Washington (CNN) - Michelle Obama's stock is on the rise as more Americans approve of how she is handling her role as first lady now than they did 10 months ago, according to a new Marist College Poll.

The survey shows that 57 percent of registered voters approve of Obama's performance as first lady, up 7 points from a Marist poll conducted in March. Twenty-four percent said it has been fair, while 10 percent thought she is doing a poor job.

But Obama is not viewed as a transformative first lady. Only 37 percent said she has changed the role for the better, while 46 responded she has done nothing to change it. Another 10 percent said Obama has changed it for the worse, while 7 percent were unsure.

The poll of 858 registered voters was conducted on December 2, 3 and 7. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

Those who "approve" of Mrs. Obama's "job" as first lady fail to recognize that she has saddled us with paying for a 22-member staff for HER. Compared to other recent first ladies with 1-3 staff members, this is DESPICABLE!! I strongly oppose the sense of "entitlement" both MO and BO have demonstrated since January.

I am very impressed by Mrs. Obama. She's stylish and accomplished (extremely intelligent, too), but she also seems like someone who is easy to know. What a terrific role model! The president lucked out to find her and have two terrific children.

I loved Hillary as First Lady, because I admired her determination and guts. And now I love Michelle Obama, too, because she is so firmly grounded in reality and tries to set a good example for women and mothers. If ever I grow up, I hope to be half the woman Mrs. Obama is.

I'd be curious to know how many people are paid to tend to her and her affairs. I saw some pretty scary numbers the other day; my comment was that she's supporting her husbands desire to create more jobs.

For once, we have a first lady who knows what it's like to shop for groceries on a budget. She will never forget her humble roots and shows real compassion for the "common working people" because that's how she grew up. There isn't a phoney bone in her body. Her brother is the basketball coach at Oregon State (go beavers!) and he's a great person as well.

Kudos to Mrs. Obama for being a exceptional first lady.

How does on measure 'change for a first lady'. I think each one brings a distinctive measure to the Presidency first wife status..and so far, Michele Obama has lived up to 'class' 'role modeling for family' and the 'balance for the hubby'. I give her high kudo's considering all that the family has had to endure this year.

And L. Bush blew it out of the park? Yea, right. At least we now know there is still a first ladyship. That last one was rarely seen and hid behind the bottle. She offered nothing to the national scene. NOTHING!!!

I think she is great, not just as First Lady but as an inspiration and role model to young women of any ethnicity. I know – I saw my daughter inspired by her and other accomplished women during the campaign. She is the right blend of a bake cookies – change diaper – play with kids mom while being a very smart and accomplished woman in her own right. And to all you sour pusses who will claim she is only an afiirmative action poster child – why dont you go kick someone's puppy or whatever you enjoy doing.

Polls are rarely an indicator of how most people feel about an issue. They do, however, give nitwits and nutjobs and opportunity to crawl out of the woodwork to vent their uninformed opinions instead of doing some critical thinking. Get over it, folks, the election is over and we now have a
First Lady we can believe in.

She tries to be to flashy for a First Lady and it can come off sloppy. She should tone down her wardrobe.

The 10 percent who disapprove would say "see! she can't swim" if they saw her walking on water.

First of all, she's doing an outstanding job in her role and creating her standard of the 21st century 1st Lady! She's sincere, smart, real and compliments her husband in every way possible! Keep up the good work First Lady Obama!
