Brennan: Cheney wrong to criticize Obama

Washington (CNN) - Former Vice President Dick Cheney either "willfully mischaracterized" President Barack Obama's terrorism policies or is "ignorant of the facts," Obama's anti-terrorism czar said Sunday.

In comments on "FOX News Sunday" and NBC's "Meet the Press," John Brennan - the deputy national security adviser who is Obama's assistant on homeland security and counterterrorism - said partisan sniping diverts attention from the terrorists trying to harm the country.

Last week, Cheney said Obama had made the nation less safe by pretending there was no war against terrorists. Cheney, who spoke after the failed Christmas Day terrorist bombing of a U.S. airliner, was a main driver of the previous administration's controversial anti-terrorism policies.

Obama has ended or scaled back some of those policies, and Brennan said Sunday that critics were wrong to question the president's resolve.

"It's disappointing to me that either the vice president and others have willfully mischaracterized President Obama's position and actions, or they're just ignorant of the facts," Brennan said on the FOX program.

A former CIA agent who has served five administrations, Brennan said Obama's commitment to national security and fighting terrorism matched any other leader he has known.

Brennan said the unwarranted criticism "made people lose sight of who the real enemy is here."

"Al Qaeda has been responsible for the deaths of many, many Americans," Brennan said. "At this time right now, after this failed attempt, I think what we have to do is to think back after 9/11 when this country came together, when Democrat and Republican said, 'We have to make sure that we are able to stop al Qaeda from carrying out its acts of terrorism and trying to murder innocent civilians.' "

Dick Cheney should be tried for war crimes and if found guilty he should be put in jail for life.

Cheney being wrong is not news. If he had been right, that would be a story.

Cheneys not only wrong to criticize the President (it's a shameless display of a lack of professionalism and decorum), but his statements weren't factually accurate – but then again, when has factual accuracy meant a think to Dick Cheney, it's not exactly his strong suit.

The guy Brennan – adviser to the president on security was very arrogant and dodging questions as if nothing critical has happened on dec.25th 2009.

He was not taking any responsibility for the failure of the system and he looks like he feels everything is ok on security – he does not seem to understand one life lost is one too many.

He should be immediately sacked and shown the door never to return to his position in W.H..

Brennan echoes a problem with this administration when he says that it is wrong to question this president. With the mistakes made by this administration with almost every decision they should not only be questioned but held accountable for their dangerous moves.
Whether inexperienced or plain incompentence they are costing the America people not only trillions of dollars but hunhreds of lives.
The time for CHANGE has arrived!

Cheney forgets the Shoe Bomber was tried in Federal Court. Cheney forgets that it took Dubya SIX days to respond to the Shoe Bomber.

WHEN IS THE MEDIA GOING TO START GIVING THE WHOLE STORY? A SIMPLE GOOGLE WOULD HELP.

It has been very obvious to me Dick Cheney and the Republican Party don't care about doing whats right for this country. Since they lost the White House there has not been one single isse , be it the economy, health care, unemployment and most resently our war on terrorism. You name it. They are more concerned with trying to make the Precident look bad than doing what's in the best interest of the country.

They would rather see the President fail even if it means the country suffers. Let us not forget how happy they were when the Olympics was awarded to Rio ad not the state of Chicago.

America do not be fooled, we must be smarter than this. They want to divert your attention away from their policies over the previous eight years of the Bush Administration, which got us into this mess. History will not be kind to them but in the mean time we must not allow them to continue to manipulate the truth. The best message from us them is continue to vote them out office. Afterall they're not doing the job this country needs right now.

"John Brennan – the deputy national security adviser who is Obama's assistant on homeland security and counterterrorism – said partisan sniping diverts attention from the terrorists trying to harm the country." – Ironic, isn't it, that's all the Dems did while Bush and Cheney were fighting terror but now that Obama is President all criticism must stop.

This really shouldn't even be a story since everyone with half a brain knows that Dick Cheney is nothing more than a bitter old ignorant piece of S**t. I'm hoping him and Limbaugh take a car ride together off a cliff.

Brennan, you are being too polite: Dick knew exactly what he was doing when he criticized President Obama and his policies.

Dick is the epitome of the hypocrisy of the GOP: Whatever happened, Dick, to the idea that not supporting our president aids and abets the enemy?

Whatever happened, Dick, to the idea of putting the country ahead of political gain?

I'll tell you what happened: The Republicans LOST in November 2008 and they can't get over it! All they want is power so they can complete the dismantling of the American Middle Class for the sake of the wealthy and the likes of Blackwater, Haliburton and all the other profiteers of the two wars Dick and Georgie started.

GOP = Despicable, unpatriotic, arrogant, jerks

Hey Brennan, were you as disappointed when Obama mischaracterized and lied about the Bush administration, and politicised the deaths of 3000 Americans in order to get elected? Didn't think so, hyprocritic liar. Brennan is nothing more than another incompetent bufoon making excuses for this sham of a man that we call President Obama.

Mr. Brennan does sound a bit defensive. The truth is Mr. Obama has too many irons on the fire, perhaps out of necessity. Mr. Obama does need to appoint strong leaders who will be proactive in thinking ahead of Al-Queada. As for Mr. Cheney, he is the reason that terror organization is so strong today. He took the pressure off Bin laden and Afghanistan to concentrate on a neo-conservative wrong policy and personal profiteering (Haliburton, etc) in a needlessly war effort (Iraq). In the process he made Iran very strong by eliminating its lethal enemy (Sadam). So, Mr Cheney ought to shut up. The damage he and Mr. Bush did to the U.S. security and economy, not to mention the thousands of lives lost or damaged, is hard to measure.

Unfortunately, everytime the former Veep opens his mouth he gives aide and comfort to the enemy– it would seem he is actively partaking in the behavior that he deemed "unAmeriacan" when GW Bush was our President- that is: criticizing a "wartime president"....please, if you have nothing constructive to add, just go away Mr. Cheney

The administration clains "..The clear evidence is that this president has been very, very strong...." in figting terrorism . Yes, about as strong as he has been admitting that the latest incidences on US soil were terror attacs. Ignoring or failing to attach the proper name to a problem doesn't make it disappear, nor does the III Reich Goebel style propaganda by the Whithouse! Let's import some more of the terrorists to New York, or better, to DC so to make the office of the Whitehouse feel more secure.
