(CNN) - More than a year after President George W. Bush left office, more Americans continue to blame his administration over any other entity for the nation's economic woes, according to a new poll.
In a New York Times/CBS News survey out Friday, 31 percent of Americans said the Bush administration is at fault for the current state of the economy while only 7 percent pointed their finger at President Obama and his team.
An additional 23 percent said the fault lies with Wall Street institutions while 13 percent assign the blame to Congress. Nearly 10 percent said the blame lies with all of them.
In a CNN/Opinion Research poll released last November, the public appeared split on who should be blamed if economic conditions don't approve: 47 percent said Bush and congressional Republicans while 45 percent said Obama and congressional Democrats.
"The public still tends to blame the Republicans for current economic conditions," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "But looking forward is another matter. Americans think the GOP is responsible for getting us into this mess, but they think both parties are responsible for getting us out of it."
The poll, conducted February 5-10, interviewed 1,084 Americans and carries a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
Rightly So! TARP began under Bush. Everything began under Bush! Paulson's giveaway began under Bush! Think about it, banks buying up bad debt from bundled collateralized debt obligations and then blowing up reminds me of not only stupidity but things even worse. These guys couldn't have been that stupid to think that these invented CDO's didn't contain malevolent outcomes. It reminds me of playing HOT POTATO knowing that whoever gets the item will have an uncomfortable moment! These guys invented CDO's and SIV's and so forth, surely, they should have known what the score was. And is it possible that these banksters thought that all of this crap could be absorbed by the large economy should have taken heed like firms as Bear Sterns and Lehman Brothers which do not exist anymore! Stupid is as stupid does and it all started under the George W. Bush administration, the House that Jack built, so goes the nursery rhyme!
Sure it's Bush's fault..just like B Hussin Obama blames him for loosing the seat in Mass. I thought I hear Bush say..death to all those poor people in Haiti as well. I bet ol'George is making it snow in Washington too!
I think these polls are just frivolous. The man in charge now is called Barack Obam and it is his economy to fix. That is why he was voted into power!
blame bush all you want, it aint gonna help
grow up people
you will not be any better after 7 more years of this Owebomination of and administration
learn chinese and start praing toward mecca and we will all be just fine
its best to cling to your guns and religion
no Owebama in 2012
Don't buy it. It's a hack-job of a poll. And the token "Republican" that they quote at the end of the NY Times Article obviously has not been paying attention, or worse, is lying. But she said the right "buzz-words" so she get's quoted. "I'm a republican, so I don't like to go against the party ..." Yeah right.
NYT / CBS has a nasty habit of skewing their population size and not using true samples (like weighting the sample size in favor of registered democrats 2:1 over republicans and independents). That's why their analysis of the last 4 off-season elections have been so awfully skewed from the actual outcomes.
Bush caused the Titanic to sink!
Well, they didn't ask me. Bobo is responsible for the bad decisions he and his administration are making now! Until Bobo realizes that American businesses are the engine that fuels our economy.....we are in serious trouble.
Stop blaming someone else. Do your job.
I might remind you all – War was never declared. Except in W's mind, to get the man that "wanted to kill my daddy".
I'm with the 10% that blame them all, as well as previous administrations and lets not forget the stupid and greedy people on Main St. either. Banks encouraged irresponsible borrowing and people were more than willing to be irresponsible. The real estate market got way out of hand, I could see the writing on the wall. I never realized how catastrophic it would turn out, but it was definately a disaster waiting to happen.
If you keep conducting polls that encourage Mr. Obama you will keep getting the same poor result. It's not helping. The american people know better. The results are not subject to polls...
Duh! Of course Bush is to be blamed!!!
People are getting very tired of Obama blaming others for the bad, and taking credit for the good. Definite one-termer.
This is really a waste of time! Really? I blame both DEMS and REPUBS! The American people in large are still sheep who can not see that the two party system doesn't work and that neither party works for the American people. Dems are pushovers and weak and Repubs are rigid and act like whiney babies when they don't get thier way...although that is an insult to babies! America knows more about American Idol than what goes on in Washington. We need "REAL CHANGE" and that means more political parties! Not this monopoly called "so called democracy" This country is not governed by any president at all. Bush nor Obama has any power. The Senate, The Supreme Court, The Lobbyists, you name it..... These are the people who control Washington and ultimately the American people! WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!! By the way I am a PROUD BLACK WOMAN.
WOW! It looks like a few people actually can remember past last weeks American Idol show. There's hope for our society after all.
How heartening it is that the American people can see through the morass of political propaganda that's bombarding them and conclude that, indeed, the Republicans and their president were in charge when the ship of state hit the iceberg and began it's downward plunge.
I grieve and pity those who would put the extreme right of this party back in power.
The USA was founded in 2000.
Why are people so dumb? This is not Bush's fault. Get over the Bush hatred infatuation and take responsibility for the current administration's actions. The numbers have continued to go down since Obama got into office, where is the accountability?
Can't blame Obama fort his one. He might not be doing as good as a job as he could to get out of it, but he is certainly not the one who put us in it.
Reality check for Democrats: Bush is not up for election in 2010.
This economic situation that we're currently in goes back to 1999, in which Phil Gramm and his wife deregulated the financial services industry, and this lead to a loosening of lending regulations. When Bush came in, the industry convinced the then Republican congress to eliminate all regulatory requirements saying they would regulate themselves. Since the banks no longer had the same regulation as they did in the 30's, which were implemented after the Great Depression, they began lending without any regard to regulation because they knew they could sell-off the loans to Wall Street who was packaging them as bonds that were being rated by rating agencies that were no longer regulated. Then came along AIG, who wanted to get into the party, who created insurance for these bonds, and by guaranteeing 35-1 that everything would go perfectly. Guess what, the rating agencies were corrupt, the banks didn't care, and AIG just cared about the next quarter. Welcome to the free market without any brakes on greed and corruption. There is a reason why they call the game Monopoly.
I hope everyone realizes sooner rather than later that the government is not there to run the economy or our lives.
WHAT EXACTLY DO LIBERALS THINK FREEDOM IS???????????
YES, FREEDOM DOES COME WITH PITFALLS!!!!!!!!
in 2012 and taking down the drapes in the WH, he'll still be blaming Bush. And nobody wants to hear that......they elected him to fix what's wrong but he can't get anything done....this is a leadership issue....
Although do not put much faith in your polls, CNN, I would think the number of holding Bush and the republicans accountable for the diasters they created would be much higher. Perhaps it was the way you worded your questions, as Americans realize that those last eight years almost destroyed our country. And, they realize the republicans are continuing on with their quest of obstruction, destruction, sacrificing us and our country.
There's no denying that Obama inherited a sick economic patient. The question now is, will he cure or kill the patient?
As it should be – 2 unfunded wars, an unfunded tax cut for the upper incomes and an unfunded medicare pharmacy act – most of which came about before the Democrats got control of congress. Yet the rightwing talking point parrots don't want to acknowledge any of it nor do they seem to have ideas to get us out of it – except for their familiar battle cries of 'tax cuts for the wealthy' and 'no'.
