Edwards' spokeswoman denies story on marriage proposal

Former Sen. John Edwards' spokeswoman flatly denied a story in the National Enquirer Wednesday.
Former Sen. John Edwards' spokeswoman flatly denied a story in the National Enquirer Wednesday.

Washington (CNN) - Former Sen. John Edwards' spokeswoman flatly denied a story in the National Enquirer Wednesday that claimed the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee is engaged to his mistress, Rielle Hunter.

The Enquirer reported that Edwards proposed to Hunter on the day he told her that he would publicly acknowledge being the father of their child, Frances Quinn.

Edwards was taking steps to run for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination when he began his affair with Hunter, a videographer. The former senator denied that he was the father of Frances Quinn for more than a year, but he acknowledged paternity late last month.

Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, have legally separated.

"John has said that when his divorce is final, he'll buy her a diamond ring," the Enquirer quotes a 'close source' in the story as saying about the marriage proposal. "But in the meantime, he's getting them a house."

But Joyce Fitzpatrick, an Edwards spokeswoman, said in an e-mail to CNN that the report was "absolutely untrue."

The Enquirer broke the story of Edwards' affair with Hunter as well as his being the father of Frances Quinn.

A federal grand jury is investigating payments the former senator's campaign and supporters made to Hunter, who worked as a videographer for Edwards as he prepared for his 2008 presidential campaign.

Andrew Young, a former Edwards' aide complicit in helping the former senator hide the affair, revealed in his new tell-all book "The Politician" that prosecutors peppered him with a number of questions regarding the payments made to Hunter.

"I sat in the witness chair, and as the men and women of the grand jury scrutinized me, the prosecutors pressed me for exact information about checks that were written, the way the money was used and the timing of events," Young wrote. "They wanted names, dates, and amounts in very specific terms."

Just when you think you have all the scum off the shower stall, and you then you find a new area of scum to de-sanitize. Edwards-I hope that God shows you as much mercy and grace as you have to your wife!

Just like he denied the affair and then denied that Rielle's baby was his. Elizabeth is far better off without this sleeze-ball.

"absolutely untrue" – right. The same denial made by the Edwards camp (and Edwards himself) about the affair AND the baby. Methinks we have a credibility issue here.

Well, as long as he denied the story, it must not be true. The Enquirer staff was correct about the "love" child, so their credibility with regard to John Edwards is ahead of his credibility denying their stories. I'll believe he's telling the truth when he doesn't marry this woman, ever.

Want to bet they get married? And who is Joyce Fitzpatrick and why is she Edwards "spokeswoman" anyway? Edwards has issued a myriad of statements through other people for the past several years which turned out to be all lies so why would anyone put themselves in the position of speaking for him, I would like to know.

John Edwards and Rielle Hunter deserve each other. I imagine John will continue with his standard mode of operation regarding news of his activities. He will continue to deny his engagement to Rielle until he finally admits it on a day of his own choosing. This will probably be on a day where there is a national or international catastrophe so that his admission of the truth will be buried on page ten of the news. I imagine John and Rielle will be a very happy couple. I just hope they spare us from any further attempts at public office.

Edwards is a real class act. I wonder if he's ever heard of "karma"? Both he and his mistress ought to be ashamed of themselves. I wonder what Edwards looks like through the eyes of his children.

Shame on him and Rielle, could they at least wait until Elizabeth dies? All those years, carrying on this affair, maybe out of respect for his wife, he should continue to keep it quiet, he has never had a problem with deceit before. It is a SHAME......

Bahhhhhhhhhhh, this is a hoot. Another marriage – he'll get what he deserves eventually when he looks to one marriage to solve and/or resolve the issues in his other marriage. I love people who seek this solution. And some thought he could run the USA?

The Enquirer was right when they reported the affair, and also when they reported the paternity and Edwards denied it.

The Enquirer, sadly, has more credibility than Edwards!

It states in this article the affair started in 2008, this isn't true, it started earlier than this because the baby was even born before 2008.
Also, just because John Edwards spokesperson flatly denies the latest rumor, what makes them (John Edwards and the spokesperson) think we the public have any reason to believe what they flatly deny. Please!! How many times before have they flatly denied something?
