AFL-CIO expands health care reform effort

Washington (CNN) – The AFL-CIO is urging Congress to pass health care reform with a public option that doesn't tax workers' benefits, in a new television ad out this week.

The commercial features a montage of different workers pleading for health care reform, but emphasizing that they think it's "just wrong" to tax workers' benefits. In the ad, the workers claim if their health care is taxed, companies will cut benefits and they will have to pay more in the end.

The commercial first ran in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, but the union said it is spending an additional $1.5 million to expand its distribution to Virginia, Indiana and Delaware. It will run for two weeks.

  1. Amazing

Amazing that there has to be an ad for this. The fact that the Democrats are considering a tax for people who already have insurance to cover those without is insane. What is wrong with having those who need insurance pay for their own premiums.........oh that makes too much sense for the gimme crowd, nope they want those of us who actually pay taxes to pay more to cover the 47% of Americans who Pay NO income tax. Great incentive in this country to just quit working and get everything for free.

This time I am in favor of what the UNION is saying. This doesn't happen much.

There needs to be a more level playing field for HEALTHCARE in AMERICA.

Will they be for the health reform that is being debated if they are taxed more? Is not labor saying the same things that most all Americans are saying that this reform is too costly and don't tax us more. Why is this so difficult to understand?

Does the phrase "have their cake and eat it to" ring any bells? You can't have it both ways folks. You can't have the security of a socialist and the wealth of a capitalist. You have to give up one or the other. You have to take a side.

The union wants it all, UNTIL they have to pay for part of it. Typical.

I attended a continuing education seminar last week at which the former state insurance commissioner presented an analysis of the current legislation before congress regarding healthcare. I was not surprised to hear that my taxes will be going up to pay for it (as well as most of the middle class). I was surprised to hear it does nothing to control healthcare costs. Our congresspeople are shams and liars. All of them, of both parties, need to be voted out.

I don't care who they tax at this point, i'll be willing to chip in just to get this thing passed with the public option. I make leas then $40,000 a year and still willing to help my neighbor with health care. The selfish republicans and rich right wingers all they think about themselves. Making millions of dollars but not willing to put in 50 cents to pass healthcare reform. They make me so sick!!!

It makes no sense to tax one person’s health insurance benefits in order to pay for another’s. Unless, of course, the goal is to force everyone into the public option. We all know that's the way this thing is going. Real reform would never cost $849 billion, it would include TORT reform, it would include co-ops for small businesses, and it would allow for insurance to be purchased across state lines.

This is a liberal scam. Anyone who supports this bill is a sucker.

Of course the unions don't want THEIR benefit plans taxed. If the Obummie administration taxes other similarly situated medical plans and exempts the union bums, the civil war of the 1860's will be mild compared to what will happen. Obummie's special interest groups control the White House like no other White House has been controlled. .

The proposed 'reform' isn't working in MA, so why expand a similar version of the 'reform' to the rest of the USA. Obama, Pelosi and Reid are all duds.

Of all the useless, self-serving, hypocritical organisations in the country, the AFL-CIO just about tops the list (second, possibly, only to the Federal government itself..) It exists solely to reward and protect mediocrity.

If the AFL-CIO is for the public option, you just know it's bad not only for everyone in the country who's not in a union, but bad for the country itself as well.

So let's see, the union loons support the health care takeover, but only if it's members premium insurance plans aren't taxed?

After the unions combined to donate over 30 million bucks to the obama campaign they will probably get what they want, that's how it works in Chicago!

    One
    Big
    Awful
    Mistake
    America

Those labor unions are full of crap! Of course, they did lobby for the 8 hour day, the 40 hour week, overtime pay, sick leave, workplace safety regulations, equal pay for minorities, employer provided health insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, equal opportunity for minorities, equal pay for women, equal opportunity for women, maternity leave, paternity leave, family leave, paid vacations, and a bunch of other socialist crap that has crippled American industry.

And, come to think of it, they have lobbied against sexual harassment of women in the workplace – as if that ever happened! It is just another socialist lie.

And they have lobbied against the "glass ceiling." What a load of crap that is, right gals? Women have always been promoted the same way as men in America!

Now they're trying to mess up health care. They'll just never stop until all American workers have a good paying job with good benefits. Communists, every one of them!

Here it is America, plain and simple so many of you will understand. Too many Chiefs and not enough "tax paying" Indians. Of course in this day and time, I have to add there is no racially motivated connection for my use of the word Indian, or Native Americans as I am sure the ACLU would prefer me to use. Wonder how much they spent on running that ad, seems like they could buy a lot of healthcare coverage for that money, just saying...
