Poll names Pelosi, congressional Republicans 'losers'

Pelosi has been named a 2009 loser in a new poll.
Pelosi has been named a 2009 loser in a new poll.

(CNN) – Americans don't believe House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or Congressional Republicans had a particularly good 2009: Both were labeled "losers" in a just-released Gallup poll.

According to the new poll, 50 percent of those surveyed thought Pelosi is among the "losers" of the year while 52 percent said the same for Republicans in Congress. Conversely, only 39 percent think Pelosi is a "winner" while 38 percent gave positive marks to GOP members of congress.

As for other political losers of the year, 61 percent identified South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson - who earned fame after his "You Lie!" outburst at President Obama - and 63 percent named South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, whose exploits with an Argentinean woman were well documented last summer.

But Americans thought the biggest political losers of 2009 were Tareq and Michaele Salahi, whose last name became a verb after the two crashed a White House State Dinner last month. Seventy percent of those surveyed said the Salahi's were losers while only 16 percent identified them as winners.

When it comes to the year's winners, Michelle Obama gets the highest marks with 73 percent of Americans giving the first lady high marks. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton comes in a close second with 70 percent of those surveyed giving her the thumbs up. Rounding out the list is President Obama with 58 percent, and newly confirmed Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor with 57 percent.

Americans were less decided on four other political figures of 2009: Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, radio talk-show host Glenn Beck, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. None received more than 50 percent as either a "winner" or a "loser." Palin came close though: 49 percent of those surveyed thought she was a loser; 46 percent said she was a winner.

The poll surveyed 1,025 Americans from December 11-13 and carries a sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

OMG. 46% thought Sarah Palin was a "winner"? Good grief. I don't even recognize the country I was raised in any more.

wow....1025 "Americans," polled....and the liberals that were posing as Americans said they hate republicans...big surprise. What is a surprise though, is the badmouthing of Pelosi by a CNN poll...now, that's news. Usually, she can't do now wrong, but since she's made such an ass of herself, Obama will distance himself from her, especially during the 2010 elections, and he will instruct CNN to do the same. It's amazing how CNN, or Keating Holland (who must be a flaming liberal right up Obama's backside) can only manage to poll ~1000 people...out of a country of millions. I guess it's hard to find liberals in a majority of conservatives. CNN – you really discredit yourself with repeated poll results of these charades provided by Holland. Besides being laden with misinformation about what the public wants, his statistics are skewed, and incomplete....drawing from such a small sample.

Proof that voting is not the best way to get at the truth. Love her or hate her, Nanci Pelosi can round up the votes in her caucus, without giving an inch on what she wants. Just like the Yankees, you may not like her, but she wins a lot of battles.

I do not get it really, loser on what and winner on what. Each individual was carrying a different type of work in the course of the year; or without work (in the case of Sarah Palin).

The losers are the American citizens who now only know what they are told by Liberal journalist. When interviewing leftist Liberal politicians they seem to be tip toeing through a cow pasture barefooted but don their combat boots when interviewing Conservatives.

Where in the world did you find your participators for this survey? There is no way that this survey is accurate by any stretch of the imagination. If you could find ten percent of people that like Pelosi, you would be lucky. And what about Michelle Obama~do they like her because she wears "fashionable clothes"~debatable. She does have a pretty smilie and two beautiful girls. Other than that what has she contributed to our nation~nothing. Her husband is absolutely destroying our wonderful America. The only thing he knows how to do is "organize corruption" and "redistribute wealth". When he gets through we will all be living in the ghetto.

I wonder what the democrats numbers were in general. I think its funny that as much as people dont like pelosi, she is still more popular than republicans. I predict things to go even worse for republicans as health care is passed and fades from veiw and the economy continues to improve. I have lost any remaining respect for them as they have tried to block every single piece legislation, weather or not they agree with it in principle because they believe it will get them re-elected.

A new Rasmussen Reports survey finds that 55% of Americans have at least a somewhat favorable opinion of Mrs. Obama. That's down 7 points, or 11%, since November's survey and it's her lowest approval level since holding the Bible for her Democratic husband, Barack, to take the oath of office on that cold D.C day back on Jan. 20.

Since 1000 people make up the majority of America am i right. Stop these polls that mean absolutely nothing except for a small portion of Americans opinion.

Sure would love to know who took this pole? I never saw it and I think that Nancy P is the biggest loser of all time. I do NOT think think Rep Joe Wilson was a loser at all, he simply told the truth. Obama is a lair but not one wants to hear the truth any more. All the Dems who voted and also used bribery to vote for the Health Care Reform are so crooked I do not know how any one can vote for them again. Wake up American Democrats, please start looking at what is happening to this country instead of 'doing for the party" and the hell with America.

What 3rd grade idiots did you poll? Pelosi couldn't have an approval rating higher than 20% unless the poll was taken in CA. To put the White House party crashers in this poll is idiotic. The loser there would be the Obummie administration not the party crashers. What's the attraction with M Obummie? These polls confirm my belief that Americans are getting dumber by the day.

Nancy Pelosi is the most influential woman in American politics and second in line of succession to the presidency. Also, she managed to deliver a health insurance reform draft with a public option intact.

    Yeah, what a loser.

Agree that Michelle Obama should be the big winner. She's done a great job settling in her family plus attending to her First Lady duties. Pres. Obama has done a great job as well. Palin ,Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity = major losers!!!!

I think Pelosi is a loser because she is a liberal democrat with socialist views.

As for the Republicans, if you did a poll of how many of the people who were polled are of the African American Culture, you will find that that number would be higher than 70%, which would explain the negative polling here. :) it's not very fair and balanced but then again we are talking about the liberal socialist media here..

Given the Republicans are mass murdering criminals who lie, cheat and steal their way into power, I'm surprised they didn't poll lower.

No one has asked these sleazebag politicians if they would trade their Cadillac heath care plans for the mess we are getting rammed down our throats now, or will get, when someone goes to the trouble of reading this one we are about to receive. Why in the hell are you CNN scared to ask the question? Your ratings will once again be off the bottom of the charts. Your presentation is the best but the content stinks.

Given Congress was already held in low regard last year, Pelosi's numbers are not that bad. However, I notice the % of people who think Obama is a loser was omitted. Given the humongous amount of popularity he had at the beginning of the year, Obama's 58% populariity in this poll would seem to me to make him the year's biggest loser.
Anyway, these types of polls are a popularity contest and American are prone to give all poliitcians negative marks. Michelle Obama doesn't do too much in public, hence her popularity.
