Edwards' spokeswoman denies story on marriage proposal

Former Sen. John Edwards' spokeswoman flatly denied a story in the National Enquirer Wednesday.

Washington (CNN) - Former Sen. John Edwards' spokeswoman flatly denied a story in the National Enquirer Wednesday that claimed the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee is engaged to his mistress, Rielle Hunter.

The Enquirer reported that Edwards proposed to Hunter on the day he told her that he would publicly acknowledge being the father of their child, Frances Quinn.

Edwards was taking steps to run for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination when he began his affair with Hunter, a videographer. The former senator denied that he was the father of Frances Quinn for more than a year, but he acknowledged paternity late last month.

Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, have legally separated.

"John has said that when his divorce is final, he'll buy her a diamond ring," the Enquirer quotes a 'close source' in the story as saying about the marriage proposal. "But in the meantime, he's getting them a house."

But Joyce Fitzpatrick, an Edwards spokeswoman, said in an e-mail to CNN that the report was "absolutely untrue."

The Enquirer broke the story of Edwards' affair with Hunter as well as his being the father of Frances Quinn.

A federal grand jury is investigating payments the former senator's campaign and supporters made to Hunter, who worked as a videographer for Edwards as he prepared for his 2008 presidential campaign.

Andrew Young, a former Edwards' aide complicit in helping the former senator hide the affair, revealed in his new tell-all book "The Politician" that prosecutors peppered him with a number of questions regarding the payments made to Hunter.

"I sat in the witness chair, and as the men and women of the grand jury scrutinized me, the prosecutors pressed me for exact information about checks that were written, the way the money was used and the timing of events," Young wrote. "They wanted names, dates, and amounts in very specific terms."

It would have been interesting if the Democrats would have elected John Edwards as their candidate and he would have won. Interesting because how would he have blamed the baby on the previous administration? He might have had to hire David Axelrod to construct that spin.

Hmm "Joyce Fitzpatrick, an Edwards spokeswoman, said in an e-mail to CBB that the report was "Absolutely untrue." Didn't Edwards and several Spokepeople say the affair was untrue and Oh, that the baby was not his.....So maybe by saying the report is absolutley untrue, they are actually veryfying the story........a classic!

I know politically and finacially an investigation must be made as to the way tax payers dollars played a part in all of this ugliness, but why is it that no one is talking about the trash that is Rielle. If Edwards get with her, he will really end up in the ditch never to come out again. This woman is crazy, has no conscious and just trash. The baby is adorable and I will be praying for her because she will be scarred having the kind of mother she has. Rielle will never take any responsibility for any of this. Stop talking about the week senator so much and include the other party responsible for this mess.

Edwards is just a plain bad apple just like his counterparts at the GOP sending around the lie of SB-2099 emails but then what do you expect from people that think democracy and freedom are conservative principles.

Why should we believe anything that comes out of his mouth? He has continually lied, and then later admitted those lies as truths. What a scum bag. And to think before all this, I actually would have voted for him if he had won the Democratic nomination. He was the only Democrat nominee that I liked. Thank God I came to my senses and voted for McCain.

It's irrelevant now – the pain he has put Elizabeth Edwards through will hardly be relieved by this CNN gossip column.

Shame on you John Edwards! AND shame on the women (like Hunter) who engage in this process of betrayal.

Too bad Hunter missed out on Psychology 101 that this type of behaviour is enduring and not too long from now, Hunter will be recycled by Edwards for a younger tart.

I suppose if this story is true, Edwards might think it is a way to remain a politician. Marrying the mistress would seem more honorable in a lot of peoples' eyes than leaving it the way it is. I think he still has dreams of one day holding an office. The story would make sense of Elizabeth's legal separation. She seemed ready to try to accept everything and go on until something happened to change her mind. She even visited the child with gifts at Christmas. What might have changed things is Edwards saying he was ready for the altar again.

I'd say at this point the National Equirer has been more truthful about Edwards than Edwards himself has.

Excuse me, but when John Edwards or his staff deny inflammatory allegations, I am almost humored. The arrogance of this man is off the radar screen. I don't care what his future brings, but to those who believed in him and his campaign I must ask why do you continue to defend his disgusting behaviors.

Rielle Hunter is a scumbag. If John Edwards is stupid enough to marry someone who deliberately got pregnant to entrap him; made videos of their sexual encounter(s) without his knowledge; stepped all over his first family including his wife of 32 years; contributed to his political decline after years of hard work; they certainly deserve each other. Hunter is certainly the modern day Monica Lewinsky.

What Edwards should really do is to sue her for sole custody and send her on her way without a dime.

I am sick of women like Rielle who calculate how they can profit by pursing someone elses rich husband. She should be branded with a scarlet letter A.

I'm seriously beginning to think that CNN and the rest of the "news" media basically wear "journalist" underoos and run around pretending to "get to the bottom of things" and "inform the public" and "bring us the truth" like whack-job hyperbolic superhero analogies in the flesh. Do you guys really believe in crap like this or is it some jerkwad upper-echelon manager/executive who sits around his office with Joe LIeberman under his desk all day, ruminating on more ways to exploit the central premise of all "news" media today that the public is so utterly stupid and doe-eyed and slavering for juicy gossip and controversy that you could literally sell us steaming turds as long as you put a partisan spin on it? When all is said and done, and push comes to shove and those steaming turds hit the fan, and people start to realize you're just crack pushers standing on the proverbial corner, we're ALL going to turn on the media...you realize that don't you?

Edwards also denied the child was his on national television. His divorce isn't even final so how more cruel to Mrs. Edwards can you get?
Rielle Hunter is the most discipable gold-diggin' trailer trash there is.
Like we can believe anything Edwards says.
The Enquirer has always been correct about John Edwards.
At this rate of spending on ugly whores while still married, Edwards will be broke pretty soon. How someone so successful could make judgments like this is pathetic.

Yeah, Edwards and his people first denied that Edwards was having an affair, then denied that he was having an affair with a member of his staff, then denied that he was having an affair when his wife had cancer, then denied that he was the father of the baby. OK, sure, i'll believe them this time.
