Greer denies involvement in Rubio story

Marco Rubio has accused Jim Greer of leaking documents to the Crist campaign.
Marco Rubio has accused Jim Greer of leaking documents to the Crist campaign.

(CNN) - Former Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer is denying allegations he was involved with leaking Senate candidate Marco Rubio's credit card statements to the media.

The vigorous denial comes a day after Rubio charged Greer likely played a key role in supplying statements to Florida Gov. Charlie Crist's campaign showing Rubio charged personal expenses on a party credit card while he was Florida's House speaker.

Greer, the longtime ally of Crist, resigned his post as head of the state Party in January amid criticisms over his management of party money and his involvement in contested primaries. Several of Rubio's backers had called for Greer's resignation for months.

"While some continue to disrupt and try to destroy the Republican Party, I wish to be clear, I did not release or leak Marco Rubio's Amex statements to the media," Greer said in a statement to the St. Petersburg Times. "It is my hope that those individuals who seem committed to attacking fellow Republicans and our Party will stop before we lose it all. '

The credit card records, obtained by the St. Petersburg Times/Miami Herald, indicate Rubio made several personal purchases with the state party's corporate credit card when he was Florida's House speaker between the years of 2005 to 2008. Rubio immediately defended his actions and charged Greer and the Crist campaign were behind the media report.

A spokesman for Crist did not address Rubio's allegation that their campaign was behind the leaked documents, but said the credit card bills show "a clear pattern is emerging in Speaker Rubio's unfortunate behavior."

The expenses in question included repairs to his family car, items at an Apple Store, grocery bills, and purchases from a wine store close to Rubio's home. In his letter to the state GOP chairman Wednesday, Rubio contends GOP officials fully permitted him to put personal expenses on the card so long as he reimbursed the party for them.

Contending that he reimbursed the party for all his personal expenses, Rubio said he paid the party more than $16,000 for expenditures not related to party business. Rubio also said he used the card for personal expenses under knowledge and permission from the party, though a party spokeswoman said credit cards are generally expected to be used only for business purposes.

Crist is running for the senate this year rather than for a second term as governor. Rubio trailed Crist by double digits last year but recent surveys suggest that Rubio now has a slight lead in the battle for their party's senate nomination.

Rubio is just desperate to keep voters from knowing what a Republican slimeball he is. Tea baggers care nothing about character, integrity or morality of its candidates. They just want them to say what they want to hear....not mental giants.

Rubio is a sham and will do nothing for the People of Florida. Charlie Crist is an intelligent, experienced, and successful servant of the People of Florida. Even though I am no fan of Republicans, he is a good man and would be an effective Senator.

TOO LATE Greer!!!!!!! Your Party has collectively lost the good sense and common decency that the good Lord gave you, as further evidenced by the Party-First-Screw-America rhetoric that you spewed yet again yesterday on national television. Rewind the tape!

If Rubio is whining about this, how will he be tough enough to get results in the US Senate for Florida? I guess the truth hurts.

Who cares who leaked the info. Did Rubio, or did he not, make personal purchases (girl friend? – boy friend?) with the Republincan Party Credit Card? That is all that matters. I think we haev found another Shooting Star Rightwingnut Republican – high into the sky they rise, the flame goes out, and down they come. Boom! He's done. Next!

Regardless of who is at fault for the leak, if you don't do wrong in the dark, nothing can come to light. Can't cry foul when you were the first to do wrong

Charlie Crist is a typical politician. He avoids talking about the issues and decides that a negative campaigning will work. Think again Charlie, that doesn't work anymore bud.

Is there no end to the skeletons in the clooset of this party? This is just like scratching the scabs off of sores. The inevitible outcome is that the sore will bleed. How can we trust those who are elected when the skeletons keep jumping out? Remember what you were taught about what Shakespeare said about the lawyers?

It is difficult to imagine Rubio's mindset. Crying about getting caught spending campaign money on personal expenses is a valid point no matter who leaked the information.

What else has he done and how indignant will he be when that information is leaked?

If he's a crook, I think the public needs to know. Well, it looks like he is a crook and now the voters can decide, unless the Supreme Court decides it will just pick a candidate. It is Florida, after all.
