Steele: RNC worked behind-the-scenes in Massachusetts

Michael Steele is talking up the RNC's efforts in Massachusetts.

Washington (CNN) – The polls haven't closed yet in Massachusetts, but the Republican National Committee distributed a memo to committee members and reporters Tuesday boasting about their under-the-radar efforts to help Scott Brown defeat Martha Coakley in the Senate race.

The memo, written by RNC chairman Michael Steele, asserts that the national party "has been working very diligently behind the scenes" in Massachusetts along with the state Republican Party and the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Steele said that because Democrats wanted "to make an issue of 'national Republicans" interfering in this race ... we have stayed out of the limelight while supporting the Brown campaign and the Massachusetts Republican Party."

But Steele said the RNC has been on the ground for more than two months, having dispatched staffers to Massachusetts immediately after big GOP wins in the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial elections last November, in addition to sending an additional 32 staffers to the Bay State along with busing in 160 volunteers as Election Day approached.

An RNC official would not say how much money the party spent on the race. (UPDATE: Alex Castellanos, a consultant to the RNC, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that the national party sent roughly $500,000 into Massachusetts, in line with what the National Republican Senatorial Committee spent on the race.)

Steele said that with the help of "innovative" voter identification technology and get-out-the-vote programs implemented by the RNC, almost two million voters were contacted before Tuesday's vote.

Despite the cheerleading, the memo acknowledged that a Brown victory is not yet a certainty.

"Win or lose, Scott Brown has run an excellent campaign, a campaign focused on the great issues of our time, and a campaign that we can all be proud of," Steele wrote.

Story updated at 5:45 p.m. EST with RNC money figure.

Perhaps it would be more prudent of the Chairman to keep his mouth closed until the election is over. Telling people who are voting for Brown because they see him as "anti-establishment" that the RNC actually snuck into MA in the dead of the night to secretly back Brown for months doesn't quite seem like the best message to convey while voters are still making their way to the polls. I mean, granted, at this point it wouldn't make much of a difference; but as the Chairman, these intelligent thoughts SHOULD come to his mind.

The GOP's technology will have to be pretty innovative in order to fool people into thinking that Brown, like the GOP, is merely a tool of the health insurance and pharmaceutical industry. It may work though, American voters are long on opinion and short on knowledge (as exemplified by the teabaggers) and have the attention span of a gnat.

Yes. cons operating "under the radar" is the reason we are in the economic mess we are currenlty in.

Two wars and tax breaks to the rich are a very poor foundation for "trickle down" economics.

Only fools think we got into this mess in the last year.

Lets hope the RNC's extra efforts have helped Brown enough to win this election. This would be the kind of success I'm inspired to donate for. Imagine getting the Federal government back working for the American people...the ones besides the unions and Wall Street financiers and bankers!

I can’t wait till Steele is replaced. He does the dumbest things and I can’t believe republicans would have him as their voice. Why would you say this before the poles close, why would you say it at all. He was put into this position based on his skin color not his qualifications. I guess that is politics though.

Oh yes! It must be an evil Republican plot if Brown gets elected! It couldn't possibly be because we people who live in Mass have already elected him to public office once and liked what he did well enough to move him up into the big leagues. Oh Woe Is Me! How could we Bay-Staters possibly have known how stoopid we obviously were to elect a guy that the rest of the country doesn't think we should have! -Look-Brown didn't just materialize one day, take the hayseed out of his mouth and drawl "vote fer me fer national office ya dumb rubes"-he actually has a track record here that apparently most of us in ths state approve of. Imagine that! we voted him into state office-had a few years to watch what he did-and we liked it! And guess what? We're voting for him again!

  28. Democrats Are Too Comfortable - Fire Someone

The Republican party is good at obfuscating the truth. They outmanuver the Democrats in "branding" ... Remember how the word "Conservative" became a positive and "Liberal" a negative.

I seems that just like last summer (July & August), they may have spun enough "bumper sticker" simplicity to turn the simple minded people against Ms. Coakley.

Given the Democrats 2008 much touted advanced technology (Twitter, Facebook, Text messaging, YouTube) edge ... it is unacceptable that the Republicans could mount a "get-out-the-vote" effort anywhere close to making this race competitive.

Someone (in the DNC) should be fired over this if true. I think it should also put heat on David Axelrod. During the Presidential campaign, along with Plouffe, he was all over stuff like this.

In the end, this type of inepptitude makes it impossible for President Obama to be the transformation figure he could be and that this nation needs.

I don't know how much effort they put or how much money they spent but this is a crucial race. Coakley ran a weak campaign, and that's based on reports and assertions made about her. I heard good things about Brown so is no surprise it can be close than expected.

I don't know mass but I do know how its people think. I do want them to send a message and if Coackley losses, she's gonna look back and see the lil mistakes she made because she thought it was already in the bank. Nothing is a guarantee, especially in politics.

I want her to lose, I do. I'm getting tired of their liberal and egoistic agenda.

"Why is showing off a truck and playing basketball more important for a US Senator than working to reduce the budget deficit and downsize every federal agency?"

Same reason that calling Shilling a Yankees fan and some dumb techy mispelling Massachusetts in your advertisement merited more news than Coakley's policy positions:

BECAUSE THE "NEWS" MEDIA SAID SO BY MAKING THOSE THINGS WHAT IT FED THE PUBLIC INSTEAD OF REAL JOURNALISM AND DISCUSSION OF ISSUES.

Unfortunately, the Republicans are under estimating the Democrats will and might. I believe health care reform will get through and it will have a bi-partisan flavor. We tend to forget that there are Republicans who need to run for re-election too. If the republican congress totally votes against health care reform, some will definitely loose their seats as a result. It's good that the media is spicing this up. But media please be fair in the reporting. Health care reform is too important to be media-down.

It is also unfortunate that some Mass. residents feel that because they have health care reform, they do not want to see the country undergo the process, like Sen Edward Kennedy wanted. I don't think some of the residents see the benefits to them.

I listened to Martha Coakley and Brown. Brown is a celebrity want-a-be, and I don't think he will be office long. He sound radical and unorthodox. Coakley is quiet but a good public servant, and I feel she would make the best US senator.

This guy's been a state senator and wants to make a career out of being a politician by running for US senator. If people really want change, they need to vote out every career politician and vote for newbies. People seem to forget these politicians were supposed to represent the people, not their own best personal interests. Since we can't get the senate to vote for term limits, we, the people, need to put term limits in place by only letting them serve 8 years and then vote them out. If we continue to let them serve year after year, we only get what we deserve.....nothing!

What Scott Brown really wants is the great medical insurance that Congress members get for themselves and their families.

He has already promised to vote "no" on health insurance for the rest of us.

Massachusetts, if he wins, you get what you PAY FOR. His insurance but not yours!

The disgusting thing is when either party takes credit for something instead of giving credit to Americans for voting or acting in a certain way. They think everything is their work and you are just some mindless moron waiting for them to tell you what to do. Neither party has a high opinion of you. You are just pawns to them.

Scott Brown received biggest donation from ordinary Americans all over the US. He also has many volunteers, a lot of young people volunteer for Scott Brown. In his phone bank alone, people are lining up to help making phone calls in MA.

This election in MA don't have D and R anymore, it's about country, survival of a nation. Independent voters in MA which is the majority of registered voters (51%) are fired up, they're very angry; they're voting for Scott Brown, 17% of registered Democrats are voting for Scott Brown.

Massachussetts, for their own good better certify Brown right away if he's the declared winner or else the people of MA will have a riot.

Working behind the scenes is nothing new for the republican party. Most of their dirty work is done in the dark. If the republican candidate wins the Massachusetts race, democrats can say the win is a perfect example of political propaganda at work. After all the republicans ran up the US debt and had control in DC for 8 years. The Obama administration is not the reason our country is in the mess we're in. However, America has a short attention span and all the republican led propaganda has made us forget all the woes left from the last administration. Therefore, we rely on CNN and other news media to give us truthful facts, "just the facts." All the other stuff just muddies the water.

Actually Actually I am glad to know that the Republicans finally woke up to the fact that this race was important - not to the political parties but to the nation and ACTUAL healthcare reform. Does anyone think that the Democrats didn't know the importance of this election? The Democrats just thought that Massachusetts voters would blindly follow them and overestimated the political savvy of their candidate.

No matter how this race turns out, at least both political parties have been issued a wake-up call. My hubby and I both quit our respective political parties and we, like many, are looking for true CHANGE.
It is a testament to the type of people who attended Tea Parties that they seem to be decent persons or there would be riots instead of mild mannered concerned citizens who are tired of the status quo and the media.

What folks forget is that Massachusetts already has universal health care with 98% of MA residents covered, so the Obamacare would only hurt us AND COST US MORE IN TAXES. This is where Coakley got off track, and why Kerry is also wrong. Massachusetts is more concerned with jobs than health care. We do not need and do not want the Obama version of health care. Why would any Massachusetts taxpayer want to pay for the medicare of Montana and Nevada (in this bill to buy the votes of Nelson and Reid)? And why would Massachusetts want to tax small business owners because on this trillion dollar white elephant? The answer is – WE DO NOT WANT IT. WE WANT JOBS JOBS JOBS

Every state congressman from Massachusetts is a Democrat, including many powerful ones. And what did these guys do for us - NOTHING

Obama and the dems like to blame verything on Bush and Cheney. People forget that for the past two years of Bush, the Democrats controlled Congress.... and the Dems controlled COngress for 34 of the past 40 years. Bush had to deal with 9-11 and a world wide economic disaster as a result. And becasue of this, the defitis went up. BUT Obama has increased the deficit in one short year by more than all previous presidents COMBINED> It ain's close folks - the problems this country faces now is largely the fault of democrats in congress and Obama's inexperience and inability to control Pelosi and reid

Tomorrow's headline is going to be, "Democrats lose Kennedy seat: Obama blames Bush!"

The palatable desperation Obama showed at the rally last weekend would have been comical if it were not so sad. Nothing's my fault, everything bad is my predecessor! I know the democrat's aren't usually the brightest bulbs in the fixture, but don't they realize that they have been in control of congress for the last four years straight?

The most important thing to realize is that the American people are paying attention now. And now the socialists are on notice that their ideas are not wanted. That they should get lost because the American people are real winners not looking for handouts from a government and that they are a proud people not willing to beg for money but rather work for it. That is the spirit that made this country great in the first place and Bam bam has a lot of learning to do. Good bye socialists!

A Brown win may be just the shot the Democrats need to say enough is enough and go the reconciliation way and start getting things done.

They could start by giving us single payer universal health care. Then on to energy and immigration reform. Let the Republicans play their filibuster game by themselves.

If the Democrats had kicked Lieberman out already we would have gotten health care by now because we would never get the 60 votes needed in the first place because the Republicans will never help this President and without 60 votes to end their filibuster the only way to get anything done is by reconciliation.

Hmm.. it's not OK if the RNC works in the background , but it is OK if obama , and the rest of the caracters can do the same thing.

    That's what's wrong with this country. It's a free country ( for now ) ..

It's not him vs her.. or rnc vs dnc.. People.. It's because the politicians are not listening to the people they are to represent.

Everyone is getting some sweet deal n this bailout , health care crisis.. except for us, the middle class people.. w'll have to pay more because of the Louisiana Purchase , the nebraska deal, the unions..

everyon's got a deal except those of us earling less than 80,000 who are going to pay dearly for these "sweetheart deals"..

Sad to think that Republicans have so little faith in or RESPECT FOR our Democracy that they feel COMPELLED to cheat to win.

What I draw from that kind of circumstance is this – If they are willing to cheat to get in, what will they do once they are?
