N.J. to vote on bill to let illegal immigrants pay in-state tuition

Supporters hope to pass the measure before Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine leaves office.

(CNN) - Both houses of the New Jersey legislature plan to vote Monday on a controversial bill backed by Democrats that would qualify illegal immigrants for in-state tuition at public colleges and universities.

Supporters hope to pass the measure before Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine leaves office. Gov.-elect Christopher J. Christie, a Republican who takes office January 19, has said he opposes the bill.

On Thursday, a Senate vote on the legislation was postponed.

After hours of heated debate January 4, the bill passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee, 7-4, and the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, 8-6. Both votes were along party lines.

Is it controversial because someone from
New York, Kansas or Alabama who has paid
their taxes and worked in the U.S.A. would still
have to pay out of state tuition ??????

Sure, give them free healthcare, cheap education, the chance to take the jobs that our citizens need, etc... You idiot liberals and your agenda will be thrown out in 2010 and then the head of the snake will be thrown out in 2012!

Apparently, some people have trouble grasping the concept of "illegal". That means, "against the law". How much clearer can it be? Do some have to obey the laws and others not? According to NJ Democrats that's exactly the way things work.

Corzine is a discard. Democrats want to make maximum damage to NJ and our country while in office. They will pass anything even on the last day in office. I hope NJ voters make note and throw them out in 2010 election.

Remember illegal immigrants are from all parts of the World and of all nationalities, so don't let this block your mind to think they're only Mexicans.

If illegal immigrants are allowed in-state rates, then why do foreign students from other countries have to pay more?

Sounds like the legal precedent is being set for NJ residents (the ones that pay taxes) to provide a low-cost college education to everyone in the world who wants one, except their own kids.

Give me a break. They are extending priveliges of residency to people who don't belong in New Jersey...YET don't have the bravery to extend the right to marry for people who have lived there all their lives!?

Not only are their priorities screwed up....they're cowards too!

This is totally ridiculous and a slap in the face to law-abiding citizens and LEGAL immigrants. Why should an illegal immigrant (who is breaking the law by definition) be allowed to pay substantially less for tuition than a US citizen or legal immigrant who happens to live in another US state! If this idiotic bill is passed any legal resident of the US should be allowed to pay in-state tuition.

As if! You have to be kidding. If this goes through then give illegal murderers amnesty from prosecution. Illegal is illegal. Now we are going to have to pay for hand outs to the illegal. Remember your terms of office are going up for reelection soon. Maybe thats why we see so many Congressmen and Senators quitting.

These people are criminals. They shouldn't be allowed in these schools under ANY circumstances. They should be deported. Why reward them for breaking the law/ What is the matter with these Democrats? Glad I live in GA now, where I at least hope this wouldn't even come up for a vote.

I am an Illinois resident and want to go to college in New Jersey. Can I get in-state tuition, as well? My guess is no.

Why do liberals hate Americans and want to give away American benefits to illegals? Any wonder why there are trying to ram this bill though? Who do they think they are, Congress?

Why? Why do this? Why are Democrats SO invested in illegals immigrants?

    Votes.

Democrats are ready willing and able to sell this country down the river , dilute us with 20 million people who have ZERO desire to become Americans – but simply suckle from her teet while they remain mexicans at heart.

Everybody knows how very very close alot of our elections are – be they local , state or elections for the presidency.

Now imagine , 20 million illegals are given citizenship overnight. Who do you think they will vote for in all future elections? Republicans?
Green Party? Uh.... perhaps they'll vote for the party that legitimized their invasion of our country – and made them instant-citizens .

This is it folks. This is the reason Democrats fight SO hard AGAINST the collective will of the American people. Political power.

Nothing comes before the Democrats aspirations for power – even changing (destruction) of our country as we have traditionally known her. Or... maybe they're just such humanitarians that they can't help but "do what's right" for a peoples so less fortunate than us.

We are ALL being played by the Democrats and you will either allow them to do it , or you will fight them and defeat them.

It's about votes pure and simple. Now you know it too...

Nope, just look at Maryland, same thing only earlier. But here the illegal alien had to have obtained a free high school education in the state public schools first, all while their parents worked for under the table wages and paid no taxes including social security and medicare. Wake up, this is more of what health care reform will bring.

how does this make sense? if one isn't even a legal resident of a state, how do they qualify for in-state tution fees, which is based upon residency? when i moved from NJ to attend school in another state, i didn't qualify for their in-state fees, and i'm a US citizen.
