Illinois to get some Gitmo detainees, official says

Washington (CNN) - A limited number of detainees from the Guantanamo Bay prison will be transferred to a prison in Illinois, President Obama will announce Tuesday, a senior administration official said.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and Sen. Richard Durbin will go to the White House on Tuesday for a briefing on the plan to use Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Illinois, to help shut down the controversial facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Illinois state officials have said the plan would call for housing federal prisoners, including some detainees from the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in the largely vacant maximum-security facility in northern Illinois.

The governor and other officials have said such a deal could provide up to 2,000 jobs and up to $1 billion in federal money to the area.

Finally! This should be an economic boost to the state.

Just what the nation needs–more criminals, of the terrorist type, in a state fraught with them, chief of them being in the White House presently. Wonder how much Illinois paid to get these losers, and why do they have to come to America? They have been here once and killed over 3,000 people!

I've seen this prison – built but never occupied. It is state of the art and can hold anyone. I think it's a good idea to move them there and boost the economy of that area.

Good, close down Gitmo–it's a torture chamber anyway. Thanks to President Dick Cheney, and his sidekick George Bush.

Why? What's wrong with Gitmo (except it was started by the Bush administration)? Those are not American citizens and they were not caught on American soil, so why are they being brought here? This is truly stupid on the part of Obama and crew.

There is nothing good about having terrorists on U.S. soil.......ask yourself-what good can happen and what bad can happen....then decide....

How could a prison so close to chicago be "largely vacant" ? Seems like they could fill it up just with the crooked politicians from chicago, .

Over a billion dollars in additional debt to bring all the murdering terrorists into the heartland of America! That's what Obama's jobs program is all about. That's what Obama and the Democrats in Congress have accomplished after a year in total control of the Government. Wasting another billion, and billions more over the years to give murdering terrorists the Constitutional rights that most Americans can't even afford to really enjoy if they got caught jaywalking? Obama couldn't do this lone without the support of all the Democrats in Congress. Terrorists in the Heartland! Thank you Obama? Thank you Congress?

Good move for Illinois. The facility is safe and secure and will provide much needed jobs for many in this small town America. Close the Gitmo and bring all the jobs home!

  13. Dominican Mama 4 Obama (the real one)

Pres. Obama is delivering on another one of his campaign promises. Myy fellow New Yorkers, it saddens me to say, punked up and passed on the opportunity to house the detainees in a New York prison. I am almost certain that his decision to place them in a jail in his "home" state of Illinois is his way of saying: If I'm willing to place them in my state this should be a testament to the confidence I have in my decision. Now there will be those that upon seeing the revenue that they've passed up in NOT taking int he detainees will accuse Obama of being a Chicago thug and giving Illinois the financial boost. You can't please ANYBODY it seems if you're the current President of these "United" States.

The military does a great job, but this time they were given a job that had poor instructions. Given the symbol that GITMO has become because of the previous administration, there is no reason that we should tarnish the military with this problem. I feel that their good name will be distored because of this which wasn't their fault.

Can't wait to hear the responses from the right. They claim how mighty America is in one breath, then cower under their beds at the thought of these bad men being housed in a maximum security prison on US soil. The right is all about fear, hate, and inactivity on issues that help Americans. They are really the ones we should be talking about sending to prison.

This is great news for Illinois! They have a vacant, money-sucking, facility right now. They will now get great revenue and jobs in an area that needs the help. The federal prison system is safe, and the fine men and women who have kept us safe from very dangerous people, including terrorists, will continue to do so.

  18. Gotta love the Dumb-o-CRAPS

Wow, let's bring the terrorists WHO KILLED AMERICANS onto American soil to keep them safe. Let's give them the rights they denied all their victems. What ever happened to keeping America safe? It matters more what the terrorists think than what real people think. Way to help make us safe DUMBOCRAPS!!

There! That's the jobs Obama has been speaking of! All in his home state, all funded by the government (i.e., meaning we're paying the salaries)...all "customers," are terrorists, who have now been given rights as Americans; just the like ones they murdered! Aren't Holder and Obama great? Isn't this just Hope and Change leaping forward at an exponential rate? What's next? Building them a Mosque, and ensuring there are no pig farms within smelling distance?

How about Illinois throwing out their representatives..... all of them.... to include their idiot Governor....the idiot Blagovich replacement ..... and start over....the state is bankrupt..... they will now have a bulls eye on their backs from every homegrown and foreign Islamic Terrorist in the world. One innocent citizen that is harmed or dies after these obvious reasons not to put them on US soil...this administration and party is OVER.

Now they can learn what real terror is when they are raped in a good old American prison! I think they will soon realize that waterboarding is better than brutal sodomy!
