(CNN) – In the weekly Republican radio and Internet address, Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan suggests the upcoming bipartisan meeting on health care with President Obama may not yield the results many Americans are looking for.
"Americans are demanding that President Obama and the Democrats in control of Congress scrap their misguided plan of a government takeover of health care….They want Washington to start over with a step-by-step approach to health care reform that begins with reducing costs and ensures they can keep their current plan if they like it," Camp says. “For those families and small businesses looking for a sign that Washington is ready to wake up and find common sense on this issue, next week’s White House health care summit may not be it."

“Hello, I’m Congressman Dave Camp from Michigan, and I serve as the lead Republican on the House Ways & Means Committee.
“This is a time of economic uncertainty. Tens of millions of Americans are either looking for work or have just given up entirely. They’re looking to Washington for solutions. But instead it seems Washington keeps adding to their problems.
“That’s why Americans are demanding that President Obama and the Democrats in control of Congress scrap their misguided plan of a government takeover of health care. They don’t want a 2,000-page bill that threatens jobs and drives up health premiums; they already have enough challenges to deal with in their daily lives. They want Washington to start over with a step-by-step approach to health care reform that begins with reducing costs and ensures they can keep their current plan if they like it.
“For those families and small businesses looking for a sign that Washington is ready to wake up and find common sense on this issue, next week’s White House health care summit may not be it.
“In fact, right now, Democrats are continuing to work behind closed doors, putting the finishing touches on yet another massive health care bill Americans can’t afford and don’t want.
“If it is like Democrats’ other health care bills, this one will drive up premiums, destroy jobs, raise taxes, slash Medicare benefits, and add to our already-skyrocketing debt.
“But this won’t be just another bill written in secret and signed off on by special interests. Democrats have admitted they are working on an undemocratic plan to jam this bill through Congress and subvert the will of the American people. Democrats themselves are describing this latest maneuver as a “trick.”
“If the starting point for this summit is more of the same backroom deals and partisan bills, then this meeting will likely be a charade.
“From the beginning, Republicans have listened to the American people and offered reforms that lower health care premiums for families and small businesses.
“The bill I and House Republicans proposed last fall implements common sense solutions focused on lowering costs. Our bill ensures nobody will be denied coverage on the basis of a pre-existing condition. It gives states the tools to implement their own innovative reforms. And we put an end to the junk lawsuits that are forcing doctors to practice defensive medicine and drive up the cost of health insurance for all Americans.
“The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office projects that the Republican health care bill would actually lower health insurance premiums across the board by up to 10 percent – about $2,000 per year. The Democrat bills do just the opposite – they increase the cost of health care.
“Just as important, Republicans get the job done without cutting Medicare, without raising taxes, and without piling more debt on our kids and grandkids. All the details of our plan are available at healthcare.gop.gov.
“Republicans remain ready to discuss these ideas with President Obama and move forward in a bipartisan way to lower health care costs.
“But Americans' health care is way too important to risk on a rushed backroom deal that puts federal bureaucrats in charge of your personal health care decisions.
“Instead of hurting small businesses by forcing them to pay new taxes and meet new regulations, our focus should be on lowering their health care costs so that they can expand and hire more workers.
“So in order to have a productive bipartisan conversation on health care, Democrats must first listen to the American people and scrap their massive government takeover of health care. We must go into the summit with a clean slate focused on making health care affordable. That is what Americans are asking for, and that is what Republicans will continue to work for.
“Thanks for listening.”
Just say NO to the dems, they are so lost would take a GPS to find their way.To their social programs just say NO,we do not need or want more welfare queens.
My gosh already saying its a failure before you go to it. That shows how you are not going there with an open mind just going there to fail
Just put both legislation bills on line and let the people decide that's fair don't you agree you don't have to bash the other side
I agree with Rep. Camp that the President is probably not ready for any compromise on basic issues of health care, but rather wants just as much of his own plan as thinking voters will let him have.
We're still talking about the President's childish demand, "well then, I'll settle for just half a pound of chocolates before dinner!"
Rep. Camp, we no longer trust the Republican members of Congress to agree to anything – even their own legislation. Far too many of the GOP caucus have loudly stated that their strategy is to bring down President Obama and that they figure health care reform is where they will accomplish that goal. Consequently, because of the constant negative rhetoric from GOP representatives on all subjects, many of us have left the Republican fold and moved to Independent. For me, that was a tough decision. I worked for Republican candidates for offices from local to national for over 35 years.
And exactly what STEP BY STEP plan are the Republicans proposing? I've never seen anything but NO and OBSTRUCTION for this party of prohibition.
If you have no ideas to place on the table, then SHUT UP.
GOP address talks health care
Translation: If your family can't afford health care insurance, we don't care.
Let me get this straight: the Republicans are ready and willing to discuss ideas, but, five days before the meeting even takes place, they can already tell us that it won't be productive. Umm, what?
You don't speak for me. Scapping the plan and starting over is ludicrious. Republicans had their chances to work to form the bill, they were included in the committees, and they chose not to negotiate in good faith. You have no one to blame but yourselves.
Now democrats – pass the bill, complete with a public option.
The hard core reactionary propaganda machine continues to spew out hatred for the American way of life. Why didn't this fraud take his act to CPAC to propagandize the rest of the neo-fascists?
surely these republicans are not talking about those of us who have no health insurance......I work for a small business....I have no health insurance because we will go under if we pay the premiums the insurance companies are asking. I have a choice.... my job or my health? Just what is it that we have to start all over again with. It's not the government...it's the insurance companies that are taking us to the cleaners. We need a public option. I need an option. The small business that I work for needs an option. All the republicans have to offter is tax cuts and no no no NO NO and more tax cuts. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and over and expecting a different result.
I had jobs for and offered jobs to about 4000 people that would not work ,jobs with good wages and good healthcare. Now they cry the loudest, and the taxpayer will end up "keeping them up".Just does not seem fair to the workers that are needing the tax money taken to keep up the non workers. These non workers have as much as the entry level workers or more, does not seem fair to the worker. One day these workers will decide why not be a non worker.Wish I knew a solution, just do not see it.The worker deserves an advantage over the non worker(jobs available).Maybe a living wage for the worker?
Insurance rates are still increasing just ike the lobbyist planned. Thanks to the Republicans for doing the right thing because I love the increases and it's too bad if you don't have healthcare coverage for you and your family. I've got mine and it's as good as what the people have in Washington.
I'm sure this plan would not be perfect, but I am POSITIVE it will be better than the democrats bill. Want to expand coverage? LOWER PRICES!!!! Don't tax the rich to pay for benefits for the poor! Make health care cheap enough for the average person to afford!
Politicians are so dumb. Especially liberal ones.
Look at the Real Clear Poltiics poll results/site.
Real Clear Poltics takes the poll results from ALL polls-–CNN, ABC, Rasmussen, Gallup, Pew, etc.---and comes up with an average.
Those who are opposed to Obama/Dems health care plan- 52.5%
Those who support Obama/Dems health care plan- 38.3%
The summit hasn't even begun and the GOP is already saying no. Way too predictable...
CNN, if one read your coverage only one would think that the minority party is in the majority and the actual majority party is the minority party. All of your coverage focuses on the GOP. In the ticker alone, the headlines featuring the GOP more than double those addressing the democrats. The same is the case with the TV commentary, especially Stato of the Union. 90% of the time the ranking member as opposed to the committee chairman is called to address an issue. Do the democrats refuse to appear or are they not called. If the latter is true, it is my hope that you would give each party equal coverage. I think this would help to tamp down on some of the anger that will ultimately destroy this nation if not checked.
Lying, fear-mongering, filthy sub-human RepubliCONs. They have no plan but to sit back and watch Americans die. The Right-wing hates Americans and wants them to DIE. They are screaming it in the faces of Americans who are facing financial ruin and having to decide between food or out of control health care premiums for their families. And the Right-wing just sits comfortably in the lap of the insurance giants while they make obscene profits in the middle of a recession. This is why the Right-wing must be eradicated. They support the wholesale slaughter of less fortunate Americans so their corporate masters will continue to financially grease paths of least resistance for them. They are responsible for the annual deaths of 45,000 Americans who die needlessly from lack of medical coverage, a staggering statistic that makes Al-Queda and the Taliban proud.
Wow! The first ever republican healthcare plan! I'm amazed... Wait their plan makes the insurance companies richer. Almost had me fooled.
l aint buying that.Just another delaying tactic. You have confused ignorant and un educa ted Americans who need it most
