Cheney named Conservative of the Year

Human Events has named Cheney Conservative of the Year.
Human Events has named Cheney Conservative of the Year.

(CNN) - He may have exited the national stage nearly one year ago, but former Vice President Dick Cheney has been named "Conservative of the Year" by the conservative Human Events magazine for his ardent and continuous criticisms of the Obama administration's national security policies.

"What Cheney is saying, primarily on foreign policy, defense and anti-terrorism, makes sense to more and more American citizens growing increasingly worried by the Obama Administration's insouciance when U.S. national interests are threatened, both at home and abroad," former U.N. ambassador John Bolton writes for the magazine.

"Since the only real, long-term way to deal with persuasive positions on substantive policy matters is to refute them with sounder policy arguments, it is not hard to understand why the Obama White House is near panic," Bolton also writes. "Where are they going to go to find a better policy inside his administration?"

In a series of interviews and speeches over the last year, Cheney declared President Obama had put the country's security at an elevated level of risk as a result of a string of national security decisions that largely went at odds with Bush administration practices.

Cheney's comments have met criticism from many Democrats and some members of the media who say he would be better off following the example set by former President George Bush, who has remained largely silent on the actions of his successor.

But in the Human Events article, Bolton said its necessary former leaders continue to defend their policies.

"Most people have scratched their heads at this criticism, which is what passes for devastating analysis by the media, because it is entirely natural for a senior public official to explain and defend his policies once he leaves office," Bolton writes. "In fact, it is critical that men and women who have served in high positions, as Cheney has, to do just that, to give our citizens a better understanding of what actually goes on in high-level decision making."

"Cheney's quiet, inner-directed motivation is simply impervious to the attacks orchestrated against him by the Chicago machine-style politicians at the White House, a fact also plainly visible to his fellow citizens," Bolton adds. "And it is yet another important reason to have confidence that Cheney's solid policy analysis will yet prevail in the national political arena. Of course he is the conservative of the year!"

This 'recognition' reminds me that I think it is time that the media should substitute 'Right Wing' for 'Conservative' because the 'conservatives' of 2009 have twisted that once honorable word into something that true conservatives of past decades would be horrified to see. As John Dean has suggested, Barry Goldwater, who because he truly believed in individual freedom was pro-choice and pro-gay rights, would be in wide disagreement with these modern 'conservatives.' What we have today is an ugly mix of religious right extremists determined to legislate their religious beliefs for all of us to follow, neocons who want to use Amercan blood to reshape the world in the form they believe it should be, and economic royalists whose practical goal seems to be to make the rich richer on the backs of everyone else. All of this isn't conservative ... it is Right Wing. And Cheney is definitely a poster boy for the Right Wing.

If "conservative" means putting, at any and all costs, right-wing partisan interests ahead of those of the nation as a whole, and if it means relentless, meanspirited and fundamentally dishonest condemnation of even the most mundane actions of the opposing party's officials, then, yes, Cheney is "conservative of the year."

Honorable mention, of course, to Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Sarah Palin, and pretty much every Republican in Congress....

The statement in this selection may not be what was intended - when a war criminal is chosen as "Conservative of the Year," what does this say about the state of conservatism in this country? If conservatives wish to be taken seriously again in this country, they need to distance themselves from Cheney and his ilk, including Fox News, Sarah Palin, and the like.

"...former Vice President Dick Cheney has been named "Conservative of the Year" by the conservative Human Events magazine for his ardent and continuous criticisms of the Obama administration's national security policies."

So this is all it takes to be conservative of the year, huh? No action required, just whine and moan the most about the opposition. Why am I not surprised?

As far as national security is concerned, Obama has gone nearly a year after taking office without a major terrorist incident on U.S. soil. Bush/Cheney couldn't even make it 9 months after taking power before thousands of U.S. citizens were killed. Who's better on national security???

that's funny.. this is the same dick cheney who was vice president of the united states during the terror attacks of 9/11.. the idea that his policies on terrorism keep us safe has already been proven to be false.. this is why those far-right, borderline nazi conservatives are constantly becoming a smaller minority in the US.. the absurdity of their positions is so obvious to the average, contemplative american, that it scares us to think of these people back in power..

    I'm back, and I'm flabbergasted.

. "Where are they going to go to find a better policy inside his administration?"

Let me answer that: shoudl the need arise for the WH to change course in it's foreign policy they'll be able to do so seamless from within the administration. This administration is NOT composed of YES MEN, it is composed of folks from across our political spectrum. Moreover, this administration DOES NOT turn a deaf ear to input. The current foreign policy is based on something compleletely foreign to Darth Vader: integrity. We will adhere to the same rules that we expect others in the international arena to follow. And we've always stated that we will do whatever is necessary to defend our country. We just won't be underhanded and illegal in our eforts to do so.

Mr. Cheney is a rarity in this day and age. A man who understands the world situation in regards to the dangers confronting America and who understands that the present administration is clueless to the threat. The Obama approach is to apologize to every terrorist nation out there and believe that they've made friends of people that only want to kill us. Since freedom of speech hasn't been outlawed, at least yet, Mr. Cheney should continue to voice his opinion.

Dick and John should have been born 80 years earlier, perhaps near Austria, Germany. They might have met up with some equally demented people in the early 1930's that believed war, torture and any means to justify the ends was an acceptable policy.

Dick Cheney should be recognized for his contribution to the destruction of the planet, the demise of our economy, the total devestation of our liberties, for being a war monger, and
a universally-recognized evil entity. It figures that these "attributes" would make the Republicans want to idolize him.. BTW, the reddest state in the Union, Utah, has the most polluted air in the Union (today we can't even go outside), but by george, we are going to bring that depleted unranium here AND now we are firing up a huge coal burning plant. THe only good thing is that between the three pollutants the population here should plummet soon. This is what the Republicans want to do to the entire country. God, you Republicans are stupid!

If being conservative of the year means outing CIA agents whose husbands don't support your bogus evidence of weapons of mass destruction, if being conservative of the year means violating the very principles that you stand for as well as national and international law (torture), if being conservative of the year means giving under the table business contracts to your friends and benefactors, then conservatives are in real trouble.

How did we fall so far from conservatives with common decency (Reagan, Bush I) to embracing treason, dishonesty and torture as core values?

He was responsible for a failed foreign policy that invaded a sovereign country that was not involved with 9/11 and caused the death of over 4000 American servicemen and women. This invasion was based on a lie and it has caused his own country to fall. We have spent over a trillion dollars and counting, and what do we have to show for it??? Bush administration policies are responsible for many more deaths than the 9/11 terrorists. When are conservatives going to get this?? When you promote a lie that causes your own country to fall that is the definition of being a traitor. The world that Cheney fantasizes about doesn't exist. Nor will it ever. His policy

This Dick has had his day. Go lay down and rest your neck. His analysis was wrong while he were in office and he is still off. The more This Dick talks the more I search for ways to ensure democrats stay in office. Everytime he opens his mouth, it reminds me that no matter what the democrats do, they still didn't send 4,000+ troops to their death, and lie to (and hide from) the American public the truth about it. This Dick cannot be trusted to tell the truth.

Yes, Cheny makes a cartoonish figure for the liberal media to hound, wronly convincing many Americans that he is an idiot. Actually, he is well-informed, well-spoken, patriotic, and unafraid. I notiuce not one liuberal ever offers to debate him on what waterboarding only three people provided in life-saving intelligence, how Guantanomo served as an excellent location for dangerous war criminals, why the Constitution was written so as to provide military tribunals for enemy combatants instead of American jury trials, and why Americans (in spite of faults that all people have) need not apologize for our past militarily or mroally to a world that longs to live here on our shores!

One question to Mr. Cheney - if he also feels deserving of this award might he not stop exercising executive privilege over the release of nearly all of his conversations and notes about what he had done for national security? Further, might he comment on how the overspending of a war in Iraq, one that was done with flimsy and fabricated evidence, put the country at huge risk financially by costing it over 1 trillion dollars in debt?

His pontification from the side line seems to want to counter a different direction for the country. I am not sure it has much merit.

To be named Conservative of the Year, all you have to do is be a No-man obstructionist with no ideas? Cheney and Bush essentially flushed the US down the toilet for 8 years, but now Cheney has all the answers. It doesn't surprise me. He ducked Viet Nam with every deferment in the book, and then he criticizes John Kerry's military record. Everywhere he goes, nobody challenges his self-serving statements or contrasts them against his actions when he was effectively the President.

Can someone tell me why anybody listens to this guy? If I had my way he'd be in The Hague on war crimes charges. At the very least, he should be imprisoned for treason for his part in the Libbygate national security scandal.

If Cheney represents the values of the conservative party, then it makes perfect sense that his policies over the last 8 years destroyed America's credit abroad, brought upon the worst financial crisis since the depression, the worst environmental policies, no wall street regulations and 2 endless wars.

How is Cheney's Iraq war, which has cost us 10 billion dollars a month, representative of conservative values? Arent conservatives supposed to be fiscally responsible? Elevated risk huh? Yet no such attack has happened (thank goodness) and one would think some attempt would have succeeded. A couple thwarted (hmmmmmmm you mean the Homeland Security team is still working??) but none have succeeded. But wait – there was that incident on 9/11 under Bush/Cheney!!!! You know the one where they ignored warnings from the CIA because .....well no one knows why (maybe because the warnings were from "Clinton" people?)....and no one knows why they are seen as saviors instead of incompetent bumblers who missed the warnings completely.

Wow, Cheney is “conservative of the year”? That’s too bad for the Republicans since Cheney, who resembles the Emperor from the Star Wars movies (including the crooked smile), represents everything despicable about the Republican party; selfish values that place money above people, hatred/intolerance towards minority groups, obstructionistic behavior, a complete lack of culpability for the problems created by the Bush/Cheney administration, etc. Every day I wake up I’m so thankful that we finally have an intelligent, forward thinking, president who doesn’t rely on magic and superstition to make important decisions.

In November 2007, five authors whose works have been published by Regnery filed a lawsuit against the company. Hey Lola,

If calling VP Cheney the president wasn't a typo, then what is it? Do you know something the rest of us don't. It's your duty as an American to warn your countrymen (remember Paul Revere). Here, I'll go first:

You won't believe it, but VP Joe Biden is truly in control of this administration, and even worse, he is nothing more than a lackey of the ultra secret Pentaverate. The Pentaverate is made up of the Queen of England, the Gettys, the Rothchilds, the Vatican, and Colonel Sanders (before he went toes up). They meet tri-annually at a secret country mansion in Colorado known as "The Meadows". I've said more than I should. The rest is up to you Lola. Godspeed.

    My apologies to Mike Myers.

Dick Cheney has done so much to hurt this Country. Americans gave him 8 years to boosty the economy, and find "weapons of mass destruction." He never did either. All he did was line his pockets by being part of Haliburton. Just like all of the other Corporate criminals in this country. Pay someone $7/hour and complain that higher taxes means they will not hire people. I got an idea, don't pay the Executives $4 mil a year. Cheney's name shouold be thought of when people think of the corruption in politics. All our country did while he was in office for 8 years was put america in debt, go from Afghanistan to Iraq, and be a part of the worst economic downturn in the history of the United States.

Say what you will about VP Cheney he never gave the murdering terrorists an inch and was determined they wouldn't hit the U.S. like they did on 9/11 every again. A far cry from what Obama is doing where the heroes that kept us safe after 9/11 are persecuted by his justice dept, Navy seals are subject to court martial because a murdering terrorist said they punched him, hundreds of millions of dollars are spent to give the planners of 9/11 Circus trials and a world stage in NYC, and billions are spent to bring the rest of them into the heartland of the U.S. to give them the Contitutional Rights and multi-million dollar defense attorney's. While I definitely believe Cheney wins "Neo-Conservative of the Decade" hands-down, I think he's not even eligible for consideration to be "Conservative of the Year" by any entity. Though he is master emeritus on fear-mongering and wedge-issue politics, I don't think he even comes close to meeting the criteria for "conservative" as the word is being used today. For example, Cheney is not anti-gay and certainly not anti-gay "enough" for today's "conservatives."

The very definition of "conservative" today is at question, and all factions of the "Tea Party" partisans seem to define themselves in this way, despite their amusingly bitter in-fighting. To them, "conservative" means deifying Sarah Palin, supporting birthers, protesting ad nauseum holding handwritten signs & speaking with stunningly bad grammar & spelling, parroting "entertainers" who equate communism wih Naziism with socialism with fascism with Marxism with terrorism with all who disagree with them on one or many topics, and condoning hate against gays & lesbians, immigrants (legal & illegal), non-whites/racial minorities, reproductive freedom, and all who are not evangelical/protestant Christians.

These are strong words from John Bolton for Dick Cheney whose only real combat experience was to shoot his hunting partner where the sun doesn't shine! Dick Cheney is what we real combat veterans call a "chicken hawk" who avoided the real war where American men and women put themselves in harm's way and many returned in wooden caskets. (Yes the same caskets that Bush did not want the public to see.)
Republicans and conservatives do not own combat service in defense of our country. On a flight across our great country, I sat next to Senator Daniel K Inouye from a flight from Washington DC to Los Angeles. I recognized him immediately, he had one arm missing which he lost in combat for which which he received a belated Medal of Honor. We had a great conversation which at the end I told him that I was proud of him and also that I was proud to be a disabled veteran who like him was a Democrat.

Dick Cheney is a coward, pure and simple. He is no patriot. His words ring hollow. He needs to shut up.

Bolton is dead wrong! What Cheney is saying DOES NOT "make sense to more and more American citizens growing increasingly worried...". I am part of a large number of americans do not believe that Cheney and Bush KNEW what national security meant in the first place. They clained they did, but if that was true, tell me – and many more americans – why our borders here at home are not secure, why the Taliban has a much larger area of control now after 8 years of Bush/Cheney policies, why Iran and North Korea have continued to do whatever they wanted to do... Cheney has been the biggest liar of all times and nothing he says can change the truth. The only "believers" in him are some republicans (not all).

"...insouciance". I had to look that one up, Mr Bolton. People who insist on using long, obscure words are usually making up for some personal shortcoming. Kind of like leaders who promote unjust wars to make up for their lack of service in the military.

This is what's going to kill the modern day GOP. They don't know the difference between a modern day NEOCON who believes in war, war, war, that deficits don't matter, corporate welfare is good, government should dictate that Jesus is an uber-capitalist, that civil liberties are an old fashion notion and an actual CONSERVATIVE who practices smaller government, balanced budgets, keeping the government out of religion/private lives of adults and stays out of the affairs of sovereign nations.

Cheney is a perfect choice for Conservative of the Year. He embodies the arrogance, incompetence and immorality of the contemporary conservative movement, a movement which would be vigorously denounced by Barry Goldwater because of its advocacy of government intrusion into and control of our lives.

I laugh at some of the comments that are dropped by the conservatives because, they truly believe what they are saying....That Cheney and Bush were some kind of dream team. They were more like Dumb and Dumber.....These two profitted from their positions during their 8 years in the White House from the blood of soldiers to secure OIL.

Cheney actually made more money than Bush did during their 8 year blunder of an administration. During this 8 year debacle the following occured: our education was and still is in disarray, NOTHING was done about health care, 911 happened on their watch, we sent troops to war into the wrong country (any WMD's found yet?), Katrina hit and they watched it like a TV program barely lifting a hand for 1 week. They never did catch Bin Laden, And our financial system collapsed. Heck, I'd say they did a real great job don't you???

Can't we just study the brain of a rethuglican. They obviously don't live in reality and I would like to see how big of a hole they have in their brains.

Reasons why Cheney is "conservative of the year:" Torture is okay if you name it differintly, its okay to borrow and spend money, its okay to spend money in foreign countries, its okay to give government contracts like candy, its okay to police the world, its okay to let terrorist attack our country, its okay to be a racist, its okay to have a dumb person to lead our country (sarah palin & Bush), its okay to take money from the poor and give it to the rich, its okay to have USA be a facist country.

Dick Cheney did more harm to this country then the terrorists ever could. He helped to make torture mainstream and convinced the people that it's ok for the government to spy on you without court supervision. He lied so he could start a war in Iraq and sold out US operatives to do it. Obama's gains in foreign policy have dis-proven the chicken hawks claim that might makes right and is the only way to deal with "evil doers".

Cheney presided over some of the biggest follies in American foreign policy history (war in Iraq and letting the worlds unity with American after 9-11 change to disdain).

Stop wasting money we don't have on the expansion of failing, unsustainable entitlements. Cheney has damaged this country and does'nt even know it. Simply because of his twisted ideology and thinking. The man over the years has become more and more lunatic and amazingly his right wing supporters are like zombies who see nothing wrong with his thinking which is completely against our constitution.
The right wing in Nazi Germany had the same thinking and they all became like zombies in agreeing and believing twisted ideology.
I once believed in Republican party as being moderate but they have lost the party to extreme fanatical right wing.

Because 5 years from now we will all be stupid enough to re-elect them yet again like we did for W's second term.
