Gov. Patrick: 'Unseemly' to root for Obama to fail

Washington (CNN) – A close political ally of President Obama predicted Sunday that critics of the administration who "root for failure" would pay a price because the country faces so many challenges.

"It's unseemly, to use a tactful term, to see so many people – so many people in office – sit on the sidelines and root for failure," Gov. Deval Patrick, D-Massachusetts, said Sunday on CNN's State of the Union. "I think most Americans, no matter what their political background or political party affiliation if they have one, want their president to succeed."

Obama "does not pretend to have all the answers" and has solicited policy ideas from Republicans, Patrick said.

"I think that the American people are going to hold accountable those who simply sit on the sidelines and root for failure," Patrick said. "We can't afford that anymore."

Patrick also said that, in his view, Obama has focused on the issues that matter to the public: health care, job creation, and the economic pain that has gripped the country since late 2008.

Gov. Jim Douglas, R-Vermont, who appeared alongside Patrick on State of the Union, echoed the Massachusetts governor's sentiments.

Douglas told CNN Senior Political Correspondent Candy Crowley that partisan gridlock in Washington bothers his constituents in Vermont.

"We have two major political parties in our country and that's fine," Douglas said. "They have different points of view and the robustness of the political process is that those views come to the table. They're debated and their reconciled. But, ultimately, something has to happen. The work has to be done."

"When you look at Congress – all the bickering, all the inaction – I think the American people are really fed up."
Patrick and Douglas are in Washington to attend a meeting of the National Governors Association, which is chaired by Douglas.

Gov. Patrick just when has Obama really asked republicans anything and really wanted their input on anything? that's a big part of the problem Obama way is his way or the highway period. If he would move to the center instead of way out in left field a lot of us would uphold him more and be willing to go along with him.

Looks like another Republican is going to have to make amends to Lord Limbaugh.

A favorite Conservative subject is a smaller federal government. The usual talking point is that's what the Founding Fathers wanted. The Founding Fathers were not against a strong federal government. What they were against was the centralization of power under any one group. That is precisely what happened under Bush, when the Right controlled all three branches. And its what the Republicans are fighting for again. They keep insisting that anyone who is not a staunch Conservative is somehow a threat to this country. And only hard core Neo-Cons should hold office.

That is an ideology that the Founding Fathers would have found aborhent and would have been completely opposed to.

You liberals disgust me. Obama has had a filibuster proof majority for a year and has accomplished NOTHING. Why, because you dolts wanted to be PC and elect the first black President regardless of how unqualified he was. Now rather than blame his lack of leadership ability, you call Republicans terrorists and racists. Grow up and take responsibility for electing someone who couldn't lead himself out of a paper bag. Do I want our country to fail? Heck no; but Obama's policies are the path to failure. So yes, I opposed his leftist ideas to SAVE our country from an attack of mass PC in 2008. Americans elected an unknown. As Obama's policies have become clear, he's lost most Independents, and as the election of Scott Brown shows, even some Democrats. Only the left stands with him now. And the left IS our biggest enemy; who would reduce the US to a socialist welfare state, and a third world country buried in debt.

If you listen to the repubs, it's obvious they are party first America last. They vote against stimulous then show up when the projects begin. They claim we need health care reform but we must start over. All this means is drag it out until they see if they gain control of the house after mid-terms then they will be totally against reform. They are against spending but would be all for it if spending meant giving their rich buddies more tax breaks. They claim to support more coal production but did not support the miners when it came to black lung and retiree benefits. How can you be a friend of coal and be against the UMWA? And once we win the current Afghan offensive, let's see who they credit. It won't be the current administration. They will talk all day about winning future elections but win asked about fixing America now, they just say NO.

To Republicans, if they're not in charge nobody else will be in charge either. The 'party of no' has effectively sabotaged the government. They claim that this is because the government shouldn't do anything anyway, since they fear and hate all government. Of course, when they're in charge they don't fear and hate it. We get more government and larger deficits than the Democrats would ever dare to try. Liers and hypocrites.

We have a bunch of flag waving republicans who gave Bush everything he wanted and even used the reconciliation to pass the biggest tax cuts for the wealthiest of .Americans and corporations and refused to pay for the illegal war in Iraq and they increased social spending by 30 percent and overall spending by 48 percent and THEN WENT ON A BORROWING SPREE TO INCREASE THE MASSIVE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL DEBT BY 6 TRILLION DOLLARS.

They refuse to pay for the MASSIVE SPENDING SPREE AND NOW TRY TO BLAME OBAMA FOR MESS THE COUNTRY IS IN.

THEY SAY THEY SUPPORT THE WARS AND ARE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISTS BUT DID MADE THE SITUATION WORSE BY LETTING SUCH THINGS AS ABU GHARIB, AND TORTURE BE A RECRUITING TOOL FOR THE TERRORISTS AND THEY WERE JUST AS BAD BY ADOPTING THE TERRORISTS TACTICS.

SINCE THEIR PRESIDENT WAS A FAILURE, THEY WANT OBAMA TO FAIL SO THEY CAN HAVE SOME KIND OF SATISFACTION IN THEIR OWN LITTLE MINDS. THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WE CANNOT AFFORD ANY MORE FAILURES.

Granted there are the FEW that hate Obama only because he is black. At the same time there are those who love him only because he is black. Liberals fail to understand that for the most of us it is POLICY!! NOT RACE BUT POLICY!! Liberals wanted Bush to fail because of POLICY. Some liberals are still clamouring for him to go to jail because of POLICY! Ever notice how liberals are always the first play the race card? Look at past tickers and see for yourself! The proof is there!

It is so simple – Obama is (1) incompetent and (2) a socialist. This country was not founded on socialism. It was founded on rugged individualism acted out by principled doers. This does not describe this president and those in the ultra left. "O" and his ilk MUST FAIL!

After a year of a Democrat filibuster proof majority in Washington, a majority of voters has decided they suck and have voted NO on all the Democrats major bills. Including the stimulus, auto bailouts, cap and trade, the increases in budget spending and health care reform.
The Obama's and the Democrat's response is to flip off the voters and declare they are going to fight to go foward with the same rejected agenda. And the Democrats plan to stay in power is to attack Republicans so voters will think they suck more than Democrats. Problem is Republicans have been voting NO on the same bills that the voters have. Voters like that, the enemy of my enemy kind of thing.
The voters chased the Repubicans out in 2006 and 2008 because they did not like what they were doing.
In 2010 the voters will do the same to the Democrats becasue it is clear the Democrats have no intention of doing what the voters want.
My guess is since the Democrats refuse to write bills the majority of voters like, the same majority of voters will want Republicans to try and stop them. And then see if Republicans will listen in 2010 after they restore Congress back to them.

I invite every Republican on this board who is over 65 to give up their medicare and social security and go to your local health insurer and join their plan. Then you can also live off the savings you have instead of social security. I'm guessing you probably lost some money over the last few years because nobody was watching the banks as they invested in some pretty risky stuff. If you don't like govt intervention in your lives, then do what you can and get them out of your lives. Good luck being able to afford that health plan!

People do not want Obama to fail. However, they do not want a lot of the programs he is trying to institute to happen. I liken this to liberals a few years ago who were against the war and people accused them of being against our military. Politics and blind partisanship causes a lot of misunderstanding.
Those that can't understand this are idiots.

Isn't this the same Patrick that quickly changed the law back in Massachusetts to avoid an election for "Kennedy's seat"? He's a party hack and a failure as governor!
