Washington (CNN) - Michelle Obama's stock is on the rise as more Americans approve of how she is handling her role as first lady now than they did 10 months ago, according to a new Marist College Poll.
The survey shows that 57 percent of registered voters approve of Obama's performance as first lady, up 7 points from a Marist poll conducted in March. Twenty-four percent said it has been fair, while 10 percent thought she is doing a poor job.
But Obama is not viewed as a transformative first lady. Only 37 percent said she has changed the role for the better, while 46 responded she has done nothing to change it. Another 10 percent said Obama has changed it for the worse, while 7 percent were unsure.
The poll of 858 registered voters was conducted on December 2, 3 and 7. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

I respect Michelle Obama some. Example, as in not using opulent wealth, will send a stronger message than gardens, nice words, and nice intentions. Get my drift? Too much Wealth is a dead giveaway that too many of these folks do not feel our pain!
She seems like a great lady. Too bad she can't stop her husband fighting meaningless wars thousands of miles away and get him to do the right thing and spend the money on health and infrastructure back home.
I think those pollsters are insane. She is NOT an elected official. What is this idiocy about "transformative first lady" and her "stocks"? This notion that somehow "first ladies" are supposed to be involved in the goverment is pretty insane. Barack and Michelle are a nice, loving couple, they have beautiful kids – leave them be at that!!
I am not an Obama fan, but what has she done to get 10% disapproval. I don’t agree with the policies from Obama but that is not the first lady's job. Her job is to support her husband. I am unhappy her husband's job performance, but would someone tell me what she has done wrong.
Michelle Obama for POTUS in 2016.
What possible reason is there to oppose this first lady? I'm curious if we were similarly evaluating Laura Bush at holiday time eight years ago. This looks like yet another opportunity to get shots in at the first lady – who has chosen some great causes to advocate for, and has otherwise focused on her family.
Maybe she should have her sights on Secretary of State if the Democrats get another administration in the next 40 years. I guess by today's standards she's qualified, huh?
There has never before been a First Lady that is so intent on maintaining her roots and supporting middle class America.
Her sincere desire to have the White House open to the public,
working for and with less fortunate children, complete support
and communication with the families of our fighting men and
women, etc far surpasses what is required of her.
She is a wonderful representative of and for the American people and
am very proud and thankful we have her.
Who cares, what does this have to do with news?
I love Michelle Obama, but this poll sounds like people are expecting her to be a Hillary Clinton. Clinton was an exceptional woman in her own right and went above and beyond her role as first lady. Not everyone should be expected to, or even wants to do that job. Especially a mother with young children. Michelle is doing fine and a poll shouldn't even be necessary.
Betcha the 10% who say she is doing a bad job are the same 10% that support the tea baggers and the radical religious right.
Betcha they would not approve of the First Lady or our President
regardless of the good they do or accomplishments made.
Mrs. Obama. First Lady of the United States.
These are courtesy names/titles as befit our First Lady, CNN. Please feel free to use them when referencing Michelle Obama AND her role as First Lady.
Otherwise, simply refer to her as *Michelle*. . . but do please leave the singular *Obama* . . . to President Obama.
Wow, good thing this poll was done, I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown not knowing current approval numbers for her. Phew, thanks CNN and Mairst, saved me big time!
I admire the First Lady Michelle Obama because she was already an accomplished woman before she became First Lady. She put her education first, marriage and then children. Both she and her husband are well spoken due to their high quality of education which we should all stress how important that is for all our children in todays world.
MO is the biggest spendthrift and most elitist of any US first lady. She plays while Rome burns–seems not to have a clue what the rest of the country is suffering...
Um...who cares?
I don't believe she has done anything showing her how proud she is of America, nor of the position she holds as First Lady. Often pictures (candid) show her with bored, unimpressed or bother.
My belief is she is not a positive influence for women, nor diplimatic persons, who have always looked to the American White House.
I am saddened by the things I see and hear.
Classy lady. Too bad so many people are blinded by the beam in their eye to not be able to see that.
She's cool, don't got nothing against her. And she is pretty popular among the public, she doesn't look like a standup and a show off, especially with the perception and categorization that ladies have nowadays. I ain't hating on the ladies but some do like to show off and show their pride and courage, ain't nothing wrong with that but is always been a perception problem.
She's cool, and is she "sexy?" Maybe a lil but she does keep her body well tuned, she is indeed smart.
You decide.
Don't think for a minute that Michelle is not chomping at the bit to get out there and make a real difference rather than doing the Mommy bit, planting gardens, and making small talk. She is every bit the formidible and capable person we saw on the way to the White House. Once Health-Care is approved I think she'll step out and really start swinging!
She is awesome, as is her husband. We have not had this classy a first lady since Jackie K. WE have not had this visionary of a president since FDR. AS his plans start to take effect and we continue to move out of the chasm dug by 8 years of conservatism more and more people will realize that the party of no has been lying all year long about what this presidnet and his party have been doing to heal our great nation. Michelle will continue to grow in popularity, and given her intelligence, education, and social conscience she could end up being on level with Eleanore Roosevelt in the pantheon of First Ladies.
All I can say is that for the first time in my adult life I am really proud of her.
Firstly Lady Michelle Obama Is A Fabulous Person. Once Again HypocriCNN Losing Its Journalistic Integrity By Doing Somebody Elses Bidding. Quoting And Representing Somebody Elses News Only Unimportant And Inferior You Feel That Your Polls Are.
Bet that 10% who think she has made the role worse are the same ones who think she has done a really awful job as first lady! Also bet they are the ones with the pointy little heads and tiny little brains to match!
Bias and hatred just can never get past its' own stated perspective, no matter how obvious the error!
She seems like a great role model to me; not only for African-Americans but for ANYone. That is what we need to aspire to. We need to get beyond race and look at people as human beings.
