Good for Obama. He's doing it right, whether the war mongers want to think so or not.

Well I hope these allies ante up and actually join the FIGHTING and not just building roads. I know some of them are actually fighting but others do not fight. AQ has attacked many of these allies as well so they should have a dog in this fight.

And where is the UN's troop contribution? Oh yeah, they are "peace keepers". Next joke. We need to stop wasting money on that useless bunch of tyrants and fools.
