Poll names Pelosi, congressional Republicans 'losers'

Pelosi has been named a 2009 loser in a new poll.
Pelosi has been named a 2009 loser in a new poll.

(CNN) – Americans don't believe House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or Congressional Republicans had a particularly good 2009: Both were labeled "losers" in a just-released Gallup poll.

According to the new poll, 50 percent of those surveyed thought Pelosi is among the "losers" of the year while 52 percent said the same for Republicans in Congress. Conversely, only 39 percent think Pelosi is a "winner" while 38 percent gave positive marks to GOP members of congress.

As for other political losers of the year, 61 percent identified South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson - who earned fame after his "You Lie!" outburst at President Obama - and 63 percent named South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, whose exploits with an Argentinean woman were well documented last summer.

But Americans thought the biggest political losers of 2009 were Tareq and Michaele Salahi, whose last name became a verb after the two crashed a White House State Dinner last month. Seventy percent of those surveyed said the Salahi's were losers while only 16 percent identified them as winners.

When it comes to the year's winners, Michelle Obama gets the highest marks with 73 percent of Americans giving the first lady high marks. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton comes in a close second with 70 percent of those surveyed giving her the thumbs up. Rounding out the list is President Obama with 58 percent, and newly confirmed Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor with 57 percent.

Americans were less decided on four other political figures of 2009: Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, radio talk-show host Glenn Beck, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. None received more than 50 percent as either a "winner" or a "loser." Palin came close though: 49 percent of those surveyed thought she was a loser; 46 percent said she was a winner.

The poll surveyed 1,025 Americans from December 11-13 and carries a sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

  1. If you want something ruined, put a republican in charge

I was shocked to see that the person who worships the "Golden Calf" (Glenn Beck) is not as popular as President Obama. You would think his crying and lying would resonate with the intellectually challenged.

"38 percent gave positive marks to GOP members of congress."

38 percent approve of these habitual liars? What is my country coming to?

Thanks a lot, CNN, for ading to political divisiveness. Since when does "loser" qualify as a category? Life is too complicated to be reduced to perjoratives – though you get more response to your red meat baiting.

    Grow up.

No you got it wrong again CNN, the American People are the losers, because the worhtless party of No, keeps voting for insurance companies and the wealthy, and you keep reporting stupid polls like this one. How insensitive can you be, millions without healthcare and you waste your time on this trivial nonsense. CNN, the Marie Antoinette of news. You should hire Sarah Palin, or has she already accepted a position with the National Enquirer?

  5. Wrong!

The REAL losers are the American people who now have a straw man in the White House. And the REAL criminals responsible for that are George Soros and the liberal media who made that happen!

Really, these talking heads on the radio are now "political figures"?

I'd like to see them run for office and put their money where their big mouths are!!

So exactly who does this polling? I have never been asked. Is it just CNN followers? From what I hear in mainstream America, Nancy Pelosi's approval rating is probably around 5%

  10. Party Purity will never bring Political Power!

Ah the raw irony of it all, the cons call Pelosi a loser, but America thinks the republiklan cons are bigger losers than Pelosi!

This poll on top of the one that agreed Dems had better plans for America than the cons do.

Yeah, that sounds like a "landslide" in 2010 for Congressional cons.

Of course, this is a ploy by the Obama owned and state run MSM to disparage the good cons. Keep believin' that, please!

    Palin/Bachmann 2012!

Nancy Pelosi isn't a loser, she is totally LOST! I have never seen someone elected to such a high position wth no moral character. If she votes 'for' something, I pray that everyone else will vote against! She, and her constituents are a blackhole crushing America's future. Wake up folks!

Most of the world would agree that Sarah Palin is the biggest liar and loser of 2009 period. Pelosi could be second but Palin is number one in so many loser catagories that she most definetly takes the prize of overall loser of 2009.She crashed the world of intellegent people and was caught right away, and has been a loser and quitter ever since. Losers usually blame everyone but themselves and she again is number one at the blame game which is another in many reasons for her being the biggest loser in 2009. She is also the sorest loser of 2009

  15. CNN in the censoring buisness..shameful! He LIVES so ALL man can know peace and love!

This poll was definately skewed...or only taken in the halls of Congress and Senate......certainly not with those citizens 'at their kitchen tables'. You really need to hire Siena poll takers.

I think it is totally underestimated with the Republicans. Yes , they are the voice of oppostion..but with a purpose... of protecting the freedoms that were gifted to this country after much prayer and hard work. As for Joe Wilson...he was not a loser...he said what everyone was thinking...what made it look bad was 'where' he said it..not 'what' he said. Just sayin'

Ron Paul is a winner because he's been right on everything for the past 20 years. The federal reserve is the big loser here because they created the recession through conterfeiting

Where is Cheney? He spends the year attacking the President during a time of war to protect his own legacy. He cries that CIA memos should be released and when they are he shuts up because they illustrate his lies. Even his own boss refuses to defend him.

Pelosi? She is the dem republicans love to hate just as Delay was the republican the dems loved to hate. Wear the poll as a badge of honor Nancy because it shows you are driving the G.O.P. wingnuts and tea baggers nuts!!!!

Given the partisan nature of politics this poll is tainted and meaningless.

Pelosi's for sure a loser – that's hands down on both sides of the aisle. But for some of the others – you can't expect liberals to say anything with substance about non-liberals because it would only undermine their own way of thinking – Joe Wilson told the truth when he shouted "you lie" to Obama – because Obama did lie. You liberals need to read the health care bill – you also need to explain why you think it's fair to send americans to jail for not buying into health care but it's not okay to send illegals to jail for the same thing – The health care bill is the biggest hoodwink that the liberals will have done to this country and when Americans find out how much it's going to cost them – they'll be screaming how could we let this happen to us – easy – you've been hoodwinked -

The most telling thing in this article (and the link) is that Gallup, Inc. ommitted a collective rating of "Congressional Democrats." Without parity, this is just propoganda. The real story here is Gallup, Inc. has an obvious agenda – other than honest polling. I'll remember this next time someone quotes some "Gallup Poll."

  20. If you want something ruined, put a republican in charge

Joe Wilson and Mark Sanford continue to vie for the biggest loser title. 295 million Americans have to be glad these morons do not represent them in government. The way it looks, though, neither Joe nor Mark will be happy until they reach the 75% loser plateau.

How can Pelosi be considered a big political loser when she was able to get her House Dems. in line behing a HCR bill that includes a Public Option! Reid couldn't even get that!

    Shame on you CNN.com!!!
What a misleading headline. You try to paint Pelosi as the biggest loser and as one reads the article it notes that she was only 1point below Palin, while less of a "loser" than others.
If we cannot count on CNN for accuracy, where can we go for news!!!
WAKE UP AND HAVE MORE JOURNALISTIC APPEAL AND NOT BEND TO SENSATIONALISM. I will boycott your site for the remainder of the week...I think.
