Washington (CNN) - Conservatives are jubilant about their prospects for this fall's midterm elections, but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney - fresh off a rousing performance at the Conservative Political Action Conference - is urging them to temper that optimism.
"If the election were held today, I would anticipate Democrats would lose office and so would the president, but a week is a lifetime in politics," Romney told USA Today in an interview after his CPAC speech last Thursday. Video of the sit-down was posted on Monday.
"By November, things could be very different," said the Republican, who is plotting a second White House run in 2012. "We conservatives can't start counting our chickens before they hatch. We got a long way to go before November. And 2012? My goodness."
"A year ago a lot of people thought President Obama was going to be a three-term president like FDR, and now he's going downhill faster than Lindsey Vonn," he joked, name-dropping the Olympic gold-medalist skier.
People, people, people! Why do you think it is iimpossible to vote for a Mormon? A man who successfully ran a business and directed an Olympics! Folks didn't seem to have a problem voting for someone whose resume was extremely light, poltically speaking!
That Lindey Vonn joke gets funnier every time he tells it.
What a tool.
I wonder if he checked out her SI pics? Would he understand what he was looking at?
What exactly does the Republican Party have there, Mitt? You use fear mongering to get votes from those who scare easily. How much do you really love this country when you're willing to destroy it just to win elections?
I'm disgusted by what the Republican Party has become. They have nothing but fear and tax cuts for the rich and corporations that shipped jobs overseas, then more of the same. They make proposals yet when our President gets on board, they vote against their own proposals. They would not let the President talk to their school aged children. Have you ever seen such a thing? They don't have our best interests at heart, nor that of our country. How much more willing are we to let them tear this country apart in order to win, because that's exactly their intent.
President Obama will be a two term president simply because he is revealing the opposition for what they are; ignorant, void of ideas, and petty. Just look at who's attached themselves to the tea party movement; Sarah Palin, Michael Steele, and the dumbest of republican politicians. Their chants of "we want to take our country back" really means that they want to take their country BACKWARDS.
Could not have been too 'rousing' since 3 out of 4 people were against Romney.
And his speech has been criticized by other conservatives as full of inaccuracies.
Republicans want all of us in soup lines then they think they will win. No ideas how to solve anything just a bunch of fools that hope things get worse for Americans. NO WAY NO REPUBLICAN VOTES ANY DAY.
As of now, Ron Paul is the ONLY potential candidate that represents real change and fiscal responsibility.
Sad to say but this is one thing that we can all agree on. Paul is the ideological successor to Reagan but his party has gotten so warped that they treat him like he has the plague.
Yes, lots IS happening these days. The economy is turning or has turned. The war in Iraq is winding down and the war against Al Quida is beginning to pay off both militarily and politically. Healthcare reform WILL happen and it will be better than either Senate or House plans as they exist today.
People who only care about seeing Obama fail should start being scared.

Romney, the mormon cult member needs to go away! America will never be ready for a man that beliieves in Multipul wifes in the next life..or that he will be God of his own worl.

The only joke is you Romney.
You actually think that given your religion (Mormon) you could actually be elected by the very part you represent (Republicans: un-yielding Christian fanatics like Palin).
Good luck. Stick to running a business.
A very sad man and woman inserting their comments here. We will one day end your bigotry and we will, indeed, run the government. It is inevitible.
Why would it be Romney/Palin in 2012? Romney needing more naked pictures of men and wants to get near Palins' daughters ex-boyfriend also?
Romney needing to come out of the close? Is he living a dual life?
Palin can choose better than Mitt, as well as every other candidate.
