(CNN) - Cindy McCain, the wife of the 2008 Republican presidential candidate, has posed for a Web site promoting same-sex marriage.
McCain, who's married to Arizona Sen. John McCain, appears in a photograph on the site with a piece of silver duct tape over her mouth and the slogan "No H8" written on her cheek.
The site's owners were stunned when Mrs. McCain came to them with the idea of posing for them, they said when posting her photo Wednesday.
"We've often been surprised at some of the different individuals who have approached us showing their support. Few, though, have surprised us more than Cindy McCain," wrote Adam Bouska and Jeff Parshley.
"The McCains are one of the most well-known Republican families in recent history, and for Mrs. McCain to have reached out to us to offer her support truly means a lot," they wrote.
"Cindy McCain wanted to participate in the campaign to show people that party doesn't matter - marriage equality isn't a Republican issue any more than it is a Democratic issue," they argued, saying it was "about human rights."
The McCains' daughter Meghan, a vocal supporter of same-sex marriage, also appears on the site.
"I couldn't be more proud of my mother for posing for the NOH8 campaign. I think more Republicans need to start taking a stand for equality," Meghan McCain wrote on her Twitter page.
Meghan McCain appears holding an elephant - the symbol of the Republican party - with tape over its tusks.
Running for president, John McCain said he believed marriage should be between one man and one woman.
He reiterated that view through a spokeswoman Thursday.
"Senator McCain respects the views of members of his family. The senator chaired the effort to successfully pass Arizona Proposition 102, the Marriage Protection Amendment, and his opposition to gay marriage remains the same," Brooke Buchanan said.
The No H8 campaign arose in response to California's back-and-forth on same-sex marriage - first approved by the courts, then overturned by voters in a statewide referendum called Proposition 8. The issue is back in court now.
Bouska, a photographer, launched the site with Parshley "as a silent protest," they wrote.
It showcases pictures of Californians who oppose Proposition 8, they wrote when it launched nearly a year ago. It expanded to include celebrities and other supporters of same-sex marriage, all appearing with duct tape over their mouths and "No H8" painted on their cheeks.

now, if only we can get some ductape over her husband's mouth.
How wonderful. As the mother of a gay son I've been very upset with the usual flock of Republicans that seem so hell bent and hateful on making decisions in the lives of others that would in no way effect their own lives one bit. Seeing Mrs. McCain in this add is like seeing a small ray of sun light in the middle of a very dark storm. I hope this shows that others are waking up to the belief that despite personal and religious beliefs every person should have the same rights under the laws and constitution in this country.
I am so proud of Cindy McCain for this....now this is what I call "a true Maverick".
We are all loved by our Creator. He just wants to bring us good so that why He says '..I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. '
Why should this be a surprise? All republicans are not alike, some have minds of their own.
to whom it may concern the reason you get married is to have a family as we are a family with god two women or two men having sex will not create nothing it is a false love, false marriage,a falsehood.america says in god we trust is it god the evil one or is it the real god.that condemms homosexuality.americalook at what is what is happenning to our land.change your way of thinking before really hard time come.reallybad thing happen.canada approved same sex marriage and canada started to sufferdont approve it.the blind will not be able to comprehend this the spirittually blind that is or lacking jesus inthere soul amen
good for her. always knew her views were different
I suddenly like her a lot more. I used to like her husband until he became a lap dog to the party elite that dragged his good reputation through the mud during the Bush smear campaign.
More power to her and to all those that refuse to let legalized discrimination occur in this great country.
Although she acted very strange while campaining with her husband in 2008 (It probably was the Palin affect)...she is doing the right thing, following her heart now.
Good for her. As someone who leans Democratic, part of the reason for that is that Republicans overall seem to have views on social issues that are backwards and out of date so that I tend to vote Democrat. if Republicans showed more of this, less bias towards gays, less focus on religion, things like abortion and Terry Schiavo, I would be more inclined to vote for them. But it does seem as soon as a somewhat moderate republican comes on the scene, the ultra right wingers keep them down.
Wow, a Republican who cares about ALL America's citizens - who would have thought? She needs to kick her old geezer of a husband in the arse because he is just one more rich, white, out of touch idiot who likes to control people's lives.
You go Cindy!!!!!
Good for you, Cindy.
Good for Cindy, that she can stand up for what she believes in.
Let them marry....who cares.
move on you right wing radical over the top un-american bigotted un-christianlike christian!! my god. get over your selfishness.
Ms McCain, Megan. Get out of the house while you are showing signs of reasonableness. Don't be insulted and don't be distracted by your disttracters and obstructors. Senator McCain, there were a number of times that you showed some grit yourself where you openly disagreed with things not right. Maybe you should get out of the "house" too, so you won't have to continually endure yourself and those talking points that are thrust upon you.
What a joke – if she really feels this issue, she should've spoke up when it would've mattered (ie. when hubby was running for Prez). Don't worry – Repubs will get her back in the party line....give it a few days (plus a call from either Rush or Ailes).
I think it's good that more Republican are supporting this issue. This way it doesn't become some political thing. Also, I like that Meghan, she's bringing her party to the 21st century.
Way to go, Cindy!
See, there is a bright side to Obama's election...the GOP is not saddled with this idiot as first lady.
Its very simple. If the idea of same sex marriage makes your blood boil or you otherwise give the concept more than two minutes of thought a week, you have serious issues about your own sexuality that you are fighting, albeit unsuccessfully. America is for freedom-period. Prohibitions against same sex marriage are as unAmerican as previous prohibitions against inter-racial marriages legislated by men who more than likely had half-brothers or cousins of a different ethnic group and girl friends as well.
So even though she's supporting the liberal agenda here, stand by for a wave of liberal hate. Because that's just who they are.
"to whom it may concern the reason you get married is to have a family as we are a family..."
Speak for yourself. That was not the reason my wife and I married.
Thinks to losers like her, some of the people I work with do not have the same rights that I do
I don't believe for a nanosec that there's any other motivation except to try to win votes for the Repugs from the LGBT community. Many are very disgruntled about Barack W. Obama's failure to honor his campaign promises. It's merely an opportunistic act.
News Flash People, quit blaming Republicans for not allowing gay marriage. The American people have voted no on it every time it comes up.
I have regained some respect for her and by association, him, I am shocked to say. You go, Cindy! This is one tolerant, progressive, compassionate, non-discriminatory, well-educated, heterosexual, married mother of two who is very proud of you.
