Top Palin aide resigns

A top Palin aide stepped down Wednesday.
A top Palin aide stepped down Wednesday.

Washington (CNN) - Sarah Palin's spokeswoman Meg Stapleton, a close adviser to the former Alaska governor who developed a rocky relationship with other Republicans and members of the media, has resigned, two sources close to Palin confirmed Wednesday to CNN.

Stapleton, a spokesperson for the former governor since 2006, cited the need to spend more time with her husband and young daughter. In a statement first reported by Politico, Stapleton explained that serving Palin "has been an honor" but said it is time to "refocus my priorities."

But ever since Palin was suddenly elevated to the national stage in August 2008, Palin insiders, members of Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign and other Republicans sympathetic to the former governor have grumbled privately about Stapleton's ability to handle the increasingly monumental task of advising Palin, a global political celebrity whose every word is dissected and analyzed by pundits, celebrity magazines and the blogosphere.

Members of the political press corps have also long been frustrated with Stapleton, who was the primary conduit between Palin and members of the media since the end of the 2008 presidential race, but rarely responded to phone calls or e-mails. When Stapleton did, they were often terse or combative.

She and Palin had previously spoken about resigning, but Stapleton informed SarahPAC staffers of her decision by e-mail last week.

"Earlier this week, I handed Governor Palin my resignation, effective the end of this month," the e-mail said. "While I had hoped to work together on so many more projects, time with my precious 2-year-old has been further minimized with the whirlwind commitments of all things Palin. I have done my best to scale back, but Isabella is now resorting to hiding my BlackBerry, and she shouldn't grow up begging for a mother to start acting like a mother."

There are no immediate plans to hire a replacement for Stapleton, a source close to the Palin family told CNN. The source noted that the family, which takes pride in their Alaskan identity, are comfortable speaking in their own voice.

UPDATE: Fred Malek, an influential GOP fundraiser and adviser to Palin, e-mailed to compliment Stapleton on her service.

"Any professional has to be judged by success, and by any measure, Team Palin has been an enormous success," Malek told CNN. "As Governor Palin's principle aide during this awesome rise, she has been a one woman  band and deserves much credit and admiration."

When is Sarah going to follow and spend more time with her family? But then she wouldn't be getting the attention she gets now and I'd be willing to bet she couldn't stand being a mother 24/7 and not being in the news everyday.

Why was it she resigned being Alaska's governor? To write a book and make money making personal appearances? That's not what she said but it appears she wasn't quite honest when she resigned. Surprised?

Sarah Palin just needs to get out of the line light. I would never vote for someone who drops out of there office, just because that person thinks she can run the county. One think she needs to understand is that the county was in a mess when obama took office, and if she thinks she could have done a better job, I do not think so. President Obama is doing a great job,

"Isabella is now resorting to hiding my BlackBerry, and she shouldn't grow up begging for a mother to start acting like a mother." Seems like Sarah should also take that advice and spend more time with her kids so they don't "grow up begging for a mother to start acting like a mother." I'm all for working moms – I did, too, but what kind of life do kids have when their parent is always on the road, in the lime-light, and in it for herself?

Uh Mr. Malek, if you measure success how much of a jacka.... a person can make of themselves, then I guess Palin has been very successful. Sounds to me that Sarah is blaming others again for her ignorance and ineptness. Resigned my foot, Meg, you got fired due to not being able to make Sarah appear to have any common sense. I don't care how hard you try, you cannot make a moron into a genius, no matter how hard you try. And no I am no Liberal Leftist, I hate them as much as I hate you so called conservatives.

"Palin, a global political celebrity whose every word is dissected and analyzed"

Peter Hamby, if you really believe this you are a boot-licking stooge.

Palin is a global embarrassment, a proven lair (pathological liar at that), an ignorant scatterbrain that has to write on her hand because there ain't enough brain cells in her cranium to hold ten words worth of memory.

What an utter insult to America this article is.

This evil woman deliberately and willfully lied, accused, spread false information to glorify her buddy Sarah at the expense of honorable people and their reputations. She should be hauled before the courts for defamation and slander. Let her hang.

far more a celebrity than a politician...look at her hair streaks...vanity is vanity...and if it is apparent in those who hope to be leaders than what you can expect....is for those certain people to take superficial or vain approaches to winning the consent of the people...these days a all a leader need do is support a less conventional social standard....gay, black, hispanic....and then what happens?.....the voters look at the candidate with their hands open thinking..."what can this person do for me"...not what can i do for this country.....god bless america....because we definately need it

Sarah Palin is now a Fox News pundit. She is not relevant anymore. CPAC wants her to be their candidate at 7%, behind Ron Paul and Mitt Romney.

CNN...Please stop promoting this has-been. I'm tired of seeing that lying, incompetent face on this wedpage.

    Please Stop promoting this woman.
