MN GOP calls Franken-Lieberman incident an 'embarrassment'

Franken is taking heat for cutting off Lieberman.
Franken is taking heat for cutting off Lieberman.

(CNN) - The Minnesota Republican Party is calling out Sen. Al Franken's over his refusal to grant Sen. Joe Lieberman additional time to speak about the health care reform bill Thursday night.

"Al Franken's petty and petulant behavior on…the floor of the U.S. Senate is an embarrassment to our state," Party Chairman Tony Sutton said in a statement. "In just six months, Franken has established himself as the most uncivil and ineffective senator in Minnesota history."

The incident in question came Thursday evening, when Lieberman asked Franken, then presiding over the Senate, for an "additional moment" to conclude his remarks after the allotted 10 minutes had expired.

"In my capacity as the senator from Minnesota, I object," replied Franken, prompting a surprised Lieberman to ask "Really?"

Franken spokesman Jess McIntosh said Franken was merely following orders from his party's leaders, who asked that floor speeches be kept within their time limits to keep the debate moving.

The incident sparked a sharp rebuke from Sen. John McCain, who declared, "This is the first time I have ever seen a member denied an extra minute or two to finish his remarks."

Though the liberal Web site Thinkprogress reports McCain himself refused to grant senators additional time to speak in 2002 when the chamber was debating the Iraq War authorization.

Only Republicans would call following strict time rules "petty and petulant behavior" when it's enforced on them.

    Tony Baby,
If you had done YOUR job as Chairman of the "G nO P in Minn," you wouldn't have lost. Joe and Al have kissed and made up. It was no big deal to them; just another opportunity for the Right to cry foul. Why don't you just go away!

The 30+ republican senators who voted against Franken's bill to hold rapists who work for the government accountable, are the real embarrassment. Unlike the Minnesota GOP, Franken is extremely intelligent.

What a crock to have this pig in the Senate. Some scum-writer from SNL is now representing the people of MN? It's almost as embarrassing as the Three Stooges from CA. I'm from CA and and completely embarrassed by these sub-human women!

Frankin should shut his trap and it shows what type of leadership that would even let this low-life speak!!!

What has our nation come to with pond-scum oozing around the halls of the Senate!!!??? I'm sure our founding fathers are just squirming in their graves –

Frankin should apologize to Lieberman!!! But.... his LIBERAL ego won't let him!!!.. for some reason – liberals never do anything wrong.... HA HA HA HA......

Al Franken's days are numbered. He is a true embarrassment for Minnesota. Read the record of Tim Pawlenty. He is an excellent Governor and it's too bad he will not run again.

Go Al! Do the job! Lieberman's drone is more than anyone can stand. McCain no better. These guys are so isolated from the reality of what American's really want – they should step down.

Hmmm – I think Bachmann is the biggest brain-dead embarrassment to come out of Minnesota.

Way to go AL – a lot of us out here want Lieberman to shut up and go away. Keep up the good work fighting the OBSTRUCTIONISTS.

For the person who asked, "How long has AL Franken, been on the job?" in response to the quote, "He has established himself as the most uncivil senator in Minnesota History," Al has been Senator about 8 times as long as it took for the Nobel people to decide to give Obama his Peace Prize (11 days was enough time for that little award, why isn't 3 months long enough to establish that Franken is a goober?)

Who the hell cares what Liebermann thinks anyway. We know the insurance companies own him. He's just another windbag career politician that the citizens of Connecticut were stupid enough to vote for.

Franken is crook anyway, he fraudulently won his Senate seat....so it doesn't surprise me that he would pull a move like this.

Oh ya he's a dem. too, so that makes sense.
