First on the Ticker: DNC ad: GOP 'playing politics with our troops'

A new DNC ad accuses the GOP of playing politics with troop funding.

A new DNC ad accuses the GOP of playing politics with troop funding.

(CNN) - For years, Democrats who voted against President Bush's defense budgets had to contend with Republican ads that accused them of failing to support the troops. Now the Democratic National Committee is releasing a new ad hurling the same politically toxic charge at the GOP.

"How far are Republicans willing to go to protect the insurance industry and block health reform?" asks the narrator in the 30-second spot. "Far enough to deny funding and equipment for our troops in harm's way.

"Republicans are so desperate to block health reform and protect their special interest friends that they delayed funding for our men and women in uniform. Then they voted against it. Tell Republicans to stop playing politics with health care. And to stop playing politics with our troops."

An effort by Senate Republicans to filibuster the defense appropriations bill to stall action on President Obama's health care plan failed Friday, when three GOP senators - Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, and Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas - voted with Democrats to end debate and vote on the measure.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee immediately slammed Chuck Grassley, David Vitter and Richard Burr – all senators up for re-election in 2010 – over the vote, accusing the lawmaker of "put(ting) partisan politics above funding our troops…"

The new ad will run on cable nationally and in Washington, D.C. starting Monday.

Update: National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Brian Walsh said the ad showed Democrats were "desperate to shift attention away from the higher taxes and cuts to Medicare which fund their politically toxic health care bill."

"Poll after poll shows that the majority of American people not only don’t support it, but that they are prepared to hold the Democrats accountable for it in next year’s election," he said Friday. "However, if they are seriously seeking a debate over which party has been more committed to supporting our troops over the years, then by all means let’s have that debate.  We would welcome it.”

Most of these GOP people are draft dodgers or chicken hawks of the worst kind – they only support the troops when they can make a "profit".

Why do the GOP hold average Americans with such distain? Why don't conservative pundits live in middle America? The fly over section as they call it. Where do Rush, Beck, Hannity, etc live? Not in Kentucky, Indiana, or Nebraska. They all live in the "glamorous" parts of the US. New York, beachfront Florida, LA.

GOP is playing DIRTY and UGLY. They DO NOT CARE FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, only their crazy right wing agenda and deep pockets.
They are angry and arrogant crazies. LOSERS! Disgusting what their dirty politics continues to do this Nation. And what our President has to put up with.

Will anyone ever cooperate to seriously solve problems? Will our downfall be that we could never get beyond talking about our best dreams and intentionsso as to CREATE them? Will Capitalistic Predatory behavior "Win"? It sure appears to be so, but I refuse to give up hope that Peace Can and Will Prevail. This bickering is just like little kids on a playground! This Playground called Earth and our Outcomes are all tied together and the Consequences of Failure are Grave/s! When will these little children stop playing with our World and Grow UP? Thanks for reading. J 😮

    Good for the DNC.
Republican's have been getting a free pass on this stuff for too long. time to take it to them for their shallow, cynical politicking at a time when Americans need them to participate honorably in the legislative process for the citizenry, and the country.

This vote must not be forgotten. All republicans should be called
out on their actions to try and slow any process toward a vote on
the heath care bill and young people's future.

Just politics as usual. The Dems said they would be the party of inclusion and cooperation. So far they have tried to shove their policies down our throat and none have been bipartisan. I just love the biased ads of half truths that are convenient to their point of view. I just hope the American voters can see how they talk to us like we are idiots and can't see the truth.

Wouldn't it also be fair then, to say that Dems were playing party politics by putting troop funding in with a healthcare bill? They knew what a problem this would cause. You can be against one idea and support the other. It sounds to me like the Dems are just playing political games and wasting our time. Bring up a troop funding bill seperate from the health care issues and then see what happens.

As a goldstar widow, a 23 year vet and a mother of a son now serving in the footstep of his father and mother, please don't insult me with your petty ad about who is supporting the war with the issue of health care. This health care

Hey GOP! We'll trade you one Lieberman for a Collins, a Snowe and a Bailey. Our Lieberman is busted and doesn't seem to be working anymore (for the people).

I do find it interesting that the three Republicans to cross party lines are all Women. Women are generally the more caring of the two sexes. Perhaps the rest of your GOP hearts are three sizes too small.

The Whos in Who-ville are singing. How can that be? How can there be Who-Christmas without packages and healthcare and jobs! How can it be? Why it's Christmas. And the Whos down in who-ville have each other, that's why. And the party of Newt GingGrinch learned that day, that Christmas is more than GOP money can buy!

The upcoming FAILURE of the democratic party

to work for the American People

and instead satify the Insurance industry of Conneticut, AIG, and Goldman Sachs

is an indication that, although they have the majority, and a President

it is a useless, worthless answer for most Americans.

Democrats, your one and only concern for Health Care is

Core Regulation of the Insurance industry so that it serves the People 1st.

Obama,........ a shame that an historic presidency is revealing a ragtag joke of a party.

The democrats now resort to sophistry. How can you support legislation when most of it is being kept a secret not only from the republicans, most of the democrats, and the American people. What is the democrat leaders afraid of? How can they vote on something that is is not available for review? We got change all right, but nobody asked the question, "what do you mean by change?"

Let's face it, both parties play politics with troop funding, and both are complete hypocrites. Tying troop funding to unconnected political goals in order to make your political opponents look bad is the epitome of "playing politics with our troops." Both political parties are a disgrace and should be shredded to pieces.

These men are fighting for our country and the party of NO comes up with this; I do not believe a word that the GOP has to say for they are full of hate a bunch of rhetoric and are definitely sore losers to begin with. To take it out on the American people and our soldiers is a scenario that I thought I would never live to see. Everyday it is something new and despicable that comes from this party; just to destroy this administration and they should know this the American people. They lie and use scare tactics and anything else that they can come up with.
