Poll names Pelosi, congressional Republicans 'losers'

Pelosi has been named a 2009 loser in a new poll.

Pelosi has been named a 2009 loser in a new poll.

(CNN) - Americans don't believe House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or Congressional Republicans had a particularly good 2009: Both were labeled "losers" in a just-released Gallup poll.

According to the new poll, 50 percent of those surveyed thought Pelosi is among the "losers" of the year while 52 percent said the same for Republicans in Congress. Conversely, only 39 percent think Pelosi is a "winner" while 38 percent gave positive marks to GOP members of congress.

As for other political losers of the year, 61 percent identified South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson - who earned fame after his "You Lie!" outburst at President Obama - and 63 percent named South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, whose exploits with an Argentinean woman were well documented last summer.

But Americans thought the biggest political losers of 2009 were Tareq and Michaele Salahi, whose last name became a verb after the two crashed a White House State Dinner last month. Seventy percent of those surveyed said the Salahi's were losers while only 16 percent identified them as winners.

When it comes to the year's winners, Michelle Obama gets the highest marks with 73 percent of Americans giving the first lady high marks. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton comes in a close second with 70 percent of those surveyed giving her the thumbs up. Rounding out the list is President Obama with 58 percent, and newly confirmed Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor with 57 percent.

Americans were less decided on four other political figures of 2009: Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, radio talk-show host Glenn Beck, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. None received more than 50 percent as either a "winner" or a "loser." Palin came close though: 49 percent of those surveyed thought she was a loser; 46 percent said she was a winner.

The poll surveyed 1,025 Americans from December 11-13 and carries a sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Hopefully the Republicans can look at this and realize that they have to appeal to more people and not to just the rightwing crazies in their party. There is a lot of talk of Democrat's 2010 troubles. Oh really? Have people forgotten so quickly what we had with the Republicans in charge for most of the decade?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but how anyone could call Nancy Pelosi a loser is beyond me. She is supporting the President's agenda and is rounding up a bunch of - well, I won't try to select a word to describe the very diverse group of Democrats she has to try to cajole, dare I say coerce to do what is right for the country instead of themselves and their individual states. I do not know how she has done it, but I applaud her efforts. Without her, there would be no health care bill that has gone anywhere, and I am deeply grateful for all of her accomplishments this year, which are many. I find it interesting that Clinton who is very rarely seen now has moved up so much in the polls. When she was in the public eye every day her popularity was greatly diminished.

  3. Jobs for those who need them

We almost hired a Libertarian at work, but decided against it. He would have had to get a CDL from the state, would have had to drive on public roads and the interstate highways, make some deliveries to public schools and government agencies, and we would have had to pay him in Federal Reserve Notes. In addition, he would have had to get our form of government health care. All these things are against his beliefs.

President Obama once stated,"Elections have consequences!". So do the choices of the one party system on the Hill have consequences. The Republicans found out and now so will the Democrats. The American people , as politicians forget, have the power of the voting booth. There are those who better polish up their resumes. The Democrats can't continue after one year, to continue to blame the Republicans , they now must take ownership of their actions!

By the way 1,000 of the people surveyed were considered democrats and frequent readers of the Daily Kos. I think this survey forgot to mention that part.

Food for thought folks...Pelosi and her democrats have been in charge of congress and the budget since 2006, this mess we're in is has much their fault as any republicans, if not more so by having more crooks in their ranks.

There you have it, folks, the stupidity of the Democrat voter.

Republicans haven't been in power since 2006, yet these idiots still think that they are the cause for the nation's ills.

Congress as a whole is a loser. And the backwards-cap wearing, sport-loving, no-nothing individual voter is the biggest loser of them all.

Mooney, what story book are you getting your facts from? The poll, what poll? It looks like you just made stuff up and we're supposed to swallow this as fact? I dont think so.

Silly poll, although I agree that Pelosi is lame.

If the inefficient, tax-heavy healthcare takeover bill passes, then all Americans will be losers.

  12. If you want something ruined, put a republican in charge

When you look at how hard it was for Harry Reid to keep 58 democrats and two independents together on the health reform, Nancy really needs to be commended for keeping her 250 democrats in line.

Fox has always tried to discredit her leadership, because they fear her power.

Finally, recognition Pelosi earned and rightfully deserves.

I wasn't included in the Palin poll, so I'll add my vote to give her the 50% necessary to be labeled a loser.

Palin, Limbaugh and that nutcase Bachmann should all top the "loser" list. What in the world have any of this crackpots done to help our country? Nothing! As a matter of fact, their moronic behavior has probably drug us back a few decades.

What a stupid poll. Define winner. Define loser. The poll doesn't. The Democrats won elections, that makes them the winners and Republicans the losers.

How about a poll with unambiguous language like; who do you support, who do you like, approve – disapprove?

Are you just fishing to create a poll that makes the Democrats look good, or Republicans look bad?

The biggest loser of 2009 is the American public who is being stripped of our Constitutional rights more every day through gov't takeover and out of control spending.

We American citizens are the biggest losers – we voted in the big "O" and horse's ass Pelosi floated to the top.

Nancy is the number one loser. She only cares about her wishes and does not care about the people or what is best for them. She needs to be put out and I am a democrate. Bye self centered Nancy

Hey GOPers: Don't read too much into Americans' discontent with Pelosi. Just because a voter doesn't like the House speaker, it doesn't meant they are ready to jump on the GOP's sinking, stinking ship!

I wonder why the headline didn't say Congressional Republicans losers instead of Pelosi. This is proof that Cnn is a right leaning news organization.

Because leading the majority party to historic, landmark legislation makes you a loser? Whatever. I don't personally like her, but I don't see how Pelosi's 2009 makes her a loser in any way. Sounds like envy and jealousy of a powerful woman, to me.

Aw gee, and after Speaker Pelosi allocated that $30 million in the stimulus bill to save the salt water marsh white mouse and the $54 million no bid contract she just gave out to an unqualified firm to help move a wine country Chardonnay Marketing Train to San Francisco. Somehow, it just doe not seem fair.......
