(CNN) – A family court judge in Charleston, South Carolina, has granted Jenny Sanford's request for a divorce from her husband, Gov. Mark Sanford.
She filed for divorce last December, saying reconciliation efforts with her husband were unsuccessful after he carried on a year-long affair with an Argentine woman he called his "soulmate."
Jenny Sanford, who has been separated from her husband since last summer, appeared in the courtroom. The governor was not in attendance.
The judge said the divorce will become official at some point in March when the paperwork can be entered into court records.
Read Mark Sanford's statement after the jump:
Columbia, S.C. – February 26, 2010 – The governor simply stands by what he said in December, when he said:"While it is not the course I would have hoped for, or would choose, I want to take full responsibility for the moral failure that led us to this tragic point. Jenny is a great person, and has been a remarkable wife, mother and First Lady. She has been more than gracious these last six months and gone above and beyond in her patience and commitment to put the needs of others in front of her own. While our family structure may change, I know that we will both work earnestly to be the best mom and dad we can be to four of the finest boys on earth.
"I will join with her in asking the press to respect our shared desire for privacy as we quietly move forward. We respectively ask for your prayers."
He reiterates that last point, in asking for prayers for he, Jenny and the boys – and again respectfully asks for privacy on these matters relating to the family.

Bless her heart. I wish the best.
I wonder if Mark was hiking the Appalachian Trail or visiting his soul mate. As the song goes, Don't cry for me alimony, it was worth it for Mark.
Gov. Mark Sanford is a DIRT BAG – Plain and Simple !! He did not show up to the courtroom because he was probably too busy beating himself off...LOL....{:o)
"The governor was not in attendance."
Yeah, but he had time to make it to the CPAC gig last week and was welcomed like a hero.
So much for family values.
It's good that Jenny dumped the "family values" Republican loser. She and her children are much better off without him.
Funny thing about these southern, evangelical christian politicians; they cannot live up to the values they claim to have.
Good for you Jenny. Leave the bum.
She kind of looks like Kristin Wiig.
Good for her! Time to move-on.
She can always return to Tara.It was her cash that bought her moron husband the job in the first place.
Any bets on how long it'll be before he takes a trip to Argentina...or when the g/friend comes here???
Good for her.
He is nuts!!! Is this what are country has come to? looney tunes are Governors?
Why is this a news? Can US reporters stop dealing with personal lives of celebrities or political leaders, even at the cost of reducing their ratings?
She is really pretty. Good for her.
Why does this matter? Doesn't this belong in the showbiz section? Oh yeah, to CNN politics is the show biz section!
Wither the boyz....??? Guess they're moving back to her old home. Gov couldn't be bothered to show up at his own divorce hearing. So much for respecting law and domestic issues and family.
CONGRADULATIONS!!!
That sorry coward didn't even have enough respect to show up for court. I guess he thought he would have to talk about his romanic get away.
I thought the law in SC was that you had to be legally separted for a minimum of 1yr to be able to get a divorce. I live in SC and I know that this is less than a year. What is going on here? Is this the old addage that if you have money the rules don't apply?
good for her her ex should get nuterd and get the rest of the republicans like Bonner and McConnel, Palin to do the same . as to not breed there racist ideals forward . the party of NO andthe purist party tea baggers ./ bottom of the pond
How come scumbag Sanford is still in office? I thought red state South Carolina was so hot on morals and family values??? What a joke GOP is.
Boy, did she get some bad advice.......Hope she's into romance novels.
Great! Now that Jenny got rid of Sanford, South Carolina should do the same. Give the Gov a one way ticket to Argentina and his "soulmate."
I'm glad she can finally move on with her life.
I just don't understand how she could have even considered going back to that man after his speech, professing his love for another woman to the entire country. It showed his total disregard for his family and his marriage.
I would have bought him a one way ticket to Argentina. But he would have been speaking with a much higher pitched voice.
More religious hypocracy!!! Was he praying when he lied, cheated and discraced the state of South Carolina? Typical Republican....campaigns on Christian family values!!
Mark Sanford is a coward slime-ball.
Another National Enquirer story on the Political Ticker. CNN has run more stories on Mark and Jenny Sanfords divorce than it has on Charlie Rangel's theft and hypocrisy and Nancy Pelosi's refusal to take any actions against him. That just doesn't make sense in the real world.
