Cheney: Obama pretending we are not at war

Cheney is out with new criticisms of Obama.
Cheney is out with new criticisms of Obama.

(CNN) – In blistering new comments Wednesday, former Vice President Dick Cheney says President Obama's reaction to the botched terrorist attack on Christmas Day is proof the president "is trying to pretend we are not at war."

In his first statement since the Christmas Day terror attempt, Cheney hits Obama for what he describes as the president's "low key" response to the events last week, and criticizes the administration's broader approach to national security.

"He seems to think if he gives terrorists the rights of Americans, lets them lawyer up and reads them their Miranda rights, we won’t be at war," Cheney says. "He seems to think if we bring the mastermind of 9/11 to New York, give him a lawyer and trial in civilian court, we won’t be at war. He seems to think if he closes Guantanamo and releases the hard-core al Qaeda trained terrorists still there, we won’t be at war."

Cheney adds that Obama outwardly "pretends we aren't [at war]," and the former vice president repeats his months-long criticism that the new president has made America "less safe."

"Why doesn’t he want to admit we’re at war?" Cheney asks. "It doesn’t fit with the view of the world he brought with him to the Oval Office. It doesn’t fit with what seems to be the goal of his presidency – social transformation—the restructuring of American society."

Democrats note President Bush was not subjected to criticisms from either Democrats or the media when he waited six days to respond to Richard Reid's attempted shoe-bombing of an airline on December 22, 2001. Like Obama, Bush was on vacation when that botched terrorist attack occurred 8 years ago.

Statement from former Vice President Cheney 12/29/09:

As I’ve watched the events of the last few days it is clear once again that President Obama is trying to pretend we are not at war.

He seems to think if he has a low key response to an attempt to blow up an airliner and kill hundreds of people, we won’t be at war.

He seems to think if he gives terrorists the rights of Americans, lets them lawyer up and reads them their Miranda rights, we won’t be at war.

He seems to think if we bring the mastermind of 9/11 to New York, give him a lawyer and trial in civilian court, we won’t be at war.

He seems to think if he closes Guantanamo and releases the hard-core al Qaeda trained terrorists still there, we won’t be at war.

He seems to think if he gets rid of the words, “war on terror,” we won’t be at war. But we are at war and when President Obama pretends we aren’t, it makes us less safe.

Why doesn’t he want to admit we’re at war?

It doesn’t fit with the view of the world he brought with him to the Oval Office. It doesn’t fit with what seems to be the goal of his presidency – social transformation—the restructuring of American society.

President Obama’s first object and his highest responsibility must be to defend us against an enemy that knows we are at war.

Terrorism presents a big threat to our security and this is a fact. But does Dick think we "felt" safer in 2002 when we heard on the news every day that the "threat level was at OMG run"? When was the last time the wide eyed press office at the Homeland security office held a prime time news conference to warn that the sky was falling? Terrorism is a threat-but Dick and his chicken little friends should shut up and retire already.

Cheney, needs to let the President run the country, all he is doing is showing that he is a racist, no matter what President Obama does that man will complain about it.

The reason he was in a wheel chair at the Innaugural was because he didn't want to acknowledege the new President, you would think with all his money and health issues he would be a better person but once a racist always a racist. President can't do no worst than He and Bush did.

Cheney needs to get a life, he is no longer in charge of anything, he wishes he was still have prison touchered, that what red necks live for.He is praying that The President gets killed that would make his day.

Isn't this the same Dick Cheney under whose administration 3,000 Americans died while under his (Cheney-Bush) watch? No Americans have died under Obama's watch. None. Zero. And the Al Qaeda operative who helped to train this Nigerian in Yemen was someone who had persuaded the Cheney-Bush administration to release him from Guantanamo under the guise that he would work for his family's furniture business in Saudi Arabia. So Cheney dropped the ball that led to the terror attempt near Detroit. The good news is twofold: (1) the terror attempt failed; and (2) Cheney has as much standing in the U.S. government right now as Britney Spears. Plus, to Britney's credit, she has never shot her best friend in the face. Pay attention, Mr. Cheney, and try to learn something from the current administration which has replaced the amateurism of the Cheney-Bush administration with professionals.

How convenient that a man who spent his time in "the cave" during the Bush administration is suddenly out in the open speaking more frequently and doesn't get it. America doesn't buy into the whole fear factor regime and you were ousted as a party that destroyed the economy thrived on bully tactics and defied constitutional law committing treason! Shut up and go fishing, oops the citizens don't know how much tax payer money was spent on your helicopters and secret service Snake River jaunts do they! How appropriate that you fish the Snake River!
Lest we all forget your impeccable service record – oops again! COWARD!

Dick Cheney doesn't know what he's talking about. I've seen strong and swift action from President Obama and his administration every single day since the attempted airliner attack. Cheney wants everyone to believe that if our President doesn't speak like a Republican it means that we are in danger. The truth is that almost 3,000 people died during the 9-11 attack at which time Dick Cheney was our Vice President. The truth is he orchestrated a war in Iraq to take their oil and drained crucial resources from our military in Afghanistan who were trying to find and kill Bin Laden. The truth is, Dick Cheney only knows how to put our country in danger. Do not listen to him. Most importantly though, VOTE ALL REPUBLICANS OUT OF ALL OFFICES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!! ALL THEY KNOW HOW TO DO IS START MORE WARS, NEVER ENDING THEM!!!!!!

never mind that the Draft Dodger in Chief had nothing to say when the terrorists flew a pair of heavies into the World Trade Center.

Strange how criticism is invoked after the fact. If everything was going fine I doubt that any praise would be forthcoming.

The President of the USA should have Cheney arrested and held for sedation, among other things.

Hold him in prision for a long long time.

The President of the USA should insist that Cheney be arrested.

Cheney is outright wrong.. He's simply beating about the bush !
He is now feeling the pinch as his coffers are dry and he does not
get any lucarative contracts for war supplies to Iraq or Afganistan.
He made millions illegally under Bush. He should now shut up
and hide behind his ill gotten wealth.

Obama's doing a good job... Keep it up Barak !!! Next X'mas go
to Kisumu for Holidays instead of Hawaii.

This idiot has talked more in the last 6 months then he did his entire 8 years in office.

Does he really think the American people want to be coached in the art of screwing up the country like he did?

Why do we keep giving this guy press? He needs to shut the hell up because he is the one who got us into this BOGUS, pseudo-war for reasons other than the ones given.

Mr Chaney needs to tread softly here. Seems the "underwear bomber" guy has been linked to an Al Queda operative the Bush administration saw fit to release a couple of years ago. 2 things: 1. the former administration needs to own up to its part in this fiasco, and 2. the nickname," underwear bomber" is just too funny.

You want so badly for Obama to fail you represent the worst in this country. Isn't there an island somewhere for washed up GOP'ers?

I believe Dick Cheney is ANTI – AMERICAN.... either he should support the president and commander in chief in a time of war or he shoud keep his mouth shut.....the only people he helps are the terrorists. Perhaps he needs to learn he is an AMERICAN first
    and a REPUBLICAN second.

Dick Cheney sat on the sidelines in hiding the last eight years, making millions on help starting a war and having his former company rebuild. Why don't he go back in the cave he was in the last eight years or better yet go hunting.

Mr. Cheney would certainly know a lot about war, since he was part of the Regime that launched an illicit war in his despicable occupancy of Washington, D.C.

When one is a criminal, one tends to know much about crime. This is the portrait of Mr. Cheney. Absent ethics, and full of ego, Mr. Cheney would be expected to do nothing less than act on his diarrhea of the mouth.

Mr. Cheney is a stereotype of the prevailing Republican Party today. They are so overwhelmed by rage at the idea a black man was elected President of the United States, their racism so overpowering, they are focused on nothing but "screw the people, we're getting revenge!"

As I've said in many posts, I believe the is a special place in Hell being prepared for Messrs. Cheney and Bush!

For goodness sake Cheney, 9/11 happened under your watch as the result of numerous security failures and ignored briefings... we have lost over 4,000 troops fighting the wrong war in Iraq and guaranteed future terrorism through that agenda driven farce. Over 100,000 Iraqis have died needlessly, we are mired in Afghanistan as you chose to merely dip a tow in the water there. You are in no position to lecture ANYBODY about how to run this country – as a citizen I am thrilled not to be paying $5 for gas anymore and seeing a rollback of your credit card legislation. Go count your money and disappear please... thanks.

Why doesn't Cheney crawl back under the rock he cowers under? Seems to me that Obama is VERY aware we're at war! Didn't he just add troops to Afghanistan? Didn't he get criticized by Cheney and others when he hinted that parts of Pakistan might be a target? Obama is one of the most brilliant Pres. we've ever had – I seriously doubt he is minimizing the danger to America. One thing we've seen throughout this years is that he doesn't always publicize his stealthy ventures! If he DID, then Cheney would renew his past criticism that Obama is revealing too much to our enemies and making America less safe! The man lost, is bitter, and needs to just go away! He is completely irrelevant!!!
