(CNN) – It is striking that President Obama has just made strong assertions that the stimulus plan of last year has saved or created two million jobs and has been a great success. But a CNN poll that just came out of the field found that over half of all Americans oppose the stimulus plan and three quarters think huge amounts have been wasted. What is the disconnect here?

Everything he says is a disconnect as every one of his promises costs money we don't have. He's pandering to every special interest group in the country.
The disconnect? you have some gall. The media - you, CNN - covering Britney and MJ and all the other non-entities rather than educating the public on the things that actually matter.
There is no disconnect on stimulus. The president is correct, the stimulus worked, but you wont get results immediately. People are just impatient.
The President is talking about ACTUAL jobs ceated by the stimulus and Mr. Gergen is referencing a POLL? A poll?
I think David Gergen is disconnected on stimulus.
The disconnect is that people are listening to Republicans/Tea Baggers who make them fear that every dollar spent by the government is going to ACORN or a drugged-out welfare mother. The disconnect is that Republicans refuse to tell the truth, or give any credence to those who do.
The disconnect is that the "media" talk it down and perception is everything. Why Gergan, haven't you watched Cafferty ( I mean Mr. I'm turning into Lou Dobbs) file lately?
Mr Gergen, would it be possible to look at someone else poll for more creditability? I have read more than one article stating that it has helped and where we would be with out the stimulus. Mr. Gergen, I have not heard you discuss this aspect. Also, How was the question ask and to whom was the sample given? That way if we see the question, we can judge how the answer was given.
The problem is most people don't know jack about the stimulus. The stimulus has been able to sustain jobs as well. No one reports on this. What about the police force in Ohio that kept their jobs because of stimulus. This didn't create jobs but it kept jobs. What if those jobs were lost? How many more jobs would have been impacted? That is the true measure.
The honest truth is that there are jobs out there. The problem is some people expect a job to come to them or won't relocate.
Perhaps the American people listen too much to the hype and exaggerations from the mainstream media. Most of the coverage is always about the problems in the country and hardly any on the progress that is going on. No wonder people are negative. Pres. Obama is giving an amazing speech. Imagine what kind of speech John McCain would be giving right now because the country would be in a depression, you would also be at war with Iran and the unemployment rate would be in the teens. Thank God that the election last year turned out the way it did.
The disconnect is his arrogance.
The disconnect is that virtually all Americans get their news, and thus their views, form large, conservative corporations.
I guess if you happen to be one of obama's numerous czars that got hired on or an ACORN member than you might have something to say about the obama stimulus helping you out, but for the rest of the millions who are out of work, homes and food it doesn't sit too well that we're doing just fine when we're not.
The disconnect comes not from the American people but from obama on down when they are spending tax dollars wastefully like Nancy Pelosi 1.1 million dollar trip to Copenhagen last month. Why it that WE have to watch our pennies while they spend our dollars?
Typical Obama. A long winded speech of feel good promises that will last only as long as the teleprompter is on.
I can't believe he is STILL trying to blame Bush. He's increased the debt 5x what it was when he took office. The gov't own website has admitted more than once that their numbers, projections are off.
The stimulus hasn't worked. More jobs have been lost than created on Obama's watch. The economy is worse because of the unwanted liberal policies that he, pelosi and reid of been forcing through.
He won't get anything done because he has alienated republicans, not listening to anything they have to say. He's ticked off the far left that got him elected because he hasn't kept his promises to them. His actions, and pelosi's have shown the american people he cannot be trusted. It's all about him (his ego) and their agenda. His done.
It is good to hear David Gergen has a 'fair and balanced' viewpoint on
Obama's failed attemp with his stimulus package! Believe me out
here in the middle of the country we are no longer buying his great
speech giving messages and we now all realize he is full of himself and has nothing for us but bull and more bull.......
We are not going to buy his populist views of beating up on Wall Street, Insurance Companies, CEOs, people making over $250,000, etc. He is just an empty suit..............
The disconnect stems from research and facts. How many of the people who oppose the stimulus and think the money was wasted got their facts from credible sources? Until a number can be generated i'll take President Obama at his word.
Obama talks about change. The only change that would be good for the country is if Obama practices the George Contanza philosophy. Every instinct he has for the country and policy – He should do the exact opposite. Then we'd all be better off.
It's true that federal intervention has saved and created many jobs. Ask any illegal alien.
The disconnect is the sequela of a reliance on a poll (that of CNN as you so boldly point out) conducted by a partisan press organization over well conducted studies, and deep-sixing of accurate data emerging from sophisticated data mining bodies offered us by the federal government. Economists have at large revealed that the effects of a stimulus plan have lagged in every recent recession. Expectedly, this recession will play out and respond at comparable rates of recovery. Unemployment lags, and is of those indicators defining recession, one of the last to be shored up by any roborant intervention. The stimulus will work. An impatience compounds the disconnect you speak of. A doggedness to incorrect arguments and remote truths posited by news desks widen it.
if he believes his own words on this stimulis, he is living in a dream world or listening to rahm
The disconnect is some in the media act like the stimulus was a bad idea and to me most Americans dont know too much about what the stimulus did,
