Washington (CNN) – The partisan gridlock gripping Washington endangers already fragile state budgets nationwide, two governors said Sunday.
"We really need Washington to come together, to work on a bipartisan basis and get us out of this," Gov. Jim Douglas, R-Vermont, said Sunday on CNN's State of the Union.
The states are scrambling to fill big fiscal holes for fiscal year 2011, which for most starts on July 1, and face combined budget gaps of $134 billion over the next three years, according to a report released Saturday by the National Governors Association.
"States foresee fiscal year 2011 … to be the most difficult to date, and few see fiscal year 2012 much better," the report stated.
The outlook is made worse by a lack of certainty coming from Washington about how much financial support states can expect from the federal government.
"We get a significant amount of money for Medicaid and other federal programs from Washington and we need to have some … expectation of what those resources are so we can budget in our own states," said Douglas, chairman of the governors association.
Gov. Deval Patrick, D-Massachusetts, who joined Douglas on State of the Union, highlighted the need for Congress to enact legislation to spur job creation and help the unemployed. The House passed a big jobs bill in December but the fate of any similar action in the Senate is unclear.
"We need that kind of action and we need it now," Patrick told CNN Senior Political Correspondent Candy Crowley.

Hilarious, the stimu-less money is running out and now all those poor little bureaucrats kept on the payroll for the last two years sitting at their little desks doing nothing will have to forget about their raises, healthcare plans and matching 401K's, and 85% at 20yr pension plan contributions. I love it, the only way out of all this government created mess is for these tax funded entitlement programs completely bite the dust. Oh, do you think they'll be mad about their pension funds, about as mad as every social security recipient!
Please listen carefully! Americans we are on our own, the Government does not care about Main Street regardless of who is President, either Democrat or Republican.
Wars will go on, Wall Street is feasting on cash again, Capitol Hill will continue to be ineffectual, Political Pork subsidies will be allocated, Small Businesses will close, and Life as we \"KNEW IT\" is gone.
If you need to believe in something, start believing in yourself, community, take pride in the sustainable items you can create with your own hands, be self reliant and learn to help your neighbors, act as if Government Help is a far off cruel fairy-tail.
The Financial Depression and lose of jobs has been manufactured by the very System that is now in control of fixing the mess. Now does that make sense to let them be in control? No it doesn't...
It is completely possible to move forward with our lives and prosper once again, it was done before, and now regular folks spread out across the Nation have to do it again.
Good luck, Good Bye, and don't forget to write!

Would you libertarirans give it up. States are hurting because of the Wall street and globalization which caused a ripple effect on our state and local economies. This is the free market you folks are always insisting is good for us. If you think because of your political beliefs that you are insulated from this mess, think again. No wonder you can't get anyone elected, you still think this is the 18th century.
"These republicans that are blocking all progress by the current administration..."
I suspect your definition and mine don't match–I know Obama's definition and mine don't match. In fact, they're just about antithetical–"progress," to Obama and those who agree with him, is more or less utter disaster as far as I'm concerned.
Political gridloick is not new this year!! Especially, it has existed over the long-term of our nation, but more specifically it became extremely polarizing under the Bush-Cheney regime. Now it appears to be a way of political life - or death.
What this country needs is a complete and utter sweep of Washington so that not one single politician is re-elected. Start over. Put term limits on all politicians. One term is not unreasonable. It would give millions a chance to do something that the select few have completely failed at over the last 200 years or more. Ban lobbyists from the buildings. Refuse to think that even one politician is in Washington for any reason other than self-promotion and preservation of his lifestyle.
Stop letting them feed at the public trough. The first one that makes a disparaging remark about someone across the aisle should be banned from Congress.
Will we do it? No. Will we see things change? No. Nothing will happen productively until we the people throw out all politicians and begin a new process of governing for the people and by the people. The first thing I discount from any politician is when he tells me he is there to serve and help the electorate. That is a lie! He's there to get what he can before somebody learns what he received.
This gridlock is hurting the AMERICAN PEOPLE as a whole
It never ceases to amaze me that the left wing democrats always think someone else should pay to support their incompitence
I see the republicans getting fired up about nothing party and they will pay heavily at mid terms
If Congress wants to spend money that they do not have then they should pay for it out of their own pockets. There needs to be a debt limit as it relates to borrowing which should be well within the government'
