Iran pursuit of nuclear arms 'unacceptable,' says Obama

Iran 'continue(s) to pursue a course that would lead to (nuclear) weaponization and that is not acceptable,' President Barack Obama said Tuesday.
Iran 'continue(s) to pursue a course that would lead to (nuclear) weaponization and that is not acceptable,' President Barack Obama said Tuesday.

Washington (CNN) - Iran "continue(s) to pursue a course that would lead to (nuclear) weaponization and that is not acceptable," President Barack Obama said Tuesday. "We have bent over backwards to say we are willing to have a constructive conversation" with Iran about its nuclear program, he said in a surprise appearance at the White House daily press briefing.

Now the United States and its allies are "developing a significant regime of sanctions that will indicate to them how alone they are," he said. Obama said negotiations on proposed sanctions for Iran "are moving along." But one of the difficulties of dealing with Iran, Obama added, is that "it's not always clear who is speaking on behalf of the government" in Tehran. The president indicated there are signs Iran is still pursuing nuclear weapons.

"The door's still open" to discussions with the Iranian government, he added. But "we are going to be looking at a variety of ways" in the weeks ahead to show the Iranian regime its current approach is unacceptable, he said.

Is it more unacceptable than it was a year ago? I know it's now more inevitable.

It's quite refreshing to see the current President pursuing sanctions against this rogue nation. Iran has been developing their nuclear program all through the 8 years of the Cheney/Bush administration, but they convinced the American public that Iraq was our threat, giving Iran an extra 8 years to develop nuclear weapon capabilities. Such was the Cheney/Bush administration's years of false fears to control minds and win elections.

    What does that mean?

Does it mean anything to Iran? That's who it should mean something to, but I don't think Obama's words carry much weight with Iran (or anyone else for that matter).

"we have bent over backwards to say we are willing to have a constructive conversation" I guess now you know what George Bush was dealing with for 8 years, while you and your ilk criticized him for not engaging Iran in discussions. You really accomplished a lot by bending over backwards, and frontwards, and every which 'wards you could with terrorist backers, and dictators around the world. Cuba, Venezuala, and Iran still mock you and threaten us along with the rest of the world. What happened, I thought everyone was going to love us and do whatever you thought they should just because you were not George Bush. After all, Bush was the problem, right? It couldn't possibly that there are unbalanced, dictators and zealots leading nations elsewhere, right? You are a babe in the woods surrounded by wolves.

    Hahahahah....Barack is a clown....

He is the same as Jimmy Carter back in the 80's.....

Pretty funny how Iran turned over the hostages once Reagan became President. They were actually scared of Reagan.

It appears now that the arrogant Barack and his idea of talking his way with Iran was just that "arrogant talk".. Apparently they are not scared of you barack and see you as the wimp that you are.

Putin owns you, the Iranian leadership owns you, they all see you as a wimp...

Uh Oh, Obozo is upset at Iran (not really, he just has to pretend to be when deep down he and Achmenijad share a common goal which is to hurt America) I sense another strongly worded letter and sanction threats coming on. Hell, if it doesnt work after the first thousand attempts maybe on the thousand and first it will. LOL OBOZO is very unqualified, very reckless and extrenmely clueless to hold the job of POTUS. He should go back to organizing community kickball games in the ghettos of Chicago.

Wow. Obama's a genius for figuring out that you can't talk with this regime. Not only is he the most liberal, anti American president in history–he also has the ignorance of a 5 year old. I am baffled that anyone voted for him

what would Iran benefit from developing a nuclear weapon and what will sanctions do but make the Iranian regime recoil and kick out the IAEA inspectors out and then the world will truelly be clueless about Iran's nuclear program. If I am not mistaken all the IAEA reports to date have indicated that Iran's nucluer work is peaceful therefore vindicating the Iranian regime of these false allegations.....WTF is Obama, Netanyehu and the rest of these folks that keep saying Iran is developing nuclear weapons, where are they getting their information from?

I say that we level sanctions of anything remotely connected with a nuclear program which includes computers and electronic research equipment. I am personally in favor of having supporters hire people to "confiscate" possible materials that are being shipped into Iran. Any ship could hold these various materials; therefore all need to be stopped and inspected. If the inspections get violent and sink the ship, all I can say is that accidents happen.

If it's not acceptable, then BOMB their facility on Feb 11th. That would show that you mean business.

Why is acceptable that any country, let alone one guilty of war crimes like Israel, has any nukes? Why not get rid of them all? Also get rid of the lies which constantly are invoked before the bombs, missiles and invasions begin. Iran has no nukes and signed the nonproliferation treaty. There were no WMDs in Iraq just as there are no nukes in Iran. Truth is the first casualty in war. Stop it.

Last summer the Beloved Leader set a deadline of October 1, 2009, to come to a deal with Iran. Remember that? Now, he says that we are "developing" sanctions, but "it's not always clear who is speaking," i.e., an escape hatch to do nothing, and "the door's still open" to discussion.

This discussion will end when either (1) Israel believes it has no choice but to act on its own and preemptively attack Iran to forestall its nuclear program, or (2) when we have a new administration, whichever occurs first.

Regardless of Irans' stand that it wants nuclear tech. for energy/peaceful purposes. It can't happen. Material can be weaponized with a reactor. This is the reality we live in. Regardless who builds it; inspects it; or anything otherwise. We need no new nukes on this planet!
