A majority of Americans oppose the economic stimulus program championed by President Obama and passed by a Democratically-controlled Congress, according to a new national poll out Sunday.

Washington (CNN) - A majority of Americans oppose the economic stimulus program, according to a new national poll.

Fifty-six percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Sunday say they oppose the stimulus package, with 42 percent supporting it.

Full results

Last March, just weeks after the stimulus bill was signed into law by President Barack Obama, a CNN poll indicated that 54 percent of the public supported the program, with 44 percent opposed.

The program, formally known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, attempts to stimulate the country's economy by increasing federal government spending and cutting taxes at a total cost to the government of $787 billion. No Republicans in the House and only three in the Senate voted in favor of the bill.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted January 8-10, with 1,021 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Uhh – Maybe it's because it has not done what it was sold to do.

If you apply the same rules to this that the Dems applied to Bush – then OBAMA LIED.

This is all being done on purpose people. Do you actually believe that the Dems didn't know that this "plan" wouldn't work. Come on.

Example: How did $80,000,000 to the NEA to make porn create any jobs, Not counting the actors of course.

Until the American people rise and throw these bums out, this is going to do nothing but continue.

I was not a fan of Candidate Obama but when he propsed the Stimulus I said ok let's see what this is/I did not expect it to work over night/although with the speed that was indicated it needed to pass in order to keep the unemployment rate down, I said ok by end of summer something should give with all of these shovel ready projects, etc. Now I am glad it saved some jobs but it was touted as a plan that would create jobs. It did not
I am sorry in the end it was payback/had this POTUS help to craft the bill rather than turn it over to Congress this may have been avoided/some of the money has gone to non-existent places. Same was done with HC/Look the Repubs are no heroes here either but it seems the biggest challenge for this POTUS is the Dem Congress
Last all I will say is this POTUS is no longer campaigning, he needs to govern now/he is not the President of the Democratic party,he is the POTUS he needs to start to act like it

Stimulus equals tax monies stolen by and turned over to the political mafiosos who surround the puppet of Rahm Emanuel,Andy Stern & others Zionists and their global bankers like Goldman Sachs.
    Enough already!

If Obama had gone at the economic catastrophe left by Bush in the public spirited way Republicans approach things he would have simply let the economy crash and burn. Then it would have taken a decade or more to recover.

Actually, that's exactly the way the Republicans did approach things during the Great Depression. What a heckuva job.

Maybe just maybe you did not poll people who were to freakin busy working 3 minimum wage jobs to keep the bank from taking their home to have time to answer your survey. Those are the folks my President is working for and if he thinks we need another stimilus passage then let's have one... BTW Dems 59 Senators is only a minority if you act like one. Remember Bush lied and took us to war in Iraq with less than 59 Senators in his own party. Surely you could get us some health-care. Don't let the "threat" of fillibuster guide you. Do the right thing and let them explain why they are in your way. Otherwiuse you don't desrerve the majority we have given you.

Funny these reports never tell us the actual question asked.
I've taken many surveys by phone and frankly find the question stilted.
Seldom is there an answer I'm really comfortable giving.
If asked if the Stimulous is working, most would say no. If asked if they knew that more than 50% of the money has not yet been allocated the number would probably be 70% no.
Or they will ask – Do you see any change on the economy from the 878 Billion dollar Stimulous? Answer again- no, but they have not seen 878 Billion spent yet either.
Polls are fairly useless when gaging what most of us think.

And do you know why 56% of the people oppose and 44% support....lets see...do the math.....40% of the low life's in this county do not pay any taxes, that's why. This is another layer of eventual tax to the taxpaying citizens, so we can support all of the non-working, government subsided people that live off of the hard working, tax paying citizens of this country. It's disgusting.....

Ok Enough. They don't even claim the stimulus package created/saved millions of jobs...so why would anyone here claim that it did? And spreading the wealth and capping failure at the expense of capping success is socialism. It's not a word or concept the GOP just invented.

CNN polls are often skewed as most polls can be by the very nature of their questions or the intent of their polling. We often forget is that media networks and polling have a tendancy to skew public opinion. The stimulous program has been maligned so badly by so many, but I have seen numerous signs of what good the stimulous program has done and is doing for communities. While many politicians are happy to claim and the collect the credit and congradulations for bringing the stimulous money home to their constituents they spend their time in the media raving about how bad the program is.

First, CNN really asks loaded questions in it's polls. Need to find some more honest and fair wording. Often, one doesn't feel they relate to the options offered, so to answer is to lie, essentially. Why this is important is because they then make a huge story out of it so every single day we see pessimism in their story lines. This is especially the case in the E section of the site.
Now having said that, the Dems are indeed suffering because, having this Golden opportunity to fix this mess, albeit a multi layered and complex disaster the Repubs left behind, they've only proved they are the same and no different from the Repubs, The supreme court is no different than congress or the executive branch when it comes to deep rooted wide spread corruption and there really is almost nothing we can do about it.
So what republicans will win in 2010 and possibly 2012, so we'll go back to the last decade of power corruption and lies on a worst scale than we can imagine, especially with the supreme court twisting the constitution to accomodate the republican/Corporate Agendas of Power Stealing.

Like they say, the only polls that matter are taken in the voting booth. And current voting booth "polls" seem to indicate that the American public is not buying this administration's proposals or "solutions."

Which would YOU rather have...tax dollars spent on infrastructure in the U.S., or some bogus war(s)...take your pick:

    A) Republicans = spend tax dollars on needless wars that are killing our soldiers; or

    B) Democrats = spend tax dollars on upgrading the infrastructure right here at home.

You can't have it both ways...

According to my local unemployment office, college students who default on student loans due to economical circumatances cannot qualify for job training programs: It's a harsh Catch 22. That means we have potential scientists out there flipping burgers for a living, with no hope of ever fulfilling their potential.

when your house gets on fire, what do you do? do you stand by and keep others who try to put the fire down " it is not going to work! you cannot do it, you socialist!" and keep calling names. what is wrong with you, people??? do you love your country or not? Or you think about your party only? Let's get to work. let's help our president to clean up the mess created before. STOP at once and get to work. Otherwise we will become the third world country, as the there is less and less people that can think and analyse. SHANE on YOU all the world is lloking at us and is laughing.

This poll is very misleading. A good percentage of this 56% opposed to stimulus are against it because it just might work.

Another outcome of this poll is that 42% of Americans are COMPLETE MORONS. If that many think that trillion dollar pork barrel spending spree did ANYTHING of substance to help the economy then this country needs to revamp our education system!

Only a total idiot would believe the government can borrow and spend their way out of a recession! Of course, all of this is brought to you by people who have NEVER run ANYTHING like a company and don't understand the first thing about finance.

I voted for Obama but he has disappointed me. First, as President of the United States of America, elitist or not, he should have immediately checked Joe Wilson in front of Congress and the world in that moment last year! After all, he's the Leader of the Free World and his Office requires respect. Period. So, after I saw the way Obama handled that incident, I lost a little interest for him after allowing himself to be disrespected by that man! We're not picking cotton anymore so Joe and the rest of the gang need to get it! Pick your own daggone cotton! Obama and the Dems have been in control for a year and still cant get a healthcare bill passed. So this senate loss in Mass is not the reason healthcare won't pass – it's the lack of leadership and the politics as usual that derailed healthcare. What have they been doing for a whole year?! Obama said he could multi-task, but what tasks have those been? Another do-nothing administration and congress! The Republicans are no better. They whine and complain – they got us in this mess and true to form, they have no ideas of their own. The interesting thing about American politics is that none of the folks we send to Washington ever do anything for the rest of us. What kind of stimulus helps the very banks that caused this problem. A true capitalist society recognizes that some business will fail. Period. Give taxpayers a few hundred dollars in stimulus but give the banks billions!! And wonder why the economy still sucks! Both Bush and Obama are poor leaders! And the ideas coming out of Washington are the ideas of short-sighted men and women who can only see as far the next election.

All the talk out of the Whitehouse is that they continue to pretend that all the polls that show a majority of voters opposing just about everything that Obama and the Dems are doing don't show oppositon or pretend they don't exist. They pretend that the Brown win in Mass shows that he was voted in by the same agner that sent Obama to the Whitehouse and shows that the people want Republicans to support what Obama and the Dems are doing. In short Obama and the Dems are not going to back off from their liberal progressive agenda and move to the center. They are going to continue to ignore the voice and the will of the people. After the 2010 elections Obama is going to be looking at a Republican controled House and Senate. And between now and then he is not going to get enough votes from Blue Dogs to pass any liberal bills. Obama is done.

The stimulous packages don't work its quite obvious by our economy and loss of more jobs. Obama needs a new strategy hey maybe the Bush tax cuts, at least it will give everyone an incentive to invest again.

The shocking thing about this poll is that The DC Democratic Political Machine can convince 42% of these Americans to support something that failed. I'm in awe of their capability to control the mass mind through the spin. These people are masters of their art!

I work in federal facility that received almost 1 billion in stimulus money. all the government did was reduce our normal budget by the same amount as the stimulus and then claimed they saved jobs. What a load of crap.

What the President, Democrats and Liberals need to understand is the American people wanted the economy fixed. The dollar amount scared them (us) of this bill. The President and Democrats told us if it didn't pass we would see 10%+ unemployment. If it did pass it would top off at 8%. Don't make promises you can't keep. Then they tell us all the jobs it created yet couldn't prove it. In fact most data shows it didn't and most jobs were temporary and almost all were government jobs. The President and the democrats lied to us saying it created jobs. Now their mantra is it saved jobs. Which is it? On top of that the President told us "no more pork" yet this stimulus was overloaded with it. What part of we don't like it don't they understand. I realize things can't change instantly but don't tell us it will and then tell us we are impatient when it doesn't. You can't have both. Stop campaigning, you won the election. Now fix this for real.
