Palin to speak at major GOP event

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will speak at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in April.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will speak at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in April.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will not be speaking at this year's Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, but she has accepted an invitation to speak at a higher profile event that could have implications for the 2012 presidential race.

Palin will speak at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans, a major gathering of Republican officials, donors and activists from 14 southern states, organizers announced Thursday.

"I'm looking forward to addressing conservative activists from across the south at the 2010 Southern Republican Leadership Conference," Palin said in a statement. "This is a great opportunity to listen and speak to those who are helping to set the direction of our party."

A Palin confidante said the governor is not being paid to speak at the event.

Political watchers will be paying close attention, and not just because several potential presidential candidates are expected to attend. The SRLC - "the most prominent Republican event outside of a Republican National Convention," the organization boasts - also conducts a presidential straw poll.

The straw poll has had a mixed record of predicting future electoral success. George W. Bush, who was then governor of Texas, won the poll in 1998, two years before his presidential bid. But former Tennessee Sen. Bill Frist, who never mounted a presidential bid, took first place at the 2006 SRLC.

"We're excited to have Governor Palin join us in New Orleans. She represents the future of the Republican Party and will be a huge draw for conservative activists from across the country," SRLC Director Charlie Davis said in an accompanying statement.

What! No speaking fee? Oh, that's because she'll sell copies of her book for $4.50 and $8.50 for a signed copy...

Certainly America has reached it's tolerance of Washington politics focused on serving Washington politicians at the expense of America. We welcome Sarah Palin and her brand of ideas where the government actually works for the interest of the people. This approach will continue to build her support base much larger than it is even now.

Apparently the main stream media doesn't think the economy, health care, or terrorism is enough to fill 24 hours. They need to dig up past losers to fill all that time.

If this is news then we have a huge problem in this country. Yearly conferences are not big news. They happen all the time and in all areas of the country. Does it really matter who speaks or participates or is the media blowing in the wind once again.

Guess there isn't much news today. Sarah Palin resigned her political position. She is a citizen like the rest of us and her ideas are no more valid then mine or yours. She is not making policy decisions so she does not have to answer to anyone unlike those who remained in office until the end of their terms.

Thank God Sarah is able to rise way above the tripe, slander and name calling from all these "good" democrats. They can't stand her, but none have been able to truthfully explain why. They prefer to call her names and repeat outright lies that they've heard on one of the very few liberal talk radio shows. I'd love to hear her speak, and find out what her plans are, and more about her ideas than we've been given so far.

She certainly has more substance than BO..the liberals are behind the times..all the lies from MSM about her have "come home to roost" on Obama–sorry to be so pathetically mean–just learned from the best (the liberals)

I'm sure there are many speakers at major GOP events. Please, please, please stop following this woman's every move. We really don't care. The only thing we care about is the fact that a major news organization is wasting valuable space and time promoting her when there are much more significant issues about which we would like to have information. The woman has CNN wrapped around her little finger, even though she has little or nothing of substance to add to the national conversation.

This woman's brain doesn't connect, she is mentally defective, she can't make an intelligent sentence and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Think about it.

I thought she made it pretty clear she was done with politics when she QUIT her job as governor. She's made lots of money, criticized the media and continued to lie about health care. She doesn't worry me, think I have her figured out but the fact that people really think she's still relevant does worry me. And don't come back with she's scaring us and that's why we comment. Why would anyone be scared of her? What has she really done?

No doubt Mrs. Palin has alll the accoutrements that appeals to that base.

    >No real political savvy.

    >A sandoffish connection with the people (well, if you must, i'm your gal 'til I get what I want or something better comes along!)

    >A hint of a life somewhat tainted with drudgery gained from Alaskan politics and McCain's handlers.

    > Not to omit the unomittable good looks that could be the downfall of many NASCAR heavy breathers. (It's me again, Margaret!)

Sorry, CNN Sara Palin is not that popular any more. She and her Jerry Springer family would be a great threat to this country. How can this woman run this country, if she can not run her house. She is the joker of the year in 2009. She still lying about the Death Panel which is why she have been come irrelavent. There are way more serious things happen in this country then continue to follower Sara Palin around.

The more she speaks, the more she damages the republican party. It is time for the news agencies to start covering people who know what they are talking about.

Oh boy, here goes CNN again pulling our collective chains with another "important story" about Sarah Palin. Two questions: If she had been short and dumpy with frizzy hair and bucked teeth, do you think 1) John McCain would have chosen her for his running mate and 2) she would continue to receive so much press? Enough already. I'd rather hear about 19 year-old Bristol's new PR firm.

  22. Really!!!!!!

I am sick and tired of my party using this woman to headline any political event. She is like a radio which only broadcasts but has no response to any question. Stop making the GOP look like a party of nitwits, there are too many intelligent people in our party.......where is Romney, Huckabey, Ron Paul etc. Stop degrading this party. Sarah Palin ought to be the face of the need for education reform in America. She is the epitome of the flaws in our educational system, which produces low quality like her. If she is really serious about anything, let her get out of facebook and answer some real intelligent policy questions about our country. She is going to ruin the GOP and spoil our chances of nomination a real candidate. The democrats are so excited about the prospects of her becoming our candidate in 2012.

I would vote for her if McCain isn't her running mate. Not really happy with the trend towards socialism we have now. Tired of paying for those that don't pay for themselves. This current administration is nothing like what I thought it would or should be

My first reaction was yuck, but then we really need the tourist business down here in NOLA, so what the hell, let all of them come down here and spend big time! It will be very interesting to see all of these holier than thou Bible-thumpers hanging out in the bars and strip joints on Bourbon Street, just like all the rest of the rubes who come here looking for fun.
