Gingrich touts new "Contract From America"

Washington (CNN) - In 1994, Newt Gingrich and other Republican leaders convinced GOP candidates to sign the "Contract with America," a document of conservative principles that included a pledge the House would vote on these issues.

The contract provided GOP candidates with succinct talking points on the campaign trail – ideas that resonated with a restless electorate – and congressional Democrats were swept out of power that year.

Fast forward to 2010 and Gingrich is promoting a second contract, except the newest incarnation was not drafted by him, party officials or political insiders. The "Contract From America" was organized by the Tea Party Patriots, an organization that describes itself as an advocate for "grassroots-generated, crowd-sourced, bottom-up call for real economic conservative and good governance reform in Congress."

CNN Poll: Who are the Tea Party activists?

The National Taxpayers Union, Regular Folks United and Liberty Central are part of this coalition of about 50 groups brought together by Tea Party Patriots that stand behind the new contract. It will be unveiled at Tea Party rallies on tax day, April 15.

Before it is revealed, the contract must be finalized, and Gingrich urged activists to help winnow the list of 22 policy initiatives under consideration to 10 by visiting the organization's Web site. The proposals range from "Demand a balanced budget" to "No more bailouts."

"It's not the handiwork of me or any public official," Gingrich said in his weekly e-mail column. "It is the genuine voice of the American people. Unlike the current political dynamic, in which the will of Washington is forced on America, this is the voice of America coming to Washington."

    ENOUGH of this Teabagger crap!!!

They are low-information voters with racial issues over the President and they've been organized and manipulated by the GOP. Easily manipulated I would add!

Did you know the original tea party LEFT England because they were sick of it? So if you're gonna spout History then take a note and LEAVE America already and shut up. Or flock to Texas and break off from the country, the rest of us will gladly help you build a mote.

They absolutely stupid to accuse those of us who grasp the concept that we must PAY for our roads, our military, our schools etc. with Taxes – they actually accuse US of being UN-American??? Are you kidding me!?!?

If you're a conservative in this day and age then you need your head examined because there has NEVER been a bill passed by the GOP that was conservative on anything except equal rights for tax paying citizens. Did you know the top FIVE most expensive bills ever passed through congress in HISTORY were all penned by the GOP???

    READ A FREAKIN' HISTORY BOOK!

Giving this "Tea Party" any press coverage or credibility is like handing the wheel of your car over to a drunk redneck who's angry because he put his cigarette out in his own eye and now he wants to go huntin' for wimmin to marry black people to beat.

There was a time when education was respected... and that time has apparently ended with this party.

Newt was the leader in the stepped-up divisiveness that has ruined our government. He is smart, but more so, HE IS EVIL. (Is he related to Dick Cheney? Anybody know??)

I don't think Newt really knows what genuine is. He didn't even know that Richard Reid (the shoe bomber) wasn't an American citizen during a recent interview. Just stay retired, Newt. You're not any help.

Well, his first Contract On America worked well, didn't it? We've been trying to regain our footing ever since the Republicans had their hold on the government.

too bad these same people didn't DEMAND a balanced budget when Bush was president.
Bush came in with a surplus, remember?
Now all of a sudden, ol' Gingry thinks it's time for it to happen.
Who cares wheat he thinks, anyway?
All of the republicans and democrats who didn't want the stimulus to pass, give the money back. GIVE IT BACK. It can be put to better use then to enable your media moments...
Who will be the first to give stimulus money back?

With Gingrich, the teabaggers and the GOP, it's more like a "Contract ON America." Beware the distortions, half-truths and outright lies coming out of their mouths.

It's still the same Contract on America they pushed in '94. And it indeed would be a contract on America: privatization of social security? Anybody who believes in this is either stupid, has an exceptionally short memory, or is an investment banker.

His Contract on America worked so well the last time that he ought to give it another try. The result would probably be the same. The Democrats would win out and Gingrich would again be on the talk show circuit.

Too bad they didn't follow their last Contract with America. Once the Republicans got into power the spending and corruption was out of control.

In the last contract, as I recall, the only one who benefitted from it was Gringrich and his cronies... such as, the year of his birth, 1945, was the last year that retirement began at 65.... and ended whn Newtie was caught with his hand in the cookie jar: he resigned as the Speaker of the House in disgrace. I do not think we need another one.

His last contract with america shut the government down and he used it to try to blackmail President Clinton.

This guy is full of it and for those that think he is for them, shame on you....

That whole fiscal conservative thing went really well during the Bush years. 5 trillion added to the national credit card. I think this country needs a good 10 year depression. Don't worry about me, like the Replublicans running things, I have my money put away, we'll be fine.
