The entire state of Michigan has 15% unemployment. Yeah, we are looking for help too! What is the big deal about Selma that the mayor has to figure on CNN headlines?

Uh, how about the residents of Selma solving their own problems rather than trying to leach off the rest of us?

Evans, you complaining to the wrong Head of State.

Try going to the governor and the Congressional members that turned down the "porkulus" package and ask for help! Remember states rights over Federal rights.

But wait, Riley, Sessions and Shelby are all cons which you folks duly elected. So now when unemployment is 20% blame them for not taking the Cobra and unemployment extensions, NOT President Obama, he has done all he can.

You asked for republiklan leadership now live with it and quit your b!t@hin'.

Michigan is doing bad because of the auto industry. The South as a region is doing bad because of the textile and manufacturing industries. There are no safeguards for either industry, and the Southern representatives in Congress are not paying attention to the costs that our industries have to pay to stay in business. Health care is a cost that hurts our businesses, and that is a primary reason a lot of companies outsource because that is a cost they do not have to pay in other countries. They are fighting health care reform like it would not be helpful to support it for the industries in the South. We could pay workers more here if we did not have that cost associated with running businesses here. I commend the mayor of Selma for staying positive that things will change, but it is time for the South to become a part of the US. We tend to act like we are against anything progressive that will help us, as well as, the rest of the country. We need to start being more diverse, and working with the other representatives to do things that will help us adjust to the changing economies of now and the future, not in the past.

Everybody needs help. Every state has problems. The people need to do those jobs that the illigal immigrants are doing today. Get rid of 12 million immigrants and the unemployment will be down to 4 %.
Simple solution/a no brainer, you need a businessman to figure that one out and not a politician.

As long as the Right-wingers control the state of AL, places like Selma will remain impoverished because any federal, state, or local help is funneled right into the pockets of the GOP, and not It's citizens. Selma is a microcosim for what "conservative" leadership gets you.

You are 100 % right. It is about time that these states wake up and realize who they are voting for. They wanted Republicans, so--

Everybody wants handouts! This has been the primary goal of Democrats to have as many people as possible dependent on Government in return for their lifetime votes.

Please don't wake the President from his ceremonial duties, twice a day on the teleprompter. He is so busy flying over us that he is now working too hard. He needs his rest, signing earmarks is hard work. Please do not wake up this President, he is busy with the celebs who built this country.

Selma is not the only place. Many towns - and families - are in crisis and need employment opportunities desperately. Meanwhile, they see no help coming.

Bail out Selma-play the race card and get taxpayer cash from Obama-millions, maybe even billions for the corrupt mayor and city council!! More community activist programs, more departments, committees and jobs for friends!!!!!

Mr. Evans is missing the point! Federal assistance is just a small band-aid for the bigger problem that afflicts the Nation. On behalf of globalization, American companies continue to outsource everything in exchange for cheap labor and remain competitive. Thus, it is not surprising that the unemployment rate continues to soar.

We should look at other third-world countries with the same or higher unemployment rates and draw our own conclusions.

Without the Party of NO, the south would still have slaves.

The Democrats are the biggest racists on this planet. Economic racists, color racists, education racists. They attempt to keep EVERYONE under the thumb/rule of the Government.

Look, if businesses do not want to move to your community, then there are REASONS why they don't. Get busy and fix them and stop expecting the federal government and your fellow taxpayers to save you.........and tell your residents to STOP VOTING FOR DEMOCRATS!!

Why would he think he is special at 20%, I say that is the true unemployment rate in America except for a very few locations like BFE North Dakota where populations are low and work is agriculture related. Wasn't Arnold the terminator brown nosing the Obamanator last week with A++ ratings on his disastorous Administration, do you think he needs a loan maybe???

How was your 2009 America? Unless you had a government job funded by tax dollars you been scratching to survive while these elitists in DC spend, spend and spend some more of your tax dollars. No matter what President Obama may do that is positive (entitlement for the few) he has created a debt that our Nation will NEVER be able to dig out of that will in turn drag us to a third world status and enslave our childrens children to debt...

Thanks to Obama and his totally corrupt administration, plus the merry, self-serving miscreants in Congress, none of which can quit spending money or demonstrate fiscal responsibility, the US is BANKRUPT!!!! They just keep piling on the debt, we dollar is a joke and there ARE NOT JOBS!!! Why should Selma AL get handouts....the only people getting handouts are governement employees (bonuses and raises) congress – raises and increase in staff spending, and billioins of dollars in earmarks. By the end of the Obama's term, the US will be a third world socialist state. God help us all.

TIME FOR TERM LIMITS. RE-ELECT NO ONE. IMPEACH OBAMA.

When everyone begins to beg and reach for a govt handout first, we'll be on track to full American transformation. I would think local issues would fall within the domain of the mayor, but I'm just sayin'.

So Selma's problems are because of the Right? What about Michigan, California, Oregon and New Mexico which are solidly left? Guess that does not fit the Cool Aid punch bowl. Look at the states with the lowerst unemployment and see what they are doing right and it is not looking to the Feds to bail them out.

The party of no is "prolife"- You might want to check a few facts before you keep spreading the lies of Obama and the Democratic party. Alabama recieved the FULL amount of the failed stimulus money that your master Obama alloted that state. The Alabama Congress voted to accept Cobra and unemployment extensions, which is a one time deal with the state MANDATED to keep the payments after the money runs out. Obama stated as fact that we had to have this stimulus bill in order to keep unemployment BELOW 8%. So now when unemployment is 20%, you can put the blame squarely where it belongs, on your master Obama and the lying liberal Democrats like yourself.

Any city with residents dumb enought to elect a democrat mayor DESERVES 20% unemployment. And there are MANY areas hurting right now. Why did CNN choose Selma?

(It's a rhetorical question of course. We all know why.) :-)
