Edwards' spokeswoman denies story on marriage proposal

Washington (CNN) - Former Sen. John Edwards' spokeswoman flatly denied a story in the National Enquirer Wednesday that claimed the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee is engaged to his mistress, Rielle Hunter.

The Enquirer reported that Edwards proposed to Hunter on the day he told her that he would publicly acknowledge being the father of their child, Frances Quinn.

Edwards was taking steps to run for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination when he began his affair with Hunter, a videographer. The former senator denied that he was the father of Frances Quinn for more than a year, but he acknowledged paternity late last month.

Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, have legally separated.

"John has said that when his divorce is final, he'll buy her a diamond ring," the Enquirer quotes a 'close source' in the story as saying about the marriage proposal. "But in the meantime, he's getting them a house."

But Joyce Fitzpatrick, an Edwards spokeswoman, said in an e-mail to CNN that the report was "absolutely untrue."

The Enquirer broke the story of Edwards' affair with Hunter as well as his being the father of Frances Quinn.

A federal grand jury is investigating payments the former senator's campaign and supporters made to Hunter, who worked as a videographer for Edwards as he prepared for his 2008 presidential campaign.

Andrew Young, a former Edwards' aide complicit in helping the former senator hide the affair, revealed in his new tell-all book "The Politician" that prosecutors peppered him with a number of questions regarding the payments made to Hunter.

"I sat in the witness chair, and as the men and women of the grand jury scrutinized me, the prosecutors pressed me for exact information about checks that were written, the way the money was used and the timing of events," Young wrote. "They wanted names, dates, and amounts in very specific terms."

National Enquirer vs John Edwards...my money is on the Enquirer. They've already been right two out of three times with Edwards. Another prediction...there are more bombshells to be dropped.

The person with the hardest job in the world is John Edward's spokesperson !!! After denying that he had had an affair. After denying that he was the father of his mistress' child. Why would anyone believe this denial.

I just finished reading Andrew Young's book "The Politician." What an eye opener. No one comes out looking good in this book. Edwards, of course, is the worst. But Elizabeth Edwards and Andrew Young and his wife all look really really really bad. No wonder the electorate is disillusioned – regardless of your political beliefs or party affiliation.

The whole political systems is a mess. Greed, ego, power, corruption, game playing, hypocrisy.... on both sides of the aisle. It's no wonder nothing gets done. Unbelievable...

He flatly denied it? Well, he's obviously telling the truth. He's the epitome of good character and honesty. You should believe everything he says!

And why should we believe him this time! Most of the time I do not believe anything that comes out with the source quoted as the Enquirer, but in this case it has more integrity that the person they wrote about!

If there is a denial from the Edwards camp, then it is probably true. Everything Edwards has denied has in fact been true. John Edwards is a terrible liar and he has truly become such a disappointment. What a scumbag.

John Edwards is a disgrace. What goes around, comes around, but in the meantime, his family is put thru the wringer. I feel sorry for Elizabeth, not only is she battling a dread disease, but the heartbreak of an unfaithful husband. It is such a shame, after all they have been thru together, to have it come to this. If Rielle thinks she's headed for Shangri-la with this guy...whoa...think again. Leopards don't change their spots.

John McCain was also engaged to his then mistress while still married to his disable wife. John Edwards is doing exactly the same.

What is it about this philandering men? I must say though that over the last 2 years, 85% of philandering politicians have been members of the Republican party. Yet they are supposed to be the most 'religious' and unaccommodating of the shortfall of others.

And we are left paying the bills for all these hypocrites who can't just keep their pants up!

OMG, I am so disgusted that our country spends any time at all with this. We have people loosing their jobs, and homes. Who cares what this dishonest politician is doing. Do we not have any compassion for his cancer surviving wife and children. If this continues this country, OUR country, will loose all that our forefathers strived to create. I feel such compassion for our children and grand children.

There are many lessons here, but media-wise the lesson is do not tick off the National Enquirer by denying or exerting pressure on them to not publish when they have evidence they are actually right for a change. They will apparently hound you forever if you do.

By the way on I believe the Enquirer on this one. Its really sad when they have more credibility than John Edwards, but thats simply a measure of how far he's fallen.

John, I hope when yuor daughter is old enough, you will use yourself as an example in telling her the story of the "boy who cried wolf" You are probably telling the truth but when you have denied 2 stories the Enquirer posted and they turned out to be true...they could post anything at this point and they have credibility. Thanks to you, the national enquirer is a reliable source of information.

If he and his mistress were to marry, and he is found guilty of those charges, he may go to prison. Remember, he has already bought her and the baby a two-story brick mansion; she WILL have a place to live. She just may have to go back to work, when ALL the money runs out.

As far as those two already being married, in this day and age, it would not surprise me. People don't care about how they hurt others anymore–that's why hell is getting so crowded, but Satan keeps saying,"Come on down!"

Kind of interesting juxtaposition. Everyone makes hay of Sarah Paling nearly having been "a heartbeat away" from the presidency. On the flipside, there was this scumbag..............
