Senator's daughter is carjacked

mug.preston

Washington (CNN) - Sen. Bob Corker said Thursday that his daughter is fine but "really sore" after being pulled from her car and thrown to the ground in a carjacking in the nation's capital Wednesday night.

The Tennessee Republican said his 22-year-old daughter, Julia, stopped the family's 2005 Chevy Tahoe not far from their apartment - just nine blocks from the U.S. Capitol building - to help someone she thought needed directions.

"A gentleman appeared, opened the door, grabbed her by the neck," the senator said. "She kicked to try to get away ... and he threw her on the pavement and drove away."

Corker credited the vehicle's OnStar system with helping to locate it, and the suspects were taken into custody a short time later in a parking lot in Seat Pleasant, Maryland.

"It's pretty incredible how quickly they were able to apprehend" the suspects, the senator said. The two people in the car were taken into custody by police in Seat Pleasant after OnStar determined their exact location and showed that the vehicle was not moving, Corker explained.

The Seat Pleasant authorities were notified by OnStar that the stolen car was in their jurisdiction, and were provided the description and tag number of the vehicle, Seat Pleasant Police Sgt. Leroy Patterson told CNN.

"The officers just searched and they saw a vehicle matching that description," Patterson said, adding that the two suspects were taken to a Maryland station to be interviewed by Metropolitan Police detectives. The Metropolitan department "will handle the actual charges, because the incident happened in Washington, D.C.," Patterson explained.

The senator praised the work of the Metropolitan Police the U.S. Capitol Police, the FBI and the Seat Pleasant Police.

He also admitted that he often thought about canceling the OnStar service subscription.

"I was telling the lady who handles that for me in Chattanooga, each month I was saying, 'I don't want to pay this, I don't want to pay this,'" Corker said, adding that it was a nominal fee.

But he kept the service, "thinking that maybe OnStar would be of some help" someday, Corker said.
"Certainly it paid off tremendously last night," he said.

  1. I am glad she got away only a little sore

How about cracking down on the nation's capital and the other city centers where crime is at high levels

The police are doing a good job, but I hear stories about shoot outs in the streets of Berkeley along the Oakland border and such

My thought is higher police presence

The senator's daughter got very lucky in many ways and that they caught them soon after... that just isn't so normal, but I am glad for her

    god bless

Politicians NEVER step and DEAL with REAL WORLD issues until it impacts their family. I'm glad to hear his daughter is fine, but this is a wake up call to politicians who continue to bury their heads in the sand when it comes to FIXING the legal system. It's seriously broken and desperately needs modification. Laws are outdated for today's criminals and needs to be adjusted as we move into the 21st Century.

Stricter LAWS, BETTER laws and appropriate LAWS need to be implemented, passed and adhere to. This is NOTHING new, anyone in DC or any other urban city KNOWS this reality.

Corker became a Senator by running that heinous ad against Rep. Ford suggesting he was 'commingling' with a blonde white woman. Sorry his daughter was attacked but every time I see him it invokes his destructive campaign. Tennessee should be ashamed to have such a representative. Had it voted for its native son we would have been spared the Bush II horrorcracy. This seems to be the only way Corker has been in the news, but being a mediocrity perhaps he represents his state well.

Welcome to the nation's capital. The crime rate, if not the highest in the nation, is among the highest in the nation.

If we are to believe the police, of course, they will say that crime is down.

On the other hand, if we evaluate the reports of crime in the media, we know that all police departments lie about the crime rates in their cities.

DC is the bluest area of the United States, this type of stuff is common when 97% of the population is liberal Democrat.

Since she is the daughter of a Republican, the comments about Palin's, Bush's and other republican's families leave no doubt that a majority of Democrats in this country are happy about this, only upset that she wan't hurt or harmed.

Certain crimes should carry the death sentence and this is one. When it is determine by the victim and any other witnesses that this crime was committed by the person, then they should forfiet their life in 3 days.

If she'd had a gun, she could have protected herself. D.C. has some of the most strict gun control laws and highest crime rates. Coincidence? Nope. It's so bad, several years ago their NBA team stopped using the "Bullets" name because it reflected on the horrible crime rates. Figure it out! Gun control only prevents law abiding citizens from protecting themselves. Criminals, by definition, don't follow the law and won't care if carrying/concealing a gun is illegal.

She rolled her window down? Is she an idiot? She was locked in and she practically gave them the car. Why didn't she just keep going? You don't stop when you are a woman alone at night on the road in DC. She was lucky not to be killed. Carjackings seem to be on the rise in this area. A driver was shot and one of the carjackers was also shot and killed by the shooter in DC a few days ago.

Hello!!!! do ya think putting more monies into the police depts across the nation instead of lowering it. Yes, they can't be everywhere. BUT,
maybe these creeps that are all over could of done this multiple times, been in jail multiple times for the same thing. instead of in and out withing a few hours or a couple weeks. How about 10 years or so. Maybe they might get the message. If not, catch them again and 20 years, 3rd time life w/o parole. Our laws need to get oh so tuff and maybe these social misfits will get the message that we are tired of all these criminals taking over all of us.

As a mother and grandmother, I really feel for the Senator, and pray that he and his daughter can, in time, put this behind them. We worry so about our kids, we just hate to let them out of sight. They can't even be safe in the nations capital. What a world we live in. This just proves that gated communities, wealth, and power do not protect you from a disintegrating society. Perhaps Mr. Corker will adopt a different outlook on his party's tax, health, and education policies which favour the rich and leave too many people without a future, many of whom then turn to crime. America has 5% of the world's population and 25% of the world's prisoners.

Why is this considered to be news worthy? Numerous car jacking and other more serious crimes are committed each day. Why do we need to pay more attention to this particular crime because the victim happens to be related to a US senator?

I'm glad the young lady is okay but i have to ask, if it was an ordinary citizen would the three agencies(especially) the FBI would have responded so quickly. We have carjackings in this country every minute and the Fbi don't get involved. Truely i understand the situation and again i'm glad she is okay but the answer stands.

    Thank You,

It is unfortunate that this kind of thing happened. It would be great if they around time for car jackings in D.C. could be this quick. It seems that just because it was a senator's daughter every law enforcement detail was put on alert. This type of response should be for all citizens of this country.

    December 3, 2009 04:24 pm at 4:24 pm |

The FBI was involved due the interstate nature of the crime, as the crime occured in DC and the suspects were caught in Maryland; not because the crime involved a Senator's daughter.

Hope you Libs can whip up some more ill sentiment at the misfortune of a Republican Senator's family. That makes you look absoulutely stellar.

If DC had gun laws more like Virginia, that young woman would've been able to defend herself instead of getting carjacked and roughed up like that. Unfortunately, DC's gun laws are too much like California's and New York City's laws, so this sort of carjacking happens on a regular basis here. That doesn't happen so much over in Virginia, where law-abiding citizens can actually defend themselves from such criminals.

While I'm sure everyone hopes his daugher is okay, Bob Corker is a first-class jerk. He slandered his opponent's race to get elected in 2006. For all of you rocket scientists that believe that this young lady would have been better off had she been armed, take this rare occasion to put on your thinking caps. Can you imagine what could have happened if she tried to pull out a gun on two men who were attempting to carjack her? Surely those of you who are in favor of guns have taken the time to educate yourselves on the stats as it pertains to gun owners. The fact is she has a far greater chance of getting injured or killed by her own gun if she had one during that incident. Let's work on using that organ between the ears a little more.

In Orlando we have similar violent crime problems.

    Lessons for us all:

    1. Never roll down window or open door to help people on street.

Great that the girl is okey-dokey, but come on, is this really news for the rest of us? A man in Albuquerque, New Mexico EXECUTES his 9 month old daughter due to a domestic problem, and not a whiff by mainstream media. I also agree with all those who say that for the average Joe, the F.B.I., and/or the rest of the Alphabet soup law enforcement, would have not even given a carjacking a passing interest. I am sure that the first call the Senator made, (before calling his own family) was to the FBI, and bingo-bango, his daughter's precious Tahoe is recovered. OnStar deserves the credit for a happy ending.
