A majority of Americans oppose the economic stimulus program championed by President Obama and passed by a Democratically-controlled Congress, according to a new national poll out Sunday.

Washington (CNN) - A majority of Americans oppose the economic stimulus program, according to a new national poll.

Fifty-six percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Sunday say they oppose the stimulus package, with 42 percent supporting it.

Full results

Last March, just weeks after the stimulus bill was signed into law by President Barack Obama, a CNN poll indicated that 54 percent of the public supported the program, with 44 percent opposed.

The program, formally known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, attempts to stimulate the country's economy by increasing federal government spending and cutting taxes at a total cost to the government of $787 billion. No Republicans in the House and only three in the Senate voted in favor of the bill.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted January 8-10, with 1,021 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

and the numbers don't lie. look them up and review which president is responsible for the billionaire bailout. the sad thing in this country is that the club for growth mentality has created a mental block for the populace. this banking bailout was put together years before.

greenspan knew what was coming and got the hell out before it all went down. bernanke was brought in for a reason and so was the goldman saks board. when bush and the republicans forced credit card reform down our throats it was a huge and ominous gift to the financial sector. instead of finding a way to help americans understand what our personal spending habits could do to everyone, they decided to let us live in ignorance while they were busy setting up safety nets for the elite power brokers of wall street.

obama's big mistake in all of this was to put geitner in charge of what was left of the lame duck bush giveaway. why not stimulate americans by paying down the debt of individuals instead of giving it away to billionaires who bet the house? we're supposed to just give them all the money and expect they will toss a few scraps our way? they don't care about us, and we should not cede what little power we the people have as one group of lobbyists. the worse thing for the american people to do now would be to play into the hands of the chamber of commerce once more. if the recent supreme court decision didn't clear things up for most of you then you will never be able to see the sharks swimming beneath the surface. they never sleep.

Had we let Wall Street collapse and given the first stimulus money to Main Street, the economy would have recovered much faster. This trickle down economy theory does not work as long as people are still born with the selfish gene.

Main Street existed way before Wall Street was born. This is like the pre-flight training we have to go through each time. Put the air mask on yourself first before you assist your kids. That is exactly what Wall St. did, they invested the bailout money by buying out other banks and treasury bills, but offer no credit to Main Street. Had we reversed the order of help, once Main St. is healthy, there will be the need to grow Wall St. The trickle down economy theory will not work till we are genetic re-engineered.

What impatient hypocrits people are. Bush Jr. ended his first FOUR years with a net loss of jobs, and record deficits due to his misguided tax-cuts-for-the-rich stimulus. At the end of his eight years he plunged our country into an even bigger recession. Now people expect Obama to have fixed everything within a single year? Hypocrisy!

Ron , If I recall the stimulus package would have been bigger if not for the Republican opposition. It was pared down in order to pass.

What stimulus program? Very few Americans have seen any stimulus program. In fact a very small portion of the stimulus program has been actually put into action. I believe American's are disappointed the stimulus program hasn't been enacted faster.

I am certain if McCain would have been elected to the office of President, American's would have been thrust deeper into the abyss of job loss and had absolutely no way to climb out. McCain would have then pressured the public and lawmakers to enact the military Draft as a way to hire willing individuals to fight in the many additional foreign wars that he and his administration would create.

McCain's answer to the Health Care plan was a $5,000 dollar voucher! Big Corporations OWN the Republican Party and their interests run contrary to lower and middle class American's needs, desires and values.

I just got a job because of the Federal Stimulus Package. I am an electrician who is now working on the remodel of a building at a solar panel manufacturing facility. This job is being paid for by Federal Stimulus money.

Don't believe the lying Republicans and hyper-partisan FAUX "news."
The Federal Stimulus Package IS putting people back to work.

LOL, if this isn't proof Americans are uninformed, what else do you need. Without the stimulus, the stock market would have stayed in the toilet and unemployment would be at least 5% higher than now.

What if you borrowed 90% to buy stock and put 10% down. You buy it at $100 a share. The stock drops to $80 a share. Should you declare bankruptcy and walk away because your stock is underwater?

Or should you wait for a bit until it is back in the black? This nonsense about people leaving their homes that are underwater is silly. Sane people don't give up their 10% because their house is for the time being worth less than what they owe on it. Prices go up and they go down. They'll go up again. It is only if you buy a house with the view of owning it for two or three years that you'd want out. If you live in the thing, who cares what the external market says? A house is a home, not just an investment.

The Dems always think they can spend your money better than you can. They aren't concerned with all the waste and fraud that occurs once government gets their hands on the money and trys to redistribute it. I'll bet for each dollar they take in they are left with 50 cents for worthy programs.

Republicans are sure a funny bunch. Stimulus package under Obama that actually has saved millions of jobs: bad! A near-trillion dollar bank bailout that was abused by banks and saves the jobs of only the corrupt CEO's: good. Republicans had no vocal opposition passing that bank bailout in October of 2008, YES, under Bush Jr.'s watch! Oh, but somehow that bank bailout was also Obama's fault because... he can travel back in time?

I love how socialism is being used as the buzzword by nearly everyone who hates Obama. I bet half of them don't even know what the word means or realizes how it doesn't apply here. It's just a plot to get Republicans back in power as far as I'm concerned. Obama has made one big mistake that was noted last week when the Rep won the senate seat. He needs to stop taking the high road the keep reminding people that it was their beloved Republican administration that got everyone into this mess that they're trying to dig out of, and the Republicans of today are doing all they can to stop the repair work. Who cares of the Democrats controlled the houses during Bush. Bush still had veto power and it was Bush who OK'd the decisiion to pump tons of money into the wrong war. If Obama gets defeated in 2012 by a Republican that Republican will be still fixing Bush's mess, guaranteed. Read the pundits and you'll see a lot of them saying the stimulus needs to be bigger, not smaller. And frankly if the money is going into American pockets that means it's coming back in taxes later, doesn't matter where it goes. That's better than dumping it all into Iraq.

folks, let's not usher in the era of american corporate fascism in an effort no to appear as socialist. any smart man or woman in business will tell you that a company will not succeed without adapting to "best practices". that means you have to way the good vs the bad and how it will affect the future. the mccarthyists have blood on their lips once more and they are vicious vampires. don't allow them to continue to drain the nations lifeblood.

Wow. I think that 56 percent is a conservative number. I do not know anyone, ANYONE, who is in support of more spending of this nature. Mr. President, I have got news for you! You certainly are out of touch with the will of the American people. If you are going to lead America, then you are expected to represent America! This plan is not going to create jobs! If you want to create jobs, turn the water back on in the midwest. If you want to create jobs, lower taxes for businesses and bring jobs back into the country. If you want to create jobs, tap our onshore oil resources. If you want to create jobs, give businesses incentives to hire more employees, and it is not done by increasing taxes on small and mid siszed businesses. You can start by giving back all of the money you stole from us. Yeah, we're not stupid!

Its 14 months after the election. At some point the excuse that Bush caused all our problems must be relenquished. Excuses are for losers and Obama is not a loser. A lot of the other leaders in his party are, but he needs to move past this whole blame Bush saga and do something.

The political struggle is not between Republicans and Democrats. It is between Conservatives and everyone else. Conservatives make up 100% of Republican politicians and about a third of Democrats. That gives Conservatism a majority of both houses of congress. That is why nothing has been accomplished. The Conservative strategy is block, talk, stop, talk, prevent, talk, obfuscate, talk, divert, talk, distort, talk, minimize, talk, exaggerate, and talk endlessly until nothing is ever accomplished. Republican Conservatives are open about their disloyal opposition. Democrat Conservatives are more inclined toward subterfuge. They just delay when they can and put stuff in the bill that will make it unpalatable to the other house.

About a third of Democrats are professional politicians who have a really cool job with super benefits, great retirement, superb medical insurance, plenty of bribes for the taking, lots of pretty girls, and endless applause. They are for and against everything and anything.

About a third of Democrats are Liberals who would like to solve the nation's problems.

getreal-Obama said that the 800 billion dollar stimulus, falsely renamed by Obama as the reinvestment and recovery act, would create between 4 and 5 million jobs and keep unemployment below 8%. It failed miserably to create jobs. Instead, Obama's first "jobs" bill, the failed stimulus package, went to predominately blue states and corporations who supported Obama during the election, with over a third not scheduled to be spent intil 18 months after its passage. Just before the 2010 November elections. Ironic huh? Now this President, who is to stupid to understand economics 101, wants to spend more borrowed money from China to go back to the same old failed economic policies he stupidly signed into law a year ago. But he does have the support of the 21% who call themseves liberals, but NOT the rest of the country who are able to think for themselves.

I bet most of the "Democrats" on this site are CNN employees, as they usually get the majority of "air" time on this website, with some people getting in a dozen comments and others getting none at all. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. Shame on CNN.

President Obama is having to fight to change the current status, against corporate American, banks, wall street, republicans and many democrats who want to keep "Corpacracy "to remain.
Have you notice this website and the news have not discussed the changes the supreme court ruling that gives corporate American the ability to donate as much as they want to back a candidate? This means they can buy rulings, pay for elections and change any ruling they anything that benefits them and continues to destroy the middle class. This is not democracy this is the beginning of the end..... for us. Corporate American can now buy schools as well as the news media. I wonder if they haven't already purchase the news. The news would rather talk about Tiger Wood and John Edwards affairs than changes that will effect our every day lives in a meaningful way. Scary.
Why aren't jobs being return here to this country. Corporations can outsource and it's legal, we can't outsource to purchase cheaper medicines because it's illegal. See?

Socialism is a preferred word here in the USA, when things become iffy, here is that word. Obama is not a socialist, he likes to ride in Airforce 1 too much. He thinks he is a millionaire, since he is in office, he behaves worse then Cheney, because he thinks airforce 1 needs no fuel and we stupid voters will vote for him again. He better chances his ways, because in 3 years it will be over for him. What will be said then about him, I can tell you, we will say, we should have voted a white president in, or Hillary, because he behaved like many others of his color, wasting money for nothing. I wonder if he has an account at the Cayman Island.

Make no mistake. Bush was practicing stimulus all day long except he didn't call it a stimulus, and it went to a different section of the economy: rich people and big businesses, and the people who lived off of the war (Halliburton etc...) That's how we ended up with $250 billions in debt. The american people are funny that way. I didn't hear anybody gripe about fearing taxes to pay for the stimulus down the road, while our government poured our taxpayers money down the drain. Go figure!
