Specter to Bachmann: 'Act like a lady'

Rep. Michele Bachmann was told to 'act like a lady' by Sen. Arlen Specter on Wednesday.
Rep. Michele Bachmann was told to 'act like a lady' by Sen. Arlen Specter on Wednesday.

Washington (CNN) - A heated political debate and charges of sexism erupted on Philadelphia talk radio Wednesday when Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pennsylvania, told Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minnesota, to "act like a lady."

Specter and Bachmann appeared on WPHT radio to discuss the what President Obama has accomplished in his first year in office. When Specter began to respond to Bachmann's claim that Scott Brown's special election victory in Massachusetts was a repudiation of the Obama administration's policies, Bachmann interjected - to the clear frustration of the longtime Senator.

"I didn't interrupt you," Specter said. "This is beginning to sound like a TV talk show."

When Bachmann interrupted again, Specter angrily responded. "Now wait a minute, I'll stop and you can talk," he said. "I'll treat you like a lady, so act like one."

"I am a lady," Bachmann retorted.

She again interrupted Specter later in the interview. And again, Specter told her to "act like a lady." Bachmann one more time confirmed that she is a lady.

"Well I think you are too, that's why I'm treating you like one," Specter said. "But just don't interrupt me."

The National Republican Senatorial Committee, which is hoping to defeat Specter this November if he survives a Democratic primary challenge from Rep. Joe Sestak, seized on the comment

"Instead of belittling his female colleagues, Arlen Specter should take his own advice and act like a gentleman," said NRSC spokeswoman Amber Wilkerson Marchand. She said that the five-term Senator would be held accountable by women in his state "if he makes it to the General Election in November."

Calls to both the Specter and Bachmann press offices were not immediately returned.

Good for Sen. Specter. That woman stands up and yells out lies and distortions the likes of her hero, Sara.

I hope Minnesota folks have their brains in the proper head the next time they vote. Otherwise, let them secede.

Old fashioned words, yes. The expectation that another adult should be respectful, timeless. She's a crazy person who wasn't acting like a lady or a gentleman!!!!!

She was repeatedly rude toward Senator Spector and he called her on it.

I don't see a problem here ... but then again, I'm not a whiny, bratty Rethuglican.

She's not a lady; she's just another pretty-faced Republican witch, self-righteous and stupid, and a total embarrassment to our political process.

Bachman is NOT a lady, she's a nut case. This woman isn't wrapped too tight in the brain department. She's a wacko. Someone needs to duck tape her mouth.

To act like a lady you have to be one-and this is NO lady.

"Instead of belittling his female colleagues, Arlen Specter should take his own advice and act like a gentleman," said NRSC spokeswoman Amber Wilkerson Marchand.

Specter did act like a gentleman in asking Bachmann to stop interrupting him.

She acted like a self-righteous witch by refusing to do so.

See, that's the problem with Rethuglicans: They are a bunch of whiny, thin-skinned hypocrits.

You can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, Babes!

act like a lady, act like a gentleman–it's more to do with class than gender–"act like a lady" means to have good manners...this feminist is laughing at the Repubs for barking up that tree.

Bachmann is another right-wing Looney Tune Moonbat, right up there with Limbaugh, Beck, and Hannity.

As far as being a lady, that's debatable...Ann Coulter come to mind?

At first blush (no pun intended), this sounds like a sexist comment by Arlen Specter. But the parallel would be to tell a man to act "like a gentleman." So I don't think he was out of line. What he meant was to please be courteous. That's how ladies and gentlemen behave.

So, I am a feminist, and I really don't think Specter was being sexist. I think he was asking Bachman to be a "lady" in the sense of being polite and not interrupting, just as we would ask a man to act like a "gentleman" when we wanted him to be more polite. Note that the NRSC person asked Specter to act like a gentleman, i.e., to be polite- it was the same premise, so why wasn't that sexist (..because neither comment was sexist) . This is just the opposition creating controversy where there is none.

Go ARLEN!! Enough of the rude right wingers who do little more than shout over people and then claim to be closer to God and more American than others.

They have ZERO IDEAS other than keeping the status quo and making sure their base get more tax breaks while the country goes broke.

Go away Bachman, you're an empty (Chanel) suit.

if she had been a 'he' the comment would have been to act like a gentlemen... the fact is she is a lady, and he was pointing out her rude behavior... probably better he just asked her to stop being so rude by interrupting him, but seriously, you're going to call the guy a sexist for asking her to act like a professional adult, and the lady she claims to be?

  21. I, the Person

I beg to differ with Mr. Spector's assessment. I think Ms. Bachmann was acting like a, well, like a Repubican.

As for gender, Michelle Bachmann is indeed a lady, a good looking lady – and a disgusting one at that.

I'm a Republican, but actually think I agree with the democrat Senator. Asking her to act like a lady is the same thing as asking a man to act like a gentlemen. I don't see how what he said is sexist.

It is very annoying to watch someone in these debates dominate the conversation, and not allow the other person to share their view...even if it is a view I don't agree with.

Does Arlen Specter even know where he is? Calling all nursing homes! It's ok Michelle, the democrats are still in shock and awe after Brown's victory in Mass. This will probably be Specter's last year in office.
