Washington (CNN) - Sarah Palin's spokeswoman Meg Stapleton, a close adviser to the former Alaska governor who developed a rocky relationship with other Republicans and members of the media, has resigned, two sources close to Palin confirmed Wednesday to CNN.
Stapleton, a spokesperson for the former governor since 2006, cited the need to spend more time with her husband and young daughter. In a statement first reported by Politico, Stapleton explained that serving Palin "has been an honor" but said it is time to "refocus my priorities."
But ever since Palin was suddenly elevated to the national stage in August 2008, Palin insiders, members of Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign and other Republicans sympathetic to the former governor have grumbled privately about Stapleton's ability to handle the increasingly monumental task of advising Palin, a global political celebrity whose every word is dissected and analyzed by pundits, celebrity magazines and the blogosphere.
Members of the political press corps have also long been frustrated with Stapleton, who was the primary conduit between Palin and members of the media since the end of the 2008 presidential race, but rarely responded to phone calls or e-mails. When Stapleton did, they were often terse or combative.
She and Palin had previously spoken about resigning, but Stapleton informed SarahPAC staffers of her decision by e-mail last week.
"Earlier this week, I handed Governor Palin my resignation, effective the end of this month," the e-mail said. "While I had hoped to work together on so many more projects, time with my precious 2-year-old has been further minimized with the whirlwind commitments of all things Palin. I have done my best to scale back, but Isabella is now resorting to hiding my BlackBerry, and she shouldn't grow up begging for a mother to start acting like a mother."
There are no immediate plans to hire a replacement for Stapleton, a source close to the Palin family told CNN. The source noted that the family, which takes pride in their Alaskan identity, are comfortable speaking in their own voice.
UPDATE: Fred Malek, an influential GOP fundraiser and adviser to Palin, e-mailed to compliment Stapleton on her service.
"Any professional has to be judged by success, and by any measure, Team Palin has been an enormous success," Malek told CNN. "As Governor Palin's principle aide during this awesome rise, she has been a one woman band and deserves much credit and admiration."
Good for her, another person finally sees the light. There's no way I could ever work for "rogue" Sarah Palin. Look up the definition of rogue and see for yourself. She's probably tired of her crap!
Very few people have the stamina to run
with a winner. And Palin is a WINNER !
Who Cares?? She is a hlaf term quitter! CNN do your job! No one cares!
What it came down to was that Ms. Stapleton could not keep Palin from putting her foot in her mouth like she has done so many times in the past year and a half or so. If I were her daughter I'd be hiding her Blackberry too, just so she didn't have to listen to Caribou Barbie's grating voice on the other end.
Palin's family has no plans to hire a replacement for Ms. Stapleton because they are comfortable speaking in their own voice. The problem is, anyone except half-wits, birthers, teabaggers, and brain-addled Republicans are UNcomfortable with that voice. It's truly hard to believe that someone could really be that stupid other than possibly Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh.
Now if only we can get Sarah Palin to resign from The Palin Group.
Finally saw what a circus sideshow Palin really is and decided not to be associated with that. She saved face by saying the separation was so she could focus on other matters.
I bet Sarah is real fun to work with NOT
Make you all a bet that Palin had a falling out with this woman and in a year or so Stapleton will have her own "Tell All Book" about Palin.......
Meg Stapleton please don't quit.....if you quit then what will happen to little poor Sarah......
Now if we could just get Sarah to 'resign' also....
And Palin needs to quit!
What does having pride in their Alaskan identity have to do with speaking in their own voice? Oh well, let the good times roll.
I really think Palin needs to hire Karl Rove for her media campaign.
He was able to get Junior the Idiot elected, I'm sure he could do the same for the Wasilla Hillbilly.
I dont' blame her. It must be excruciatingly difficult and time consuming to track, correlate, and make some semblance of sense out of Sarah Palin's endless stream of lies.
Clearly, the CNN agenda here is to keep all things Palin in the forefront all the time, in hopes that it will sabotage her ratings. Despicable. And just so you know, I'm not a Palin supporter, but for crying out loud, give it a rest CNN, will you?
How much could she do with a hopeless idiot?
God speed, Meg.
Now if only Mrs. Palin would step out of public for her children's sake.
Looks like the shows about over Sarah, your use as a tool and a fool for the Neocon-artists paid well. Now zipper up that bag of money and head on back to the land of the yellow snow.
I would too. I stand to see her on TV, much less in person. Palin has also been a terrible problem for Stapleton to manage. She resigned as Governor with telling her. She released her book of lies without her review. Palin booked dates she never told her about. Palin is out of control and I am sure Meg is sick to death of this prima donna of stupidity.
There are no immediate plans to replace Meg because they need to find someone who can keep the Palins secrets hidden from the public. You just can't hire anyone.
Maybe Sarah will hire Bristol from BSMP LLC if Sarah has confidence with Bristol's PR firm?
Now, if only Sarah would consider stepping down, one can have their dreams, right?
He got smart....hope the rest of her staff will wake up and leave this unfit pig for a mom...pittbull my foot....she cost us the election and now she is making money off her country...go away already palin you F up this party...
If I were charged with trying to make Palin look good, I think I would be reduced to being "terse and combative" as well.
when the heat in the kitchen gets too hot, the usual line of exit is, "I want to spend more time with the family."
maybe ms. stapleton has wised up about sarah. no matter how you advise her, sarah palin is a loose cannon ball.
