Poll names Pelosi, congressional Republicans 'losers'

Pelosi has been named a 2009 loser in a new poll.

Pelosi has been named a 2009 loser in a new poll.

(CNN) - Americans don't believe House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or Congressional Republicans had a particularly good 2009: Both were labeled "losers" in a just-released Gallup poll.

According to the new poll, 50 percent of those surveyed thought Pelosi is among the "losers" of the year while 52 percent said the same for Republicans in Congress. Conversely, only 39 percent think Pelosi is a "winner" while 38 percent gave positive marks to GOP members of congress.

As for other political losers of the year, 61 percent identified South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson - who earned fame after his "You Lie!" outburst at President Obama - and 63 percent named South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, whose exploits with an Argentinean woman were well documented last summer.

But Americans thought the biggest political losers of 2009 were Tareq and Michaele Salahi, whose last name became a verb after the two crashed a White House State Dinner last month. Seventy percent of those surveyed said the Salahi's were losers while only 16 percent identified them as winners.

When it comes to the year's winners, Michelle Obama gets the highest marks with 73 percent of Americans giving the first lady high marks. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton comes in a close second with 70 percent of those surveyed giving her the thumbs up. Rounding out the list is President Obama with 58 percent, and newly confirmed Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor with 57 percent.

Americans were less decided on four other political figures of 2009: Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, radio talk-show host Glenn Beck, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. None received more than 50 percent as either a "winner" or a "loser." Palin came close though: 49 percent of those surveyed thought she was a loser; 46 percent said she was a winner.

The poll surveyed 1,025 Americans from December 11-13 and carries a sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

    I find it interesting..........

CNN does not mention that the poll did NOT ask whether those polled viewed Democrats in Congress as "winners/losers".

However, based on the poll results regarding Pelosi and Reid-–it is clearly obvious that those polled also view the Dems in Congress as losers-–but, of course, no mention of this by CNN.

This is another attempt at CNN to spin a poll to fit their agenda.

Again, as many of said...........We will how the majority in the country "really" feels in 10 months--during the 2010 elections!!!

can't argue with these findings, although I might have thoughtPalin would get a 80% loser rating, and Pelosi about 90% in the loser category. They apparently didn't have a question for the Congress as a whole..they should get about a 90% loser rating as well, and Obama should have about 60% loser.

Mmmm... So on the main CNN page it says: "Pelosi named 2009 'loser'" - yet if one reads the article, the political figures with a more "loser" rating were Joe Wilson, Mark Sanford, and the "Congressional Republicans." It would be best for CNN to title their articles to reflect the actual content.

  8. peter vaguely if any of this meant anything. If a poll were to be taken on "oxygen" at least 25% of those polled would be against it.

    As for me, I'm undecided.

It's all relative. Republicans might be labeled losers in 2009 but they'll be BIG winners in 2010...picking up gobs of seats in the 2010 elections.

I can understand a poll to indicate whether the American public approved of the job performance of elected officials...but really, "winners" and "losers"?

It's like going back to the 4th grade. What's next? Reid getting his lunch money stolen and Glenn Beck citing a conspiracy for not being invited to a Jonas Brother concert?

I find this article so laughable because not 3 weeks ago another so called gallup poll resulted that 57% of Americans felt that Barrack Obama's administration has done nothing while in office except make excuses for his failures all while blaming others for those failures. The poll also stated that the Democratic Party was voting on issues NOT supported by a majority of it's constituents.
Is CNN actually a news reporting media outlet or just another supporter of the Democratic Party & Barrack Obama? And regarding First Lady Michelle Obama, I always thought the duty of the 1st Lady was of a social reform position impacting the needs of those who have less and need assistance not just one of fashion & trend. The first family is a joke just like it's predecessor The Bush's. The only difference is Laura Bush was actually a phenominal first lady in every definition of the position.

I would like to know out of the 1,025 surveyed how many identified themselves as Democrat, Republican, or Independent. This is also an important piece of data that they always seem to leave out.

What's the point of this? The questions could all simply be "Are you a Democrat?" or "Are you a Republican?"

Nobody reads the questions. Nobody puts real thought into answers. This country is forever divided.

No you got it wrong again CNN, the American People are the losers, because the worhtless party of No, keeps voting for insurance companies and the wealthy, and you keep reporting stupid polls like this one. How insensitive can you be, millions without healthcare and you waste your time on this trivial nonsense. CNN, the Marie Antoniette of news. You should hire Sarah Palin, or has she already accepted a position with the National Enquirer?
