House Dem to switch to Republican Party

Griffith is switching to the Republican Party.
Griffith is switching to the Republican Party.

Washington (CNN) - Sources confirm to CNN that Democratic Rep. Parker Griffith will announce Tuesday that he's switching parties and will run for re-election next year as a Republican.

The freshman lawmaker represents Alabama's 5th Congressional District. Griffith won his seat last year by 3 points over Republican Wayne Parker. But the district went for Republican John McCain over Barack Obama by 23 points in the presidential election.

The Republican source was familiar with the decision but didn't want to preempt the announcement later Tuesday. The story was first reported by Politico. A Democratic aide also tells CNN Griffith is holding a staff meeting Tuesday morning to inform his staff of his decision, and will make a formal announcement at 2 p.m. ET.

Griffith was one of 39 Democrats who voted against the party's health care reform bill last month. His is only one of three Democrats to have voted against the health care bill, the stimulus measure, and the cap-and-trade bill.

Griffith pledged in August he would vote against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as Speaker next session.

With Griffith's switch of parties, the Democrats will hold a 257-178 advantage in the House of Representatives.

Traitor? Maybe he's actually following through on his campaign promises that got him elected?

Or do you advocate voting for the party rather than the individual???

I'm willing to be that there are a couple more congressman in his position that will follow suit before the dem nosedive in 2010.

I'd expected him to do this. He probably won't be the last.

It's unrealistic to keep a majority that huge in America today, but if we lose more than five something is wrong.

The man has proven by his actions that he is a republican through and through. Cannot understand why he posed as a Democrat originally.
If he thinks switching is a step up, than he evidently supports a party of hypocrits, liers and big business. A party who has resorted to fearmongering, inciting hate, anger, with a priority of destroying our president regardless of the survial of us and our country.
He, like all republicans has forsaken the American people.

Most of america is having buyers remorse. This president is a trainwreck. Thanks to all the uninformed, youth, biased media, and brainwashed for elevating an inexperienced "fringe" candidate like Obama to president. WE will all pay for this awful policies for decades. He make Bush look like George Washington.

Republicans are irresponsible; the only thing they’ve done and EXCELLENT job at is obstructing and lying to the American people. They think that by publishing what deals were made with Independents and Conservative Democrats that it would cause shock and dismay with the public.

News flash! We know what is done and how it gets done. If the shoe were on the other foot, how many concessions would you make—better yet; media, please publish the “deals” that Republicans made to get bills passed that contributed to the destruction of our economy that they’re complaining about.

Republican Congressman and Senators; instead of asking where are the jobs and the constant complaint about this administration’s failure to produce all of the millions of jobs that were lost at once. The question should be– what the hell happened to all of the jobs?

Well, well, well... dDemocrats not running again, retiring, and now one even switches parties! Looks like the tsunami of 2010 has started VERY early!! I gues when he ran he didn't realize the Democrats were determined to run the country headlong into bankruptcy and socialism. Smart move buddy! Now if he can recruit some more of his buddies, we can toss Pelosi out on her butt BEFORE the 2010 elections! Now THAT would be a great "victory for the American people"!!!

What exactly does the right offer in terms of policy? Absolutely nothing. All they want to do is fund endless illegal wars, arm every man, woman, and child, and preach their "moral values" to the rest of us. The right-wing is EXACTLY the same as the Taliban, except they are already here on our soil. The right-wingers are the true terrorist threat to America.

If the Democratic Party insists on committing political suicide by ramming through health care "reform" against a majority of citizens who not only oppose it but oppose it vehemently and angrily, they can expect to leave behind a lot of Democrats averse to a Congress and an Administration that seem to have abandoned democratic principles in favour of tyranny.

Let him go if he Griffith do no have a Democratic heart he should go to
the Republican Party I hope he talks with Lieberman and convince him to switch to the Republican Party too.

We do not need people in our Party that are against solving our problems in this country. I guess that is a good news for the people that worked vey hard to elect President Obama for a change and slowly but sure we are going to the top of the mountain.

Lieberman hide himself as an independent but all we know he is playing the Republican game stop Obama a any cost, look at this guy he look liked like a little dog running behind Mc Cain to be pick as vice-oresident and betraying Al Gore that made the biggest mistake of his life to pick this guy as he running mate. What a disgrace!

Don't you just love how our politicians stick to their core values?

Knock your self out switching sides, Griffith. Can't imagine you were doing much good for the democratic party one way or another.
