Crist: Independent run 'not going to happen'

(CNN) - Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is dismissing a rumor that he will abandon the Republican Senate primary and run as an Independent.

A conservative online columnist for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel floated the claim on Thursday, setting off a flurry of Internet speculation that Crist might bolt from his party to avoid losing to Marco Rubio in the primary. But Crist said Thursday it's not true.

"It's not going to happen," Crist said at an event in Broward County, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Crist also kept up his offensive against Rubio, who is back-pedaling this week after revelations that he made personal charges on his Republican Party of Florida credit card. The governor brushed off Rubio's claim that Crist allies leaked the credit card information to newspapers.

"He is the one who made these charges, not me, not any of my friends," Crist said, according to the Times. "I mean, you know, when you do something like that you ought to just take personal responsibility."

"The people will decide this issue," he said. "I think it's pretty clear that they don't like that kind of double dipping. It's just like taxpayers' money. You ought to treat those funds in a vey sacred way."

He added: "Like I said yesterday, welcome to the NFL. If you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen."

Charlie, these people's idol is Sarah Palin. Personal responsibility is an alien concept to them.

  2. If I was crazy, I'd be a conservative too

Rubio is a typical tea bagger who has violated ethics laws, and he will be rejected by Florida republicans. (Rubio will be embraced by tea baggers who put criminal activity above public service)

  3. Former Republican, now an Independent

I applaud Crist if he is the one who exposed this piece of information. It doesn't take long to figure out what kind of person Rubio is when he is hanging out with double talking crooks like Jim DeMint, Eric Cantor, Mark Sanford, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, Bob Corker, etc.

As long as Gov Crist doesn't allow himself to be brought down to the level of our republicans doing all the talking but no action, then he will win by a wide margin. The likes of Rubio will never beat Crist.

Why did CNN choose this picture? CNN is either trying to appease the hard right or really likes creating controversy. They hate losing to FOX and their political team is mediocre compared to MSNBC. CNN, you suck!

Christ, run as an Independent. The Republican party is a bunch of do nothing losers. There really needs to be a 3rd party anyway.

Crist is a snide little Populist RINO.

He isn't getting my vote again for anything.

Cristy supported the disastrous waste of hundreds of billions of dollars of TAXPAYER money.

Stimulus this Charlie – no how, no way.

Gov. Crist is a decent guy. He is the kind of Republican, I was once..... B.B. (Before Bush)! Sadly, he is being thrown under the bus because he dared to shake President Obama's hand, hug him and accept Stimulus money to help Florida!

PS. CNN can't you find a better photo of Gov. Crist?

As an Indepent voter & Florida Resident I support Charlie Crist. I believe he will put the will of all people above the GOP agenda. Rubio lacks state-wide name recognition and has never won a state-wide election. The tea-baggers believe their support for Rubio will propel him to the Senate...it won't. What it will do is split the party.

Is this really the only picture of Charlie Christ you guys have on file? I don't have any opinion on the Governor, but he looks like he's about to explode...or maybe implode (I'm really not sure).

The republican party in Florida is just as corrupt and the national party.

Here's a quote from the St. Petersburg Times from Rubio when he was questioned about using the party credit card pay for airline flights for his wife:

"My wife was the first lady of the Florida House of Representatives, and it is absolutely appropriate for her to accompany me to official events and party functions."

First lady of the House of Representatives? I didn't know there was such a thing. Is there also a first lady of the Florida Senate, or the Florida Judiciary, or how about the Animal Control department? Mario if you want your wife with you when you go on a business trip, do what the rest of us have to: pay for her ticket yourself!

Charlie Crist and Scott Brown both need to be in the Senate. They think about the people first and the party last. We need more politicians like them in Washington regardless of what party they represent. I am Democrat, but I like these guys.

Why does CNN always show this deer in the headlights shot of Crist? They have a nice looking one for Rubio. They seem to be biased based on thier choice of imagery. What gives CNN?

Too bad Charlie is not considering going independent. Unless he knows something about the Florida Republican party (and their closed primary), or some juicier secrets about Marco, it looks like his best shot to win.

    Crist is a good man.

Rubio is a hypocritical little fellow with a bizarre sense of right and wrong.

I've got no problem with the picture CNN used for Gov. Crist. He's confused about a lot of things. He should just become a Democrat where he'll be embraced. After all, The Democrats are the new Big Tent party. In the meantime if Rubio wins the nomination Floridians are in for a decisive battle in November.

Rubio just gave away the election when it was revealed that he Pro Amnesty for the illegals in this counrty. If that is true He will lose come November. Christ will say he has learned and is the real conservative and he is AGAINST AMNESTY. He will win in Nov.

Well if the Repubs succeed in locking him as they are trying to do, then I think he should run as an Independent. The Repubs would most certainly lose then.

Rubio is too much for Crist. Crist was the early favorite, but Rubio has skyrocketed out of nowhere.
