Obama shifts schedule, will attend end of climate change summit

Washington (CNN) - In a change of plans, President Barack Obama will attend the end of an upcoming climate change summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, the White House said Friday.

"Based on his conversations with other leaders and the progress that has already been made to give momentum to negotiations, the president believes that continued U.S. leadership can be most productive through his participation at the end of the Copenhagen conference on December 18 rather than on December 9," said a statement from Obama's press secretary, Robert Gibbs.

"There are still outstanding issues that must be negotiated for an agreement to be reached, but this decision reflects the president's commitment to doing all that he can to pursue a positive outcome," the statement said.

Obama's initial plan to attend only the beginning of the conference was criticized by some, including the environmental activist group Greenpeace, which said it is more important that he be there at the end of the week.

"President Obama needs to be there at the same time as all the other world leaders –December 18," said Mike Townsley, a spokesman for Greenpeace. "This is when he is needed to get the right agreement."

The statement from Gibbs said the United States will have representation in Copenhagen from State Department and Cabinet officials throughout the negotiating process.

Obama has said he would be in Oslo, Norway, to accept his Nobel Peace Prize on December 10.

The White House statement said the president has discussed the status of climate change negotiations with the leaders of Germany, France, Britain and Australia.

"There appears to be an emerging consensus that a core element of the Copenhagen accord should be to mobilize $10 billion a year by 2012 to support adaptation and mitigation in developing countries, particularly the most vulnerable and least developed countries that could be destabilized by the impacts of climate change," it said.

The White House has said that Obama is prepared to set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 17 percent below 2005 levels over the next decade.

It has also reiterated Obama's goal of reducing U.S. emissions by 83 percent by 2050.

Think again – once again; an uneducated posting.....the earth's climate is cyclical....and if you'd bother reading the climate bill, it's chocked full of crap that has nothing to do with saving the's about lining the pockets of liberal cronies of Obama...gee...and all those emails that were buried, along with the dissenting data showing it was a farce...I guess that was Palin's fault, huh?

Mike in MN – you're right....he can't stand missing a photo op...did you catch the one of OBama stealing the glory from our dead soldiers coming home in their caskets?

Hilarious. Remember how the Left bashed Bush for politicizing science? Now we learn that the global warming numbers were fudged and conflicting data thrown out. Where is the Left's outrage at that? This is a s political as it gets, and it will cost us trillions if the sky is falling crowd get their legislation through.

"Gotta admit guys, the release of those 'Let's do some tricks with numbers since we aren't able to PROVE climate change' memo's make you feel a bit duped by people too set on proving something with the ACTUAL numbers."

Sorry but the use of the phrase 'trick' is in the context of extrapolating data. In fact there was a good example of the phrase used last night on a Nat Geo program about the asteroid that hit earth a year or so ago. They were having trouble calculating the orbit of the asteroid and the scientist said something along the lines of 'I used a trick to calculate the precise orbit.' Are you suggesting that he must have been falsifying data because he used a 'trick' to work it out?

"See, since they can't prove "global warming", they have to use the new catchphrase, "climate change".
Actually they started using climate change when idiots starting thinking that global warming just meant everywhere would get warmer, which it certainly does not suggest will happen. Climate change more accurately describes the situation. And that 'new' phrase has been around for quite some time.

  5. all the news that's fit to omit

So these genius scientists are on record saying that the numbers are lies, the science is BS, they talk about destroying data to make their case and also discuss how they want to squelch ANY dissension and you gutless liberals are hammering the people that are saying what the bleep is going on here?

Your hero cowards of the left, Al Bore cancelled his $1200 met and greet in Copenhage all of a sudden dues to an unforseen issue.

The issue sheep is ClimateGate and your hero would have finally been forced to answer question as HE NEVER HAS THE SEEDS to do so.

He ran like a coward, just like you bleating sheep that when the truth is in front of you ae blinded by stupidity.

Global warming used to be the myth, but then the numbers didn't ad up, so climate change was born for you fools to be brainwashed even more.

you climate change naysayers make me sick... your ignorance knows no bounds. The Earth's climate is changing at an alarming rate (and not for the better); you idiots keep on trying to blame Obama, Gore and others for trying to fix this mess we're in. In case you haven't noticed, the northern polar ice cap is melting, glaciers all over the world are disapearing and you people are still clinging to the idea that everything's just dandy... freaking morons!

"You guys need to go back to high school science 101 and study-up on how inter-related and dynamic the earth's climate is."

Maybe you could read us the part in your science book that tells us how to turn down the temperature of the sun.

That’s the problem with libs….they quit after high school.
