Washington (CNN) - Sen. Bob Corker said Thursday that his daughter is fine but "really sore" after being pulled from her car and thrown to the ground in a carjacking in the nation's capital Wednesday night.
The Tennessee Republican said his 22-year-old daughter, Julia, stopped the family's 2005 Chevy Tahoe not far from their apartment - just nine blocks from the U.S. Capitol building - to help someone she thought needed directions.
"A gentleman appeared, opened the door, grabbed her by the neck," the senator said. "She kicked to try to get away ... and he threw her on the pavement and drove away."
Corker credited the vehicle's OnStar system with helping to locate it, and the suspects were taken into custody a short time later in a parking lot in Seat Pleasant, Maryland.
"It's pretty incredible how quickly they were able to apprehend" the suspects, the senator said. The two people in the car were taken into custody by police in Seat Pleasant after OnStar determined their exact location and showed that the vehicle was not moving, Corker explained.
The Seat Pleasant authorities were notified by OnStar that the stolen car was in their jurisdiction, and were provided the description and tag number of the vehicle, Seat Pleasant Police Sgt. Leroy Patterson told CNN.
"The officers just searched and they saw a vehicle matching that description," Patterson said, adding that the two suspects were taken to a Maryland station to be interviewed by Metropolitan Police detectives. The Metropolitan department "will handle the actual charges, because the incident happened in Washington, D.C.," Patterson explained.
The senator praised the work of the Metropolitan Police the U.S. Capitol Police, the FBI and the Seat Pleasant Police.
He also admitted that he often thought about canceling the OnStar service subscription.
"I was telling the lady who handles that for me in Chattanooga, each month I was saying, 'I don't want to pay this, I don't want to pay this,'" Corker said, adding that it was a nominal fee.
But he kept the service, "thinking that maybe OnStar would be of some help" someday, Corker said.
"Certainly it paid off tremendously last night," he said.

Eric,, are you the RNC payroll. you keep posting dumb messages, must be right after you drink the FAUX news kool-aid
Guess that OnStar commercial I've seen about them getting your stolen car located are true. Hmm... how much are those malibus?
For all of you rocket scientists that believe that this young lady would have been better off had she been armed, take this rare occasion to put on your thinking caps. Can you imagine what could have happened if she tried to pull out a gun on two men who were attempting to carjack her? Surely those of you who are in favor of guns have taken the time to educate yourselves on the stats as it pertains to gun owners. The fact is she has a far greater chance of getting injured or killed by her own gun if she had one during that incident. Let's work on using that organ between the ears a little more.
I am glad Senator Corker's daughter is okay. But I guess if he voted in favor of government support (funding) for more police, better education = less criminals, green and other industries = jobs = less criminals, and oh General Motors with OnStar then his party would out him as a socialist. Just saying...have a nice day.
Corker hijacked his Senate seat in my state of TN....I wonder if Harold Ford had bought an on star maybe we would have a different Senator.
In Orlando we have similar violent crime problems.
Lessons for us all:
1. Never roll down window or open door to help people on street.
2. Never get out of car after accident without calling police first.
A French tourist was shot in the chest and his rental car was stolen after stopping 1 mile from the airport to ask for directions to Disney.
Smart girl to drive a GM product. Most car-jackers would steal something more valuable or dependable. Maybe the car-jackers were so busy profiling her because of her race and gender that they didn't notice the make of the vehicle.
Sorry this had to happen to anyone,I hope the young lady Is doing well.
If it was a liberal senator's daughter, would all the hate crap be posted? That ought to tell you something. Having said that, this is really not national newsworthy
Great that the girl is okey-dokey, but come on, is this really news for the rest of us? A man in Albuquerque, New Mexico EXECUTES his 9 month old daughter due to a domestic problem, and not a whiff by mainstream media. I also agree with all those who say that for the average Joe, the F.B.I., and/or the rest of the Alphabet soup law enforcement, would have not even given a carjacking a passing interest. I am sure that the first call the Senator made, (before calling his own family) was to the FBI, and bingo-bango, his daughter's precious Tahoe is recovered. OnStar deserves the credit for a happy ending.
The fact that she was driving a GM is even more shocking.
Good for the Croker, buying American.
The ACLU will make sure the felons (and potential murderers) who committed this heinous act are out on the street again really soon. The criminals need their own lobby, and that's what ACORN, the ACLU, Obama and Pelosi are all about, protecting criminals, welfare recipients and terrorists at the expense of law abiding citizens.
Glad she's not hurt however another one with no common sense.
No one wants to hear it, but....if she were an ordinary citizen, it's doubtful she'd ever see her car again. Just say my daddy's a senator, and all will scramble for you.
After health care reform, I want "On Star" under my Christmas tree!
