Ex-Red Sox star slams Democrat for Yankees quip

Former Red Sox ace Curt Schilling blasted Martha Coakley Saturday after the Democrat told a Boston radio talk show host that Schilling, a Republican, is a Yankees fan.

Washington (CNN) – Former Red Sox ace Curt Schilling blasted Martha Coakley Saturday after the Massachusetts Democratic Senate hopeful told a Boston radio talk show host that Schilling, a Republican, is a Yankees fan.

This is a serious charge in "Red Sox Nation": Schilling is a part of baseball lore as the pitcher who battled through pain with a bloody ankle in 2004 to defeat the Yankees in Game Six of the American League Championship Series.

"I've been called a LOT of things," Schilling wrote on his blog at 1:06 a.m. ET. "But never, and I mean never, could anyone ever make the mistake of calling me a Yankee fan. Well, check that, if you didn't know what the hell is going on in your own state maybe you could…."

Schilling, who considered running for the Senate seat, is backing GOP nominee Scott Brown in Tuesday's special election to replace the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Coakley quickly recanted her assertion after host Dan Rea challenged her on the statement in the Friday interview. A campaign spokesman told CNN that Coakley simply failed to deliver on the joke.

"Curt Schilling has been involved in a lot of strike outs over time," the spokesman said. "I guess Martha whiffed on that joke."

Brown is a terrorist...He wants to kill the health care bill....Millions uninsured will die...Worse than anything Al Qaeda has ever done..]

You're a disgrace to the name Peter with that comment. No one will die more if this bill doesn't get passed. That is just stupid! I am too for health care reform, not overhaul. My god people, you don't rush a bill of this importance and that's what they're doing. Can't you see they're more worried about just passing it than getting it right?! It's sick!

Thank you so much for being the Democratic candidate in Massachusetts Coakley---every day that you open your mouth-–you are just bringing Scott Brown closer to a win in Massachusetts!!!!

Shilling should shut up. He had a chance to run for Senate and turned it down. What a whiner!

No terrorists in Afghanistan and now Schilling is Yankee fan? This lady is a joke. The democrats found out quickly that even a state as left as Mass is fed up with phony politicians. Gov Patrick woke people up that having a (D) next to the name doesn't mean what it use to.

Coakley is dumber than a bag of hammers. No real debate about that.

The really amazing thing is that she is the best that Mass. could come up with, as a state filled with such smart and liberal people.

So let me get this straight. Democrats in MA are going to vote against the Democratic candidate to teach the Democrats a lesson? Or simply because the Democrat called Curt Schilling, a baseball player a Yankee fan. OMG! OMG !! what is the world coming to!!!! What a lesson , vote in more Republicans so they can continue to obstruct everything the Democratic President tries to do? Great lesson, WOW, great lesson for all those so call Democrats who after only one year are willing to give back power to the Republican party who are in fact the reason President Obama has to make the choices he is making. Way to go giving the Democrats time to make a difference. I mean after all Republicans had eight years to screw the country and we only think a Democrat should have one year to make a difference. Oh, not fast enough, lets give power back to the very people who didn't know what to do in the eight years they were in control. Gotta love inpatient Americans.

Martha is such a joke of a candidate. She does not know that the Taliban are still in Afganistan, her campaign people cannot spell Massachusetts, she is pushing for health care reform when only 36% of Americans still support it and she claims she has not idea what happened when a staffer knocked down a reporter when she was standing right there. She thought the seat was "hers" just because she is the Democratic candidate. She hid for weeks and now we know why-she has no grasp of the issues. Now she has to bring in Clinton and Obama to try to save her.

While on the surface this seems to be just another dumb comment from another dumb politician, but when looking deeper it actually shows how this woman is so out of touch with her electorate. If she is really going to Washington D.C. to lobby for the "common man", how could she not understand that "common man's" love for the Sawx ? She would have had to have been living on another planet since 1967 not to know the status of Fenway's team and the hero status of one Mr. Schilling.

As for healthcare reform, anyone in MA knows that there is MassCare, which would be totally crippled by a new federal bill that would suck local taxes away from the state program. Scott Brown isn't looking to kill what MA already has. He just wants to prevent MA tax dollars from going to the Fed.

Let other states come up with their own local programs. Keep the Fed and their penchant for spending $ foolishly out of the mix. If you want to see how well the Fed Gov't runs healthcare, look no further than the VA Hospitals. If you want that kind of medical treatment for everyone voted for Coakley who will rubberstamp "Dirty Harry" dirty bill built on bribery and coercion.

Oh, great. That jerk Schilling inserting his extreme far right politics into Massachusetts again. I was a Red Sox fan until I heard him speak up in 2004. That killed that Red Sox victory for me and I've never rooted for them again. He's a total jerk-off.

As an independent voter in MA, it baffles me how Ms Coakley keeps shooting herself in the foot. Mr Kennedy would not have let Nebraska hijack their own health rules. Either it is the same for all, or scrap it. Mr Brown, you have my vote........

The counter revolution begins in MA. It doesn't matter much if Brown is elected or not. It is just the fact that the Marxist/Democrat/corrupt pack of dogs that Obama is leading will finally be put down.

Martha Coakley is incredibly ill-informed about so many issues; it is difficult to believe that any serious political party could have nominated her for a major office. That a former president (Clinton) and Obama are actually campaigning for her shows the how desperate the Dems are to shove Obamacare down our throats.

Hmmm this from a guy who found out he didn't have the support to run for office and like the moke he is he dropped out. Oh well he can pan and slur and make people think he knows something. Probably too much steroids between the ears...needs a good steam cleaning.

Typical Dems when it is a celebrity like Oprah, and the other half baked Hollywood faithful and some sports celebrities supporting them they get all weak at the knees and slobbering but now the celebrity is anti Dem and they cry out' we don't listen to celebrities". Well it certainly taken you a long time to start moving to independent thinkers Republicans have for years.

  19. The Tea Party Movement is Not The Friend of Wall Street Con Men

Brown is against taxing Wall Street for their negligence in causing the financial meltdown. Why? Maybe because the boys in New York are bankrolling his campaign.

Brown may pretend he is with the Tea Party, but he's really in bed with the fat cats.

Vote Kennedy – the third choice for the Tea Party Patriots

Kurt Schilling has alot of nerve saying anything against a Democrat. When in fact it was the democrats that made him filthy rich from ticket sales, and the tax breaks he recieved from Bush that crippled the middle class. I've seen interviews where he slammed the Redsox organization and hopes the yankees kick their butts. If he denies this claim he is just another Republican liar. This guy just needs to SHUT UP.

Isn't Coakley the same person (ok, granted, it's probably her team who put it together), but couldn't spell Massachusetts (the state she is hoping to represent) in an ad? What does that say? I think Schilling can spell. Don't believe it, feel free to Google it.

If the Yankees offered Curt Shilling $1000 more than the Red Sox, Shilling would be a Yankee. It's just business, like being a want-a-be Republican.
